A set of global optical potential parameters, DA1p, for deuterons with the $1p$-shell nuclei is obtained by simultaneously fitting 67 sets of experimental data of deuteron elastic scattering from uc{6}{Li}, uc{9}{Be}, uc{10}{B}, uc{11}{B}, uc{12}{C}, uc{13}{C}, uc{14}{N}, uc{16}{O} and uc{18}{O} with incident energies between 5.25 and 170 MeV. DA1p improves the description of the deuteron elastic scattering from the $1p$-shell nuclei with respect to the existing systematic deuteron potentials and can give satisfactory reproduction to the experimental data with radiative nuclei such as uc{9}{Li}, uc{10}{Be}, uc{14}{C} and uc{14}{O}.

Nuclei in the upper-$sd$ shell usually exhibit characteristics of spherical single particle excitations. In the recent years, employment of sophisticated techniques of gamma spectroscopy has led to observation of high spin states of several nuclei ne ar A$simeq$ 40. In a few of them multiparticle, multihole rotational states coexist with states of single particle nature. We have studied a few nuclei in this mass region experimentally, using various campaigns of the Indian National Gamma Array setup. We have compared and combined our empirical observations with the large-scale shell model results to interpret the structure of these nuclei. Indication of population of states of large deformation has been found in our data. This gives us an opportunity to investigate the interplay of single particle and collective degrees of freedom in this mass region.

The activation cross sections of (d,p), (d,2n), (d,3n), and (d,2p) reactions on 63,65Cu were measured in the energy range from 4 to 20 MeV using the stacked-foils technique. Then, following the available elastic-scattering data analysis that provided the optical potential for reaction cross sections calculations, an increased effort has been devoted to the breakup mechanism, the direct reaction stripping, and the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross section calculations, corrected for the breakup and stripping decrease of the total reaction cross section. The overall agreement between the measured and calculated deuteron activation cross sections proves the correctness of the nuclear mechanisms account, next to the simultaneous analysis of the elastic-scattering and reaction data.
A set of high resolution zero-degree inelastic proton scattering data on 24Mg, 28Si, 32S, and 40Ca provides new insight into the long-standing puzzle of the origin of fragmentation of the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) in sd-shell nuclei. Understanding is provided by state-of-the-art theoretical Random Phase Approximation (RPA) calculatios for deformed nuclei using for the first time a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction derived from the Argonne V18 potential with the unitary correlation operator method and supplemented by a phenomenological three-nucleon contact interaction. A wavelet analysis allows to extract significant scales both in the data and calculations characterizing the fine structure of the GDR. The fair agreement supports that the fine structure arises from ground-state deformation driven by alpha clustering.

An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.
A systematic shell model description of the experimental Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions in $^{42}$Ti, $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni is presented. These transitions have been recently measured via $beta$ decay of these $T_z$=-1 nu clei, produced in fragmentation reactions at GSI and also with ($^3${He},$t$) charge-exchange (CE) reactions corresponding to $T_z = + 1$ to $T_z = 0$ carried out at RCNP-Osaka.The calculations are performed in the $pf$ model space, using the GXPF1a and KB3G effective interactions. Qualitative agreement is obtained for the individual transitions, while the calculated summed transition strengths closely reproduce the observed ones.
