Pilot contamination, defined as the interference during the channel estimation process due to reusing the same pilot sequences in neighboring cells, can severely degrade the performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. In this paper, we propose a location-based approach to mitigating the pilot contamination problem for uplink multiple-input multiple-output systems. Our approach makes use of the approximate locations of mobile devices to provide good estimates of the channel statistics between the mobile devices and their corresponding base stations. Specifically, we aim at avoiding pilot contamination even when the number of base station antennas is not very large, and when multiple users from different cells, or even in the same cell, are assigned the same pilot sequence. First, we characterize a desired angular region of the target user at the serving base station based on the number of base station antennas and the location of the target user, and make the observation that in this region the interference is close to zero due to the spatial separability. Second, based on this observation, we propose pilot coordination methods for multi-user multi-cell scenarios to avoid pilot contamination. The numerical results indicate that the proposed pilot contamination avoidance schemes enhance the quality of the channel estimation and thereby improve the per-cell sum rate offered by target base stations.

We consider a single-cell massive MIMO system in which a base station (BS) with a large number of antennas transmits simultaneously to several single-antenna users in the presence of an attacker. The BS acquires the channel state information (CSI) bas ed on uplink pilot transmissions. In this work, we demonstrate the vulnerability of CSI estimation phase to malicious attacks. For that purpose, we study two attack models. In the first model, the attacker aims at minimizing the sum-rate of downlink transmissions by contaminating the uplink pilots. In the second model, the attacker exploits its in-band full-duplex capabilities to generate jamming signals in both the CSI estimation and data transmission phases. We study these attacks under two downlink power allocation strategies when the attacker knows and does not know the locations of the BS and users. The formulated problems are solved using stochastic optimization, Lagrangian minimization, and game-theoretic methods. A closed-form solution for a special case of the problem is obtained. Furthermore, we analyze the achievable individual secrecy rates under a pilot contamination attack, and provide an upper bound on these rates. Our results indicate that the proposed attacks degrade the throughput of a massive MIMO system by more than half.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel aging on the performance of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with pilot contamination. To take into account the channel aging effect due to user mobility, we firs t compute a channel estimate. We use it to derive novel closed-form expressions for the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) of CF massive MIMO systems with large-scale fading decoding and matched-filter receiver cooperation. The performance of a small-cell system is derived for comparison. It is found that CF massive MIMO systems achieve higher 95%-likely uplink SE in both low- and high-mobility conditions, and CF massive MIMO is more robust to channel aging. Fractional power control (FPC) is considered to compensate to limit the inter-user interference. The results show that, compared with full power transmission, the benefits of FPC are gradually weakened as the channel aging grows stronger.

A new scheme to resolve the intra-cell pilot collision for M2M communication in crowded massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is proposed. The proposed scheme permits those failed user equipments (UEs), judged by a strongest-user coll ision resolution (SUCR) protocol, to contend for the idle pilots, i.e., the pilots that are not selected by any UE in the initial step. This scheme is called as SUCR combined idle pilots access (SUCR-IPA). To analyze the performance of the SUCR-IPA scheme, we develop a simple method to compute the access success probability of the UEs in each random access slot (RAST). The simulation results coincide well with the analysis. It is also shown that, compared to the SUCR protocol, the proposed SUCR-IPA scheme increases the throughput of the system significantly, and thus decreases the number of access attempts dramatically.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output is a very important technology for future fifth-generation systems. However, massive massive multiple input multiple output systems are still limited because of pilot contamination, impacting the data rate due t o the non-orthogonality of pilot sequences transmitted by users in the same cell to the neighboring cells. We propose a channel estimation with complete knowledge of large-scale fading by using an orthogonal pilot reuse sequence to eliminate PC in edge users with poor channel quality based on the estimation of large-scale fading and performance analysis of maximum ratio transmission and zero forcing precoding methods. We derived the lower bounds on the achievable downlink DR and signal-to-interference noise ratio based on assigning PRS to a user grouping that mitigated this problem when the number of antenna elements approaches infinity The simulation results showed that a high DR can be achieved due to better channel estimation and reduced performance loss
This paper exploits the potential of physical layer security in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided two-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We focus on the downlink secure transmission in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. We first address the impact of massive MIMO on the maximum receive power based user association. We then derive the tractable upper bound expressions for the secrecy outage probability of a HetNets user.We show that the implementation of massive MIMO significantly improves the secrecy performance, which indicates that physical layer security could be a promising solution for safeguarding massive MIMO HetNets. Furthermore, we show that the secrecy outage probability of HetNets user first degrades and then improves with increasing the density of PBSs.
