We introduce a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states that generalize the Z4 parafermion Read Rezayi state. The Z4 orbifold quantum Hall states occur at filling factors u = 2/(2m-p) for odd integers $m$ and $p$, and have a topological order with a neutral sector characterized by the orbifold conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ at radius $R=sqrt{p/2}$. When $p=1$ the state is Abelian. The state with $p=3$ is the $Z_4$ Read Rezayi state, and the series of $pge 3$ defines a sequence of non-Abelian states that resembles the Laughlin sequence. Our model is based on clustering of electrons in groups of four, and is formulated as a two fluid model in which each wire exhibits two phases: a weak clustered phase, where charge $e$ electrons coexist with charge $4e$ bosons and a strong clustered phase where the electrons are strongly bound in groups of 4. The transition between these two phases on a wire is mapped to the critical point of the 4 state clock model, which in turn is described by the orbifold conformal field theory. For an array of wires coupled in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, strongly clustered wires form a charge $4e$ bosonic Laughlin state with a chiral charge mode at the edge, but no neutral mode and a gap for single electrons. Coupled wires near the critical state form quantum Hall states with a gapless neutral mode described by the orbifold theory. The coupled wire approach allows us to employ the Abelian bosonization technique to fully analyze the physics of single wire, and then to extract most topological properties of the resulting non-Abelian quantum Hall states. These include the list of quasiparticles, their fusion rules, the correspondence between bulk quasiparticles and edge topological sectors, and most of the phases associated with quasiparticles winding one another.

In this paper we use a close connection between the coupled wire construction (CWC) of Abelian quantum Hall states and the theory of composite bosons to extract the Laughlin wave function and the hydrodynamic effective theory in the bulk, including t he Wen-Zee topological action, directly from the CWC. We show how rotational invariance can be recovered by fine-tuning the interactions. A simple recipe is also given to construct general Abelian quantum Hall states desceibed by the multi-component Wen-Zee action.
Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multi-body Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degrees of in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.
Quantum Hall matrix models are simple, solvable quantum mechanical systems which capture the physics of certain fractional quantum Hall states. Recently, it was shown that the Hall viscosity can be extracted from the matrix model for Laughlin states. Here we extend this calculation to the matrix models for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. These states, which were previously introduced by Blok and Wen, arise from the conformal blocks of Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory models. We show that the Hall viscosity computed from the matrix model coincides with a result of Read, in which the Hall viscosity is determined in terms of the weights of primary operators of an associated conformal field theory.
We study geometric aspects of the Laughlin fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states using a description of these states in terms of a matrix quantum mechanics model known as the Chern-Simons matrix model (CSMM). This model was proposed by Polychronakos a s a regularization of the noncommutative Chern-Simons theory description of the Laughlin states proposed earlier by Susskind. Both models can be understood as describing the electrons in a FQH state as forming a noncommutative fluid, i.e., a fluid occupying a noncommutative space. Here we revisit the CSMM in light of recent work on geometric response in the FQH effect, with the goal of determining whether the CSMM captures this aspect of the physics of the Laughlin states. For this model we compute the Hall viscosity, Hall conductance in a non-uniform electric field, and the Hall viscosity in the presence of anisotropy (or intrinsic geometry). Our calculations show that the CSMM captures the guiding center contribution to the known values of these quantities in the Laughlin states, but lacks the Landau orbit contribution. The interesting correlations in a Laughlin state are contained entirely in the guiding center part of the state/wave function, and so we conclude that the CSMM accurately describes the most important aspects of the physics of the Laughlin FQH states, including the Hall viscosity and other geometric properties of these states which are of current interest.

We propose and investigate a simple one-dimensional model for a single-channel quantum wire hosting electrons that interact repulsively and are subject to a significant spin-orbit interaction. We show that an external Zeeman magnetic field, applied a t the right angle to the Rashba spin-orbit axis, drives the wire into a correlated spin-density wave state with gapped spin and gapless charge excitations. By computing the ground-state degeneracies of the model with either (anti-)periodic or open boundary conditions, we conclude that the correlated spin-density state realizes a gapless symmetry-protected topological phase, as the ground state is unique in the ring geometry while it is two-fold degenerate in the wire with open boundaries. Microscopically the two-fold degeneracy is found to be protected by the conservation of the magnetization parity. Open boundaries induce localized zero-energy (midgap) states which are described, at the special Luther-Emery point of the model, by Majorana fermions. We find that spin densities at the open ends of the wire exhibit unusual long-ranged correlations despite the fact that all correlations in the bulk of the wire decay in a power-law or exponential fashion. Our study exposes the crucial importance of the long-ranged string operator needed to implement the correct commutation relations between spin densities at different points in the wire. Along the way we rederive the low-energy theory of Galilean-invariant electron systems in terms of current operators.
