An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.

The scarce data systematics and complexity of deuteron interactions demand the update of both the experimental database and theoretical frame of deuteron activation cross sections. Various reactions induced by neutrons and protons following the deute ron breakup (BU) should be also taken into account. On the other hand, deuteron reaction cross sections recommended recently for high-priority elements are still based on data fit without predictive power. Purpose: Accurate new measurements of low-energy deuteron-induced reaction cross sections for monoisotopic (55Mn) natural manganese target enhance the related database as well as the opportunity of an unitary and consistent account of the related reaction mechanisms. Method: Activation cross sections of 54,56Mn, and 51Cr nuclei by deuterons on $^{55}$Mn were measured at energies <20 MeV by the stacked-foil technique and high resolution gamma spectrometry at the U-120M cyclotron of CANAM, NPI CAS. Then all available data for deuterons on 55Mn up to 50 MeV are analyzed paying particular attention to BU and direct reaction (DR) mechanisms. Results: Newly measured activation cross sections strengthen the deuteron database at low energies, at once with a consistent account for the first time of all available data. Conclusions: Due account of deuteron-induced reactions on 55Mn, including particularly the new experimental data at low energies, is provided by a suitable BU and DR assessment.
We present measurements of differential cross sections and the analyzing powers A_y, iT11, T20, T21, and T22 at E_c.m.=431.3 keV. In addition, an excitation function of iT11(theta_c.m.=87.8 degrees) for 431.3 <= E_c.m. <= 2000 keV is presented. These data are compared to calculations employing realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, both with and without three-nucleon forces. Excellent agreement with the tensor analyzing powers and cross section is found, while the Ay and iT11 data are found to be underpredicted by the calculations.
A study of photofission on 181Ta nucleus induced by bremsstrahlung photons with endpoint energies of 50 and 3500 MeV has been performed. The fission yields have been measured by using the induced-activity method in an off-line analysis. The absolute photofission cross sections for the tantalum target at 50 and 3500 MeV are found to be 5.4 pm 1.1 microb and 0.77pm0.11 mb, respectively, and the corresponding deduced fissilities are (0.23pm0.05) x 10^{-3} and (2.9 pm 0.9) x 10^{-3}. Mass- and charge-yield distributions were derived from the data. The results were compared with the simulated results from CRISP code for multi-modal fission by assuming symmetrical fission mode.

Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for 225,227Pa nuclei formed in fusion reactions of 19F + 206, 208Pb around fusion barrier energies. Mass-angle correlations do not indicate any quasi-fission like events in this bombarding energy rang e. Mass distributions were fitted by Gaussian distribution and mass variance extracted. At below-barrier energies, the mass variance was found to increase with decrease in energy for both nuclei. Results from present work were compared with existing data for induced fission of 224, 226Th and 228U around barrier energies. Enhancement in mass variance of 225, 227Pa nuclei at below-barrier energies shows evidence for presence of asymmetric fission events mixed with symmetric fission events. This is in agreement with the results of mass distributions of nearby nuclei 224, 226Th and 228U where two-mode fission process was observed. Two-mode feature of fission arises due to the shell effects changing the landscape of the potential energy surfaces at low excitation energies. The excitation-energy dependence of the mass variance gives strong evidence for survival of microscopic shell effects in fission of light actinide nuclei 225, 227Pa with initial excitation energy ~30 - 50 MeV.

A set of differential cross section of the three-body $^{2}$H($d$,$dp$)$n$ breakup reaction at 160 MeV deuteron beam energy are presented for 147 kinematically complete configurations near the quasi-free scattering kinematics. The experiment was perf ormed at KVI in Groningen, the Netherlands using the BINA detector. The cross-section data have been normalized to the $^{2}$H($d$,$d$)$^{2}$H elastic scattering cross section. The data are compared to the recent single-scattering approximation (SSA) calculations for three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions. Confronting the SSA predictions with the experimental data shows that SSA provides the correct order of magnitude of the cross-section data. The studied energy is probably too low to meet the SSA assumptions which prevents better accuracy of the description.
