A quasar search in the region of the active galaxy NGC 1097 yielded 31 quasars in 1984. After completion of the 2dF survey in 2004 the number of catalogued quasars just within 1 degree of the galaxy increased to 142. About 38 $pm$ 10 of these are in excess of average background values. The evidence in 1984 is confirmed here by an increasing density of quasars as one approaches NGC 1097. Quasars within 1 degree differ from the background by being significantly brighter. There also appear two elliptical rings or arcs of quasars at r $sim$ 20and 40.

With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasars environment in absorption. We used a sample of 17 Lyman limit systems with column density N_HI > 10^19 cm^-2 selected from 149 projected quasar pair sightlines, to investigate the clustering pattern of optically thick absorbers around luminous quasars at z ~ 2.5. Specifically, we measured the quasar-absorber correlation function in the transverse direction, and found a comoving correlation length of r_0=9.2_{+1.5}_{-1.7} Mpc/h (comoving) assuming a power law correlation function, with gamma=1.6. Applying this transverse clustering strength to the line-of-sight, would predict that ~ 15-50% of all quasars should show a N_HI > 10^19 cm^-2 absorber within a velocity window of v < 3000 km/s. This overpredicts the number of absorbers along the line-of-sight by a large factor, providing compelling evidence that the clustering pattern of optically thick absorbers around quasars is highly anisotropic. The most plausible explanationfor the anisotropy is that the transverse direction is less likely to be illuminated by ionizing photons than the line-of-sight, and that absorbers along the line-of-sight are being photoevaporated. A simple model for the photoevaporation of absorbers subject to the ionizing flux of a quasar is presented, and it is shown that absorbers with volume densities n_H < 0.1 cm^-3 will be photoevaporated if they lie within ~ 1 Mpc (proper) of a luminous quasar. Using this simple model, we illustrate how comparisons of the transverse and line-of-sight clustering around quasars can ultimately be used to constrain the distribution of gas in optically thick absorption line systems.
We have carried out deep and wide field imaging observations with narrow bands targeting 11 quasar fields to systematically study the possible photoevaporation effect of quasar radiation on surrounding low mass galaxies at $zsim2-3$. We focused on Ly man alpha emitters (LAEs) at the same redshifts as the quasars that lie within the quasar proximity zones, where the ultra-violet radiation from the quasars is higher than the average background at that epoch. We found that LAEs with high rest-frame equivalent width of Ly$alpha$ emission ($EW_0$) of $gtrsim 150$AA$~$ with low stellar mass ($lesssim 10^8 M_{odot}$), are predominantly scarce in the quasar proximity zones, suggesting that quasar photoevaporation effects may be taking place. The halo mass of LAEs with $EW_0>150$AA$~$ is estimated to be $3.6^{+12.7}_{-2.3}times10^9 M_{odot}$ either from the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting or the main sequence. Based on a hydrodynamical simulation, the predicted delay in star formation under a local UV background intensity with $J ( u_L)gtrsim10^{-21}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ for galaxies having less than this halo mass is about $>20$ Myr, which is longer than the expected age of LAEs with $EW_0>150$AA. On the other hand, the photoevaporation seems to be less effective around very luminous quasars, which is consistent with the idea that these quasars are still in an early stage of quasar activity.
We present an ALMA high-resolution observation of the 840 um continuum and [CII] line emission in the WISE-SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) QSO J1015+0020 at z~4.4. Our analysis reveals an exceptional overdensity of [CII]-emitting companions with a very small (<150 km/s) velocity shift with respect to the QSO redshift. We report the discovery of the closest companion observed so far in submillimetre observations of high-z QSOs. It is only 2.2 kpc distant and merging with J1015+0020, while two other [CII] emitters are found at 8 and 17 kpc. Two strong continuum emitters are also detected at <3.5 arcsec. They are likely associated to the same overdense structure of J1015+0020, as they exceed by a factor of 100 the number of expected sources, considering the Log(N)-Log(S) at 850 um. The host galaxy of J1015+0020 shows a SFR of about 100 Msun/yr while the total SFR of the QSO and its companion galaxies is a factor of 10 higher, indicating that substantial stellar mass assembly at early epochs may have taken place in the QSO satellites. For J1015+0020 we compute a SMBH mass MBH~6E9 Msun and a dynamical mass Mdyn~4E10 Msun . This translates into an extreme ratio Mdyn/MBH~7. The total stellar mass of the QSO host galaxy plus the [CII] emitters already exceeds 1E11 Msun at z~4.4. These sources will likely merge and develop into a giant galaxy of 1.3E12 Msun. Under the assumption of constant mass or Eddington accretion rate equal to the observed values, we find that the growth timescale of the host galaxy is comparable or even shorter than that inferred for the SMBH.

We present new observations in X-ray and optical/ultraviolet of the nucleus of NGC1097, known for the abrupt appearance of broad, double-peaked Balmer lines in its spectrum in 1991. These new observations are used to construct the spectral energy dis tribution (SED) of the central engine. From the SED we infer that this AGN is radio-loud and has a bolometric luminosity L_Bol ~ 10^42 erg/s, implying a low Eddington ratio of L_Bol/L_Edd ~ 10^{-4}. These results suggest that the central ionizing source is an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in the form of an ellevated structure which photoionizes an outer thin disk. We fit a simplified ADAF model to the SED and obtain limits on the values of the mass accretion rate Mdot and accretion efficiency eta, namely Mdot/Mdot_Edd >= 10^{-3} and eta <= 10^{-2}. We identify an energy budget problem: if the central photoionizing source is isotropic, the covering factor of the line-emitting portion of the thin accretion disk is ~ 6, i. e. the central source accounts for only 20% of the energy emitted in the double-peaked Balmer lines.
With the Infrared Camera on board AKARI, we carried out near-infrared (2.5-5.0 micron) spectroscopy of the central kiloparsec region of the barred spiral galaxy, NGC1097, categorized as Seyfert 1 with a circumnuclear starburst ring. Our observations mapped the area of ~50*10 with the resolution of ~5, covering about a half of the ring and the galactic center. As a result, we spatially resolve the starburst ring in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 3.3 micron, the aliphatic hydrocarbon 3.4-3.6 micron features, and the hydrogen Br alpha 4.05 micron emission. They exhibit spatial distributions significantly different from each other, indicating that the environments vary considerably around the ring. In particular, the aliphatic features are enhanced near the bar connecting the ring with the nucleus, where the structure of hydrocarbon grains seems to be relatively disordered. Near the center, the continuum emission and the CO/SiO absorption features are strong, which indicates that the environments inside the ring are dominated by old stellar populations. The near-infrared spectra do not show any evidence for the presence of nuclear activity.
