We study the effects of light-cone fluctuations on the renormalized zero-point energy associated with a free massless scalar field in the presence of boundaries. In order to simulate light-cone fluctuations we introduce a space-time dependent random coefficient in the Klein-Gordon operator. We assume that the field is defined in a domain with one confined direction. For simplicity, we choose the symmetric case of two parallel plates separated by a distance $a$. The correction to the renormalized vacuum energy density between the plates goes as $1/a^{8}$ instead of the usual $1/a^{4}$ dependence for the free case. In turn we also show that light-cone fluctuations break down the vacuum pressure homogeneity between the plates.

In this paper we consider light-cone fluctuations arising as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the locally flat cosmic string spacetime. By setting the light-cone along the z-direction we are able to develop a full analysis to calculate the renormalized graviton two-point function, as well as the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function and the time delay (or advance) in the propagation of a light-pulse. We found that all these expressions depend upon the parameter characterizing the conical topology of the cosmic string spacetime and vanish in the absence of it. We also point out that at large distances from the cosmic string the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function is extremely small while in the opposite limit it logarithmically increases, improving the signal and thus, making possible the detection of such quantity.
In this paper, we investigate the thermal effect on the Casimir energy associated with a massive scalar quantum field confined between two large parallel plates in a CPT-even, aether-like Lorentz-breaking scalar field theory. In order to do that we c onsider a nonzero chemical potential for the scalar field assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at some finite temperature. The calculations of the energies are developed by using the Abel-Plana summation formula, and the corresponding results are analyzed in several asymptotic regimes of the parameters of the system, like mass, separations between the plates and temperature.
Complete set of modes and the Hadamard function are constructed for a scalar field inside and outside a sphere in (D+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime foliated by negative constant curvature spaces. We assume that the field obeys Robin boundary cond ition on the sphere. The contributions in the Hadamard function induced by the sphere are explicitly separated and the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor are investigated for the hyperbolic vacuum. In the flat spacetime limit the latter is reduced to the conformal vacuum in the Milne universe and is different from the maximally symmetric Bunch-Davies vacuum state. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor has a nonzero off-diagonal component that describes the energy flux in the radial direction. The latter is a purely sphere-induced effect and is absent in the boundary-free geometry. Depending on the constant in Robin boundary condition and also on the radial coordinate, the energy flux can be directed either from the sphere or towards the sphere. At early stages of the cosmological expansion the effects of the spacetime curvature on the sphere-induced VEVs are weak and the leading terms in the corresponding expansions coincide with those for a sphere in the Milne universe. The influence of the gravitational field is essential at late stages of the expansion. Depending on the field mass and the curvature coupling parameter, the decay of the sphere-induced VEVs, as functions of the time coordinate, is monotonic or damping oscillatory. At large distances from the sphere the fall-off of the sphere-induced VEVs, as functions of the geodesic distance, is exponential for both massless and massive fields.

We regard the Casimir energy of the universe as the main contribution to the cosmological constant. Using 5 dimensional models of the universe, the flat model and the warped one, we calculate Casimir energy. Introducing the new regularization, called {it sphere lattice regularization}, we solve the divergence problem. The regularization utilizes the closed-string configuration. We consider 4 different approaches: 1) restriction of the integral region (Randall-Schwartz), 2) method of 1) using the minimal area surfaces, 3) introducing the weight function, 4) {it generalized path-integral}. We claim the 5 dimensional field theories are quantized properly and all divergences are renormalized. At present, it is explicitly demonstrated in the numerical way, not in the analytical way. The renormalization-group function ($be$-function) is explicitly obtained. The renormalization-group flow of the cosmological constant is concretely obtained.
Quantum states with geometric duals are known to satisfy a stricter set of entropy inequalities than those obeyed by general quantum systems. The set of allowed entropies derived using the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula defines the Holographic Entropy C one (HEC). These inequalities are no longer satisfied once general quantum corrections are included by employing the Quantum Extremal Surface (QES) prescription. Nevertheless, the structure of the QES formula allows for a controlled study of how quantum contributions from bulk entropies interplay with HEC inequalities. In this paper, we initiate an exploration of this problem by relating bulk entropy constraints to boundary entropy inequalities. In particular, we show that requiring the bulk entropies to satisfy the HEC implies that the boundary entropies also satisfy the HEC. Further, we also show that requiring the bulk entropies to obey monogamy of mutual information (MMI) implies the boundary entropies also obey MMI.
