We report on a novel material, namely two-dimensional (2D) V$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Se$_2$ alloy, exhibiting simultaneously ferromagnetic order and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. While ferromagnetism is absent in 1T-VSe$_2$ due to the competition with the charge density wave phase, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the substitution of vanadium by platinum in VSe$_2$ (10-50 %) to form an homogeneous 2D alloy restores ferromagnetic order with Curie temperatures of 6 K for 5 monolayers and 25 K for one monolayer of V$_{0.65}$Pt$_{0.35}$Se$_2$. Moreover, the presence of platinum atoms gives rise to Rashba spin-orbit coupling in (V,Pt)Se$_2$ providing an original platform to study the interplay between ferromagnetism and spin-orbit coupling in the 2D limit.

Assembling transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) at the two-dimensional (2D) limit is a promising approach for tailoring emerging states of matter such as superconductivity or charge density waves (CDWs). Single-layer (SL) VSe$_2$ stands out in th is regard because it exhibits a strongly enhanced CDW transition with a higher transition temperature compared to the bulk in addition to an insulating phase with an anisotropic gap at the Fermi level, causing a suppression of anticipated 2D ferromagnetism in the material. Here, we investigate the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom that underpin these electronic phases in SL VSe$_2$ using ultrafast pump-probe photoemission spectroscopy. In the insulating state, we observe a light-induced closure of the energy gap on a timescale of 480 fs, which we disentangle from the ensuing hot carrier dynamics. Our work thereby reveals that the phase transition in SL VSe$_2$ is driven by electron-lattice coupling and demonstrates the potential for controlling electronic phases in 2D materials with light.
Based on the dimension of degeneracy, topological electronic systems can roughly be divided into three parts: nodal point, line and surface materials corresponding to zero-, one- and two-dimensional degeneracy, respectively. In parallel to electronic systems, the concept of topology was extended to phonons, promoting the birth of topological phonons. Till date, few nodal point, line and surface phonons candidates have been predicted in solid-state materials. In this study, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculation, for the first time, we prove that zero-, one- and two-dimensional degeneracy co-exist in the phonon dispersion of one single realistic solid-state material SnO$_2$ with textit{P}4$_2$/textit{mnm} structure. In contrast to the previously reported electronic systems, the topological phonons observed in SnO$_2$ are not restricted by the Pauli exclusion principle, and they experience negligible spin-orbit coupling effect. Hence, SnO$_2$ with multiple dimensions of degeneracy phonons is a good platform for studying the entanglement among nodal point, line and surface phonons. Moreover, obvious phonon surface states are visible, which is beneficial for experimental detection.

Surface magnetism and its correlation with the electronic structure are critical to understand the gapless topological surface state in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, using static and time resolved angle-resolved p hotoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find a significant ARPES intensity change together with a gap opening on a Rashba-like conduction band. Comparison with a model simulation strongly indicates that the surface magnetism on cleaved MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the same as its bulk state. The coexistence of surface ferromagnetism and a gapless TSS uncovers the novel complexity of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ that may be responsible for the low quantum anomalous Hall temperature of exfoliated MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.
How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single crystal and monolayer VSe$_{2} $, both experimentally and emph{ab initio}. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) and emph{ab initio} calculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe$_{2.0}$ causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of sates at the Fermi level, prompting the system towards a non-magnetic state but on the verge of a ferromagnetic instability. In the monolayer limit, the structural rearrangement induces a Peierls distortion with the opening of an energy gap at the Fermi level and the absence of magnetic order. Control experiments on defect-induced VSe$_{2-delta}$ single crystals show a breakdown of magnetism, discarding vacancies as a possible origin of magnetic order in VSe$_{2}$.
We demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength for electrons near the conduction band edge in few-layer $gamma$-InSe films can be tuned over a wide range. This tunability is the result of a competition between film-thickness-dependent intrins ic and electric-field-induced SOC, potentially, allowing for electrically switchable spintronic devices. Using a hybrid $mathbf{kcdot p}$ tight-binding model, fully parameterized with the help of density functional theory computations, we quantify SOC strength for various geometries of InSe-based field-effect transistors. The theoretically computed SOC strengths are compared with the results of weak antilocalization measurements on dual-gated multilayer InSe films, interpreted in terms of Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation due to SOC, showing a good agreement between theory and experiment.
