Self-organized quasi periodicity is one of the most puzzling dynamical phases observed in systems of non linear coupled oscillators. The single dynamical units are not locked to the periodic mean field they produce, but they still feature a coherent behavior, through an unexplained complex form of correlation. We consider a class of leaky integrate-and-fire oscillators on random sparse and massive networks with dynamical synapses, featuring self-organized quasi periodicity, and we show how complex collective oscillations arise from constructive interference of microscopic dynamics. In particular, we find a simple quantitative relationship between two relevant microscopic dynamical time scales and the macroscopic time scale of the global signal. We show that the proposed relation is a general property of collective oscillations, common to all the partially synchronous dynamical phases analyzed. We argue that an analogous mechanism could be at the origin of similar network dynamics.

We present results of conductance-noise experiments on disordered films of crystalline indium oxide with lateral dimensions 2microns to 1mm. The power-spectrum of the noise has the usual 1/f form, and its magnitude increases with inverse sample-volum e down to sample size of 2microns, a behavior consistent with un-correlated fluctuators. A colored second spectrum is only occasionally encountered (in samples smaller than 40microns), and the lack of systematic dependence of non-Gaussianity on sample parameters persisted down to the smallest samples studied (2microns). Moreover, it turns out that the degree of non-Gaussianity exhibits a non-trivial dependence on the bias V used in the measurements; it initially increases with V then, when the bias is deeper into the non-linear transport regime it decreases with V. We describe a model that reproduces the main observed features and argue that such a behavior arises from a non-linear effect inherent to electronic transport in a hopping system and should be observed whether or not the system is glassy.

Chemotaxis receptors in E. coli form clusters at the cell poles and also laterally along the cell body, and this clustering plays an important role in signal transduction. Recently, experiments using flourrescence imaging have shown that, during cell growth, lateral clusters form at positions approximately periodically spaced along the cell body. In this paper, we demonstrate within a lattice model that such spatial organization could arise spontaneously from a stochastic nucleation mechanism. The same mechanism may explain the recent observation of periodic aggregates of misfolded proteins in E. coli.

The robustness of connectivity and the efficiency of paths are incompatible in many real networks. We propose a self-organization mechanism for incrementally generating onion-like networks with positive degree-degree correlations whose robustness is nearly optimal. As a spatial extension of the generation model based on cooperative copying and adding shortcut, we show that the growing networks become more robust and efficient through enhancing the onion-like topological structure on a space. The reasonable constraint for locating nodes on the perimeter in typical surface growth as a self-propagation does not affect these properties of the tolerance and the path length. Moreover, the robustness can be recovered in the random growth damaged by insistent sequential attacks even without any remedial measures.
We study magnetic properties of spin glass SG systems under a random field (RF), beased on the suggestion that RFs can be induced by a weak transverse field in the compound LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$. We consider a cluster spin model that allows long-ran ge disordered interactions among clusters and short-range interactions inside the clusters, besides a local RF for each spin following a Gaussian distribution with standard deviation $Delta$. We adopt the one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) approach to get an exactly solvable single-cluster problem. We discuss the behavior of order parameters, specific heat $C_{m}$, nonlinear susceptibility $chi_3$ and phase diagrams for different disorder configurations. In the absence of RF, the $chi_3$ exhibits a divergence at $T_f$, while the $C_{m}$ shows a broad maximum at a temperature $T^{**}$ around 30$%$ above $T_f$, as expected for conventional SG systems. The presence of RF changes this scenario. The $C_{m}$ still shows the maximum at $T^{**}$ that is weakly dependent on $Delta$. However, the $T_f$ is displaced to lower temperatures, enhancing considerable the ration $T^{**}/T_f$. Furthermore, the divergence in $chi_3$ is replaced by a rounded maximum at a temperature $T^{*}$, which becomes increasingly higher than $T_f$ as $Delta$ enhances. As a consequence, the paramagnetic phase is unfolded in three regions: (i) a conventional paramagnetism ($T>T^{**}$; (ii) a region with formation of short-range order with frozen spins ($T^{*}<T<T^{**}$); (iii) a region with slow growth of free-energy barriers slowing down the spin dynamics before the SG transition ($T_f<T<T^{*}$) suggesting an intermediate Griffiths phase before the SG state. Our results reproduce qualitatively some findings of LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ as the rounded maximum of $chi_3$ behavior triggered by RF.
Although most networks in nature exhibit complex topology the origins of such complexity remains unclear. We introduce a model of a growing network of interacting agents in which each new agents membership to the network is determined by the agents e ffect on the networks global stability. It is shown that out of this stability constraint, scale free networks emerges in a self organized manner, offering an explanation for the ubiquity of complex topological properties observed in biological networks.
