This paper exploits the potential of physical layer security in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided two-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We focus on the downlink secure transmission in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. We first address the impact of massive MIMO on the maximum receive power based user association. We then derive the tractable upper bound expressions for the secrecy outage probability of a HetNets user.We show that the implementation of massive MIMO significantly improves the secrecy performance, which indicates that physical layer security could be a promising solution for safeguarding massive MIMO HetNets. Furthermore, we show that the secrecy outage probability of HetNets user first degrades and then improves with increasing the density of PBSs.

This paper explores the potential of wireless power transfer (WPT) in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) aided heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where massive MIMO is applied in the macrocells, and users aim to harvest as much energy as po ssible and reduce the uplink path loss for enhancing their information transfer. By addressing the impact of massive MIMO on the user association, we compare and analyze two user association schemes. We adopt the linear maximal ratio transmission beam-forming for massive MIMO power transfer to recharge users. By deriving new statistical properties, we obtain the exact and asymptotic expressions for the average harvested energy. Then we derive the average uplink achievable rate under the harvested energy constraint.
Two key traits of 5G cellular networks are much higher base station (BS) densities - especially in the case of low-power BSs - and the use of massive MIMO at these BSs. This paper explores how massive MIMO can be used to jointly maximize the offloadi ng gains and minimize the interference challenges arising from adding small cells. We consider two interference management approaches: joint transmission (JT) with local precoding, where users are served simultaneously by multiple BSs without requiring channel state information exchanges among cooperating BSs, and resource blanking, where some macro BS resources are left blank to reduce the interference in the small cell downlink. A key advantage offered by massive MIMO is channel hardening, which enables to predict instantaneous rates a priori. This allows us to develop a unified framework, where resource allocation is cast as a network utility maximization (NUM) problem, and to demonstrate large gains in cell-edge rates based on the NUM solution. We propose an efficient dual subgradient based algorithm, which converges towards the NUM solution. A scheduling scheme is also proposed to approach the NUM solution. Simulations illustrate more than 2x rate gain for 10th percentile users vs. an optimal association without interference management.
In this paper, we investigate a large intelligent surface-enhanced (LIS-enhanced) system, where a LIS is deployed to assist secure transmission. Our design aims to maximize the achievable secrecy rates in different channel models, i.e., Rician fading and (or) independent and identically distributed Gaussian fading for the legitimate and eavesdropper channels. In addition, we take into consideration an artificial noise-aided transmission structure for further improving system performance. The difficulties of tackling the aforementioned problems are the structure of the expected secrecy rate expressions and the non-convex phase shift constraint. To facilitate the design, we propose two frameworks, namely the sample average approximation based (SAA-based) algorithm and the hybrid stochastic projected gradient-convergent policy (hybrid SPG-CP) algorithm, to calculate the expectation terms in the secrecy rate expressions. Meanwhile, majorization minimization (MM) is adopted to address the non-convexity of the phase shift constraint. In addition, we give some analyses on two special scenarios by making full use of the expectation terms. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms effectively optimize the secrecy communication rate for the considered setup, and the LIS-enhanced system greatly improves secrecy performance compared to conventional architectures without LIS.
Pilot contamination, defined as the interference during the channel estimation process due to reusing the same pilot sequences in neighboring cells, can severely degrade the performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. In this paper , we propose a location-based approach to mitigating the pilot contamination problem for uplink multiple-input multiple-output systems. Our approach makes use of the approximate locations of mobile devices to provide good estimates of the channel statistics between the mobile devices and their corresponding base stations. Specifically, we aim at avoiding pilot contamination even when the number of base station antennas is not very large, and when multiple users from different cells, or even in the same cell, are assigned the same pilot sequence. First, we characterize a desired angular region of the target user at the serving base station based on the number of base station antennas and the location of the target user, and make the observation that in this region the interference is close to zero due to the spatial separability. Second, based on this observation, we propose pilot coordination methods for multi-user multi-cell scenarios to avoid pilot contamination. The numerical results indicate that the proposed pilot contamination avoidance schemes enhance the quality of the channel estimation and thereby improve the per-cell sum rate offered by target base stations.
Wireless communications empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent (meta)Surfaces (RISs) are recently gaining remarkable research attention due to the increased system design flexibility offered by RISs for diverse functionalities. In this paper, we con sider a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) physical layer security system with multiple data streams including one legitimate and one eavesdropping passive RISs, with the former being transparent to the eavesdropper and the latters presence being unknown at the legitimate link. We first focus on the eavesdropping subsystem and present a joint design framework for the eavesdroppers combining vector and the reflection coefficients of the eavesdropping RIS. Then, focusing on the secrecy rate maximization, we propose a physical layer security scheme that jointly designs the legitimate precoding vector and the Artificial Noise (AN) covariance matrix, as well as the legitimate combining vector and the reflection coefficients of the legitimate RIS. Our simulation results reveal that, in the absence of a legitimate RIS, transceiver spatial filtering and AN are incapable of offering nonzero secrecy rates, even for eavesdropping RISs with small numbers of elements. However, when a L-element legitimate RIS is deployed, confidential communication can be safeguarded against cases with even more than a 5L-element eavesdropping RIS.
