Two primary facets of quantum technological advancement that hold great promise are quantum communication and quantum computation. For quantum communication, the canonical resource is entanglement. For quantum gate implementation, the resource is magic in an auxiliary system. It has already been shown that quantum coherence is the fundamental resource for the creation of entanglement. We argue on the similar spirit that quantum coherence is the fundamental resource when it comes to the creation of magic. This unifies the two strands of modern development in quantum technology under the common underpinning of existence of quantum superposition, quantified by the coherence in quantum theory. We also attempt to obtain magic monotones inspired from coherence monotones and vice versa. We further study the interplay between quantum coherence and magic in a qutrit system and that between quantum entanglement and magic in a qutrit-qubit setting.

Quantum coherence, the physical property underlying fundamental phenomena such as multi-particle interference and entanglement, has emerged as a valuable resource upon which exotic modern technologies are founded. In general, the most prominent adver sary of quantum coherence is noise arising from the interaction of the associated dynamical system with its environment. Under certain conditions, however, the existence of noise may drive quantum and classical systems to endure intriguing nontrivial effects. Along these lines, here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that when two indistinguishable particles co-propagate through quantum networks affected by noise, the system always evolves into a steady state in which coherences between certain separable states perpetually prevail. Furthermore, we show that the same steady state with surviving quantum coherences is reached irrespectively of the configuration in which the particles are prepared.

We investigate coherence in one- and two-photon optical systems, both theoretically and experimentally. In the first case, we develop the density operator representing a single photon state subjected to a non-dissipative coupling between observed (po larization) and unobserved (frequency) degrees of freedom. We show that an implementation of ``bang-bang quantum control protects photon polarization information from certain types of decoherence. In the second case, we investigate the existence of a decoherence-free subspace of the Hilbert space of two-photon polarization states under the action of a similar coupling. The density operator representation is developed analytically and solutions are obtained numerically. NOTE: This manuscript is taken from the authors undergraduate thesis (A.B. We investigate the coherence of quantum channels using the Choi-Jamiol{}kowski isomorphism. The relation between the coherence and the purity of the channel respects a duality relation. It characterizes the allowed values of coherence when the channe l has certain purity. This duality has been depicted via the Coherence-Purity (Co-Pu) diagrams. In particular, we study the quantum coherence of the unital and non-unital qubit channels and find out the allowed region of coherence for a fixed purity. We also study coherence of different incoherent channels, namely, incoherent operation (IO), strictly incoherent operation (SIO), physical incoherent operation (PIO) etc. Interestingly, we find that the allowed region for different incoherent operations maintain the relation $PIOsubset SIO subset IO$. In fact, we find that if PIOs are coherence preserving operations (CPO), its coherence is zero otherwise it has unit coherence and unit purity. Interestingly, different kinds of qubit channels can be distinguished using the Co-Pu diagram. The unital channels generally do not create coherence whereas some nonunital can. All coherence breaking channels are shown to have zero coherence, whereas, this is not usually true for entanglement breaking channels. It turns out that the coherence preserving qubit channels have unit coherence. Although the coherence of the Choi matrix of the incoherent channels might have finite values, its subsystem contains no coherence. This indicates that the incoherent channels can either be unital or nonunital under some conditions.

We report on the existence of quantum forces between nearby fragments of correlated matter that result due to the interference effects between the fragments. This effect explains the phenomenon of correlation-assisted tunneling and puts it in a broad er context. The magnitude of the reported force depends on the amount of coherence between different locations; it attains a maximum value for fragments in a perfect superfluid state and disappears entirely when the fragments are in the Mott Insulator state. The force can also be explained in terms of the Bohmian quantum potential. We illustrate the implications of this force on the transport of cold atoms through simple potential structures, the triple-well harmonic trap and optical lattices.
We study the quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems, especially the infinite dimensional bosonic systems in Fock space. We show that given the energy constraints, the relative entropy of coherence serves as a well-defined quantif ication of coherence in infinite dimensional systems. Via using the relative entropy of coherence, we also generalize the problem to multi-mode Fock space and special examples are considered. It is shown that with a finite average particle number, increasing the number of modes of light can enhance the relative entropy of coherence. With the mean energy constraint, our results can also be extended to other infinite-dimensional systems.
