We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 manganites. The low temperature state of both ystems is the result of a competition between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The samples display magnetocaloric effect evidenced in an adiabatic temperature change during a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase . As additional features, La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 exhibits phase separation characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 displays inverse magnetocaloric effect in which temperature decreases while applying an external magnetic field. In both cases, a significant part of the magnetocaloric effect appears from non-reversible processes. As the traditional thermodynamic description of the effect usually deals with reversible transitions, we developed an alternative way to calculate the adiabatic temperature change in terms of the change of the relative ferromagnetic fraction induced by magnetic field. To evaluate our model, we performed direct measurement of the samples adiabatic temperature change by means of a differential thermal analysis. An excellent agreement has been obtained between experimental and calculated data. These results show that metamagnetic transition in manganites play an important role in the study of magnetic refrigeration.

We present combined experimental and theoretical investigations on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The relative cooling power (RCP) which quantifies the usefulness of a magnetocaloric (MC) material is estimated to be $app rox 300$ J/Kg near the ferromagnetic transition at $T_C approx 195$ K. This RCP is comparable to the best known MC materials. Additionally, the magnetic entropy change has a broad profile ($T_C - 50~{rm K} < T < T_C + 50~{rm K}$) leading to an enhancement in the working-range of temperatures for magnetocaloric based cooling. These features make Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$ a superior magnetocaloric material compared for example, to the nonmagnetic counterpart Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. We identify the mechanism for the enhanced RCP which can guide search for future MC materials.
We investigate the behavior of ultrasharp metamagnetic transitions in La(5/8-y)Nd(y)Ca(3/8)MnO(3) manganites. These compounds change from a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state at low Nd doping to a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulator for high Nd content. At an intermediate doping a phase-separated state is established. At low temperatures (2 K), we observe an avalanche-like field-induced metamagnetic transition, when the entire compound changes abruptly from one phase to the other. We investigate the signatures of this ultrasharp transition using magnetization and specific heat measurements. We observe a first order transition in the specific heat associated with discontinuous jumps in the magnetization. A strong increase of the sample temperature is simultaneously observed. The results are interpret in terms of latent heat release from the field induced enhancement of the ferromagnetic fraction, triggering the avalanche process.
The possible application of the barocaloric effect to produce solid state refrigerators is a topic of interest in the field of applied physics. In this work, we present experimental data about the influence of external pressure on the magnetic proper ties of a manganite with phase separation. Using the Jahn Teller effect associated with the presence of the charge ordering we were able to follow the transition to the ferromagnetic state induced by pressure. We also demonstrated that external pressure can assist the ferromagnetic state, decreasing the magnetic field necessary to generate the magnetic transition.
The pivotal role of magnetic anisotropy in stabilising two-dimensional (2D) magnetism has been widely accepted, however, direct correlation between magnetic anisotropy and long-range magnetic ordering in the 2D limit is yet to be explored. Here, usin g angle- and temperature-dependent tunnelling magnetoresistance, we report unprecedented metamagnetic phase transitions in atomically-thin CrOCl, triggered by magnetic easy-axis flipping instead of the conventional spin flop mechanism. Few-layer CrOCl tunnelling devices of various thicknesses consistently show an in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with the easy axis aligned along the Cr-O-Cr direction (b-axis). Strikingly, with the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the easy-axis (H||c), magnetization of CrOCl does not follow the prevalent spin rotation and saturation pattern, but rather exhibits an easy-axis flipping from the in-plane to out-of-plane directions. Such magnetic anisotropy controlled metamagnetic phase transitions are manifested by a drastic upturn in tun- nelling current, which shows anomalous shifts towards higher H when temperature increases. By 2D mapping of tunnelling currents as a function of both temperature and H, we determine a unique ferrimagnetic state with a superstructure periodicity of five unit cells after the field-induced metam- agnetic transitions. The feasibility to control 2D magnetism by manipulating magnetic anisotropy may open enormous opportunities in spin-based device applications.
EuRhAl4Si2, crystallizes in tetragonal crystal structure and orders antiferromagnetically at ~12 K. The isothermal magnetization along the two principle directions is highly anisotropic despite Eu2+ being an S-state ion. The variation of entropy chan ge, which is a measure of MCE, with field and temperature, calculated from the isothermal magnetization data taken at various temperatures along the principal crystallographic directions present interesting behavior in EuRhAl4Si2. In the magnetically ordered state the entropy change is non-monotonic below spin flip fields; however, in the paramagnetic region, it is negative irrespective of the strength of applied magnetic field. For H || [001] the maximum entropy change at 7 T is -21 J/Kg K around TN, which is large and comparable to the largest known values in this temperature range. The variation of the MCE with field strongly depends upon the direction of the applied magnetic field. Magnetic phase diagram of EuRhAl4Si2 derived from M(H) data is also constructed.
