Two magnetic configurations of Multi-cusp Plasma Device (MPD) have been explored to obtain high quiescence level, large uniform plasma region with nearly flat mean density and temperature profiles. In particular, properties of plasma in a six-pole six magnet (SPSM) and twelve pole six magnets (TPSM) cusp configurations are rigorously compared and reported here. It is found that more uniform plasma with nearly flat profiles is found in TPSM along with increased quiescence level. Findings are verified across various magnetic field strengths for both configurations.

This paper demonstrates a detailed characterization of argon plasma in a variable multi-pole line cusp magnetic field (VMMF). The VMMF has been produced by placing six electromagnets (with embedded profiled vacoflux-50 core) over a large cylindrical volume (1 m axial length and 40 cm diameter). The magnetic field have been measured by hall probe method and compared with simulated magnetic field by performing simulation using FEMM tools. Results from magnetic field simulation indicate that the rate of change of pole magnetic field (maximum magnetic field) with respect to magnet current for vacoflux-50 core is high (7.53 G/A) as compared to the simple air core electromagnet (2.15 G/A). The area of the nearly field free region (null region) in the chamber volume can be controlled without changing a number of pole magnets. From the experimental results, it has been observed that in this field configuration the confinement of the primary electrons increases and leak width of plasma decreases with increasing the magnetic field. Thus the mean density, particle confinement time and the stability of the plasma increase with increasing magnetic field. In addition to this, it has been found that the radial uniformity of the plasma density explicitly depends on the VMMF. It is also shown that the VMMF controls the scavenging of confined primary electrons and confinement of primary electron increased with magnetic field which helps to boost up the plasma density.

SMILEI is a collaborative, open-source, object-oriented (C++) particle-in-cell code. To benefit from the latest advances in high-performance computing (HPC), SMILEI is co-developed by both physicists and HPC experts. The codes structures, capabilitie s, parallelization strategy and performances are discussed. Additional modules (e.g. to treat ionization or collisions), benchmarks and physics highlights are also presented. Multi-purpose and evolutive, SMILEI is applied today to a wide range of physics studies, from relativistic laser-plasma interaction to astrophysical plasmas.

Turbulence is a major factor limiting the achievement of better tokamak performance as it enhances the transport of particles, momentum and heat which hinders the foremost objective of tokamaks. Hence, understanding and possibly being able to control turbulence in tokamaks is of paramount importance, not to mention our intellectual curiosity of it.
Pulsed and CW operation of negative ion radio frequency surface plasma source with a solenoidal magnetic field is described. Dependences of a beam current on RF power, extraction voltage, solenoid magnetic field, gas flow are presented. Compact design of RF SPS is presented.
The development of parametric instabilities in a large scale inhomogeneous plasma with an incident laser beam composed of multiple-frequency components is studied theoretically and numerically. Firstly, theoretical analyses of the coupling between tw o laser beamlets with certain frequency difference $deltaomega_0$ for parametric instabilities is presented. It suggests that the two beamlets will be decoupled when $deltaomega_0$ is larger than certain thresholds, which are derived for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), and two plasmon decay (TPD), respectively. In this case, the parametric instabilities for the two beamlets develop independently and can be controlled at a low level provided the laser intensity for individual beamlet is low enough. Secondly, numerical simulations of parametric instabilities with two or more beamlets ($Nsim20$) have been carried out and the above theory model is validated. Simulations confirm that the development of parametric instabilities with multiple beamlets can be controlled at a low level, provided the threshold conditions for $deltaomega_0$ is satisfied, even though the total laser intensity is as high as $sim10^{15}$W/cm$^2$. With such a laser beam structure of multiple frequency components ($Ngtrsim20$) and total bandwidth of a few percentages ($gtrsim4%$), the parametric instabilities can be well-controlled.
