The influence of the grain size in the magnetic properties of phase separated manganites is an important issue evidenced more than a decade ago. The formation of long range ordered phases is suppressed as the grain size decreases giving place to a metastable state instead of the ground state. In this work we present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in the prototypical manganite La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 as function of the grain size. The differences obtained using direct and indirect methods are discussed in the framework of domain walls in the ferromagnetic phase of the system.

We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 manganites. The low temperature state of both ystems is the result of a competition between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The s amples display magnetocaloric effect evidenced in an adiabatic temperature change during a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase . As additional features, La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 exhibits phase separation characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 displays inverse magnetocaloric effect in which temperature decreases while applying an external magnetic field. In both cases, a significant part of the magnetocaloric effect appears from non-reversible processes. As the traditional thermodynamic description of the effect usually deals with reversible transitions, we developed an alternative way to calculate the adiabatic temperature change in terms of the change of the relative ferromagnetic fraction induced by magnetic field. To evaluate our model, we performed direct measurement of the samples adiabatic temperature change by means of a differential thermal analysis. An excellent agreement has been obtained between experimental and calculated data. These results show that metamagnetic transition in manganites play an important role in the study of magnetic refrigeration.
We present combined experimental and theoretical investigations on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The relative cooling power (RCP) which quantifies the usefulness of a magnetocaloric (MC) material is estimated to be $app rox 300$ J/Kg near the ferromagnetic transition at $T_C approx 195$ K. This RCP is comparable to the best known MC materials. Additionally, the magnetic entropy change has a broad profile ($T_C - 50~{rm K} < T < T_C + 50~{rm K}$) leading to an enhancement in the working-range of temperatures for magnetocaloric based cooling. These features make Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$ a superior magnetocaloric material compared for example, to the nonmagnetic counterpart Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. We identify the mechanism for the enhanced RCP which can guide search for future MC materials.
The spinel NiCr$_2$O$_4$ is known to show a ferrimagnetic transition at $T_c = 70$~K, and magneto-structural transitions at $T_s = 30$~K and $T_o = 20$~K@. We present a detailed magnetic and magnetocaloric effect (MCE $= -Delta S_{M}(T)$) study acros s these transitions. The $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a positive anomaly at $T_c$, $T_s$, and $T_o$. In addition to these anomalies, we report a new unreported feature at $T approx 8.5$~K where $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a negative anomaly or the inverse MCE. An Arrot plot of the isothermal magnetization data reveals important information about the nature of the possible phases revealed in $-Delta S_{M}(T)$. We have also made a scaling analysis of the $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ data around these transitions. This analysis suggests that the transition at $T_c$ is a second-order Mean field like transition, the transition at $T_s$ is not second order and is non-mean field like, while the new transition at $T = 8.5$~K is non-mean field like but is second order in nature. Our study demonstrates that magnetocaloric effect is sensitive to magneto-structural changes in materials and can be used for the identification of new phases and transitions.
We report a large entropy change (DeltaS) below 300 K, peaking near TC= 220 K, due to isothermal change of magnetic field, for Gd4Co3, with a refrigeration capacity higher than that of Gd. Notably, the isothermal magnetization is nonhysteretic - an i mportant criterion for magnetic refrigeration without loss. DeltaS behavior is also compared with that of magnetoresistance.
In this paper, we investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in one-dimensional magnets with different types of ordering in the Ising model, Heisenberg, XY-model, the standard, planar, and modified Potts models. Exact analytical solutions to MCE as functions of exchange parameters, temperature, values and directions of an external magnetic field are obtained. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of MCE in the presence of frustrations in the system in a magnetic field are numerically computed in detail.
