A transfer matrix method is developed for optical calculations of non-interacting graphene layers. Within the framework of this method, optical properties such as reflection, transmission and absorption for single-, double- and multi-layer graphene are studied. We also apply the method to structures consisting of periodically arranged graphene layers, revealing well-defined photonic band structures and even photonic bandgaps. Finally, we discuss graphene plasmons and introduce a simple way to tune the plasmon dispersion.

It is important to study the van der Waals interface in emerging vertical heterostructures based on layered two-dimensional (2D) materials. Being atomically thin, 2D materials are susceptible to significant strains as well as charge transfer doping a cross the interfaces. Here we use Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to study the interface between monolayer graphene/MoS2 heterostructures prepared by mechanical exfoliation and layer-by-layer transfer. By using correlation analysis between the Raman modes of graphene and MoS2 we show that both layers are subjected to compressive strain and charge transfer doping following mechanical exfoliation and thermal annealing. Furthermore, we show that both strain and carrier concentration can be modulated in the heterostructures with additional thermal annealing. Our study highlights the importance of considering both mechanical and electronic coupling when characterizing the interface in van der Waals heterostructures, and demonstrates a method to tune their electromechanical properties.
We investigate the resonance energy transfer (RET) rate between two quantum emitters near a suspended graphene sheet in vacuum under the influence of an external magnetic field. We perform the analysis for low and room temperatures and show that, due to the extraordinary magneto-optical response of graphene, it allows for an active control and tunability of the RET even in the case of room temperature. We also demonstrate that the RET rate is extremely sensitive to small variations of the applied magnetic field, and can be tuned up to a striking six orders of magnitude for quite realistic values of magnetic field. Moreover, we evidence the fundamental role played by the magnetoplasmon polaritons supported by the graphene monolayer as the dominant channel for the RET within a certain distance range. Our results suggest that magneto-optical media may take the manipulation of energy transfer between quantum emitters to a whole new level, and broaden even more its great spectrum of applications.
We study the interaction of electromagnetic (EM) radiation with single-layer graphene and a stack of parallel graphene sheets at arbitrary angles of incidence. It is found that the behavior is qualitatively different for transverse magnetic (or p-pol arized) and transverse electric (or s-polarized) waves. In particular, the absorbance of single-layer graphene attains minimum (maximum) for p (s) polarization, at the angle of total internal reflection when the light comes from a medium with a higher dielectric constant. In the case of equal dielectric constants of the media above and beneath graphene, for grazing incidence graphene is almost 100% transparent to p-polarized waves and acts as a tunable mirror for the s-polarization. These effects are enhanced for the stack of graphene sheets, so the system can work as a broad band polarizer. It is shown further that a periodic stack of graphene layers has the properties of an one-dimensional photonic crystal, with gaps (or stop--bands) at certain frequencies. When an incident EM wave is reflected from this photonic crystal, the tunability of the graphene conductivity renders the possibility of controlling the gaps, and the structure can operate as a tunable spectral--selective mirror.
We study the formation of wrinkles in graphene upon wet transfer onto a target substrate, whereby draining of water appears to play an important role. We are able to control the orientation of the wrinkles by tuning the surface morphology. Wrinkles a re absent in flakes transferred to strongly hydrophobic substrates, a further indication of the role of the interaction of water with the substrate in wrinkle formation. The electrical and structural integrity of the graphene is not affected by the wrinkles, as inferred from Raman measurements and electrical conductivity measurements.

Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) is strongly related with many applications such as near-field imaging, thermos-photovoltaics and thermal circuit devices. The active control of NFRHT is of great interest since it provides a degree of tunabi lity by external means. In this work, a magnetically tunable multi-band NFRHT is revealed in a system of two suspended graphene sheets at room temperature. It is found that the single-band spectra for B=0 split into multi-band spectra under an external magnetic field. Dual-band spectra can be realized for a modest magnetic field (e.g., B=4 T). One band is determined by intra-band transitions in the classical regime, which undergoes a blue shift as the chemical potential increases. Meanwhile, the other band is contributed by inter-Landau-level transitions in the quantum regime, which is robust against the change of chemical potentials. For a strong magnetic field (e.g., B=15 T), there is an additional band with the resonant peak appearing at near-zero frequency (microwave regime), stemming from the magneto-plasmon zero modes. The great enhancement of NFRHT at such low frequency has not been found in any previous systems yet. This work may pave a way for multi-band thermal information transfer based on atomically thin graphene sheets.
