In the study of dispersion forces, nonretarded, retarded and thermal asymptotes with their distinct scaling laws are regarded as cornerstone results governing interactions at different separations. Here, we show that when particles interact in a medium, the influence of retardation is qualitatively different, making it necessary to consider the non-monotonous potential in full. We discuss different regimes for several cases and find an anomalous behaviour of the retarded asymptote. It can change sign, and lead to a trapping potential.

Forster resonant energy transfer (FRET) with upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) as donors and quantum dots (QDs) as acceptors has been regarded as a promising tool for biosensing applications. In this work, we use time-resolved fluorescence spectrosc opy to analyze the UCNP-to-QD FRET and we focus on the most relevant parameter of the FRET phenomenon, UCNP-QD distance. This distance is controlled by a nanometric silica shell around the UCNP surface. We theoretically reproduce the experimental results applying FRET theory to the distribution of emitting erbium ions in the UCNP. This simple model allows us to estimate the contribution of every erbium ion to the final FRET response and to explore different strategies to improve FRET efficiency.
We present a systematic microscopic derivation of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation for band structures with the finite Berry curvature based on Keldysh technique of nonequilibrium systems. In the analysis, an ac electrical driving field is kept u p to quadratic order, and both cases of small and large frequencies corresponding to intra- and interband transitions are considered. In particular, this formulation is suitable for the study of nonlinear Hall effect and photogalvanic phenomena. The role of impurity scattering is carefully addressed. Specifically, in addition to previously studied side-jump and skew-scattering processes, quantum interference diffractive contributions are now explicitly incorporated within the developed framework. This theory is applied to multifold fermions in topological semimetals, for which the generic formula for the skew scattering rate from the Pancharatnam phase is obtained along with the corresponding anomalous Hall conductivity.
In Hermitian topological systems, the bulk-boundary correspondence strictly constraints boundary transport to values determined by the topological properties of the bulk. We demonstrate that this constraint can be lifted in non-Hermitian Floquet insu lators. Provided that the insulator supports an anomalous topological phase, non-Hermiticity allows us to modify the boundary states independently of the bulk, without sacrificing their topological nature. We explore the ensuing possibilities for a Floquet topological insulator with non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry, where the helical transport via counterpropagating boundary states can be tailored in ways that overcome the constraints imposed by Hermiticity. Non-Hermitian boundary state engineering specifically enables the enhancement of boundary transport relative to bulk motion, helical transport with a preferred direction, and chiral transport in the same direction on opposite boundaries. We explain the experimental relevance of our findings for the example of photonic waveguide lattices.

Usually, the liner waveguides with single quantum emitters are utilized as routers to construct the quantum network in quantum information processings. Here, we investigate the influence of the nonlinear dispersion on quantum routing of single surfac e plasmons, between two metal nanowires with a pair of quantum dots. By using a full quantum theory in real space, we obtain the routing probabilities of a single surface plasmon into the four outports of two plasmonic waveguides scattered by a pair of quantum dots. It is shown that, by properly designing the inter-dot distance and the dot-plasmon couplings, the routing capability of the surface plasmons between the plasmonic waveguide channels can be significantly higher than the relevant network formed by the single-emitter waveguides with the linear dispersions. Interestingly, the present quadratic dispersions in the waveguides deliver the manifest Fano-like resonances of the surface-plasmon transport. Therefore, the proposed double-dot configuration could be utilized as a robust quantum router for controlling the surface-plasmon routing in the plasmonic waveguides and a plasmonic Fano-like resonance controller.
We performed angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the Bi(111) surface to demonstrate that this surface support edge states of non-trivial topology. Along the $bar{Gamma}bar{M}$-direction of the surface Brillouin zone, a surface-state band dis perses from the projected bulk valence bands at $bar{Gamma}$ to the conduction bands at $bar{M}$ continuously, indicating the non-trivial topological order of three-dimensional Bi bands. We ascribe this finding to the absence of band inversion at the $L$ point of the bulk Bi Brillouin zone. According to our analysis, a modification of tight-binding parameters can account for the non-trivial band structure of Bi without any other significant change on other physical properties.
