Direct time domain sampling of sub-THz coherent acoustic phonon spectra in SrTiO$_3$ using ultrafast X-ray diffraction

We synthesize sub-THz longitudinal quasi-monochromatic acoustic phonons in a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal using a SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice as an optical-acoustic transducer. The generated acoustic phonon spectrum is determined using ultrafast X-ray diffraction. The analysis of the generated phonon spectrum in the time domain reveals a k-vector dependent phonon lifetime. It is observed that even at sub-THz frequencies the phonon lifetime agrees with the 1/$omega^2$ power law known from Akhiezers model for hyper sound attenuation. The observed shift of the synthesized spectrum to the higher $q$ is discussed in the framework of non-linear effects appearing due to the high amplitude of the synthesized phonons.

Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigate optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudin al and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches first-principles calculations and previously measured elastic properties. We find an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting shear deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal structure and potentially their topological properties.
Effects of X-ray irradiation on the electronic structure of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LAO/STO) samples, grown at low oxygen pressure and post-annealed ex-situ till recovery of their stoichiometry, were investigated by soft-X-ray ARPES. The irradiation at low sample temperature below ~100K creates oxygen vacancies (VOs) injecting Ti t2g-electrons into the interfacial mobile electron system (MES). At this temperature the oxygen out-diffusion is suppressed, and the VOs are expected to appear mostly in the top STO layer. However, we observe a pronounced three-dimensional (3D) character of the X-ray generated MES in our samples, indicating its large extension into the STO depth, which contrasts to the purely two-dimensional (2D) character of the MES in standard stoichiometric LAO/STO samples. Based on self-interaction-corrected DFT calculations of the MES induced by VOs at the interface and in STO bulk, we discuss possible mechanisms of this puzzling three-dimensionality. They may involve VOs remnant in the deeper STO layers, photoconductivity-induced metallic states as well as more exotic mechanisms such as X-ray induced formation of Frenkel pairs.

The heterostructure consisting of the Mott insulator LaVO$_3$ and the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ is considered a promising candidate for future photovoltaic applications. Not only does the (direct) excitation gap of LaVO$_3$ match well the solar spectr um, but its correlated nature and predicted built-in potential, owing to the non-polar/polar interface when integrated with SrTiO$_3$, also offer remarkable advantages over conventional solar cells. However, experimental data beyond the observation of a thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition is scarce and a profound, microscopic understanding of the electronic properties is still lacking. By means of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy as well as resistivity and Hall effect measurements we study the electrical properties, band bending, and band alignment of LaVO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. We find a critical LaVO$_3$ thickness of five unit cells, confinement of the conducting electrons to exclusively Ti 3$d$ states at the interface, and a potential gradient in the film. From these findings we conclude on electronic reconstruction as the driving mechanism for the formation of the metallic interface in LaVO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$.
Cylindrical BaTiO3 nanorods embedded in (100)-oriented SrTiO3 epitaxial film in a brush-like configuration are investigated in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire model. It is shown that strain compatibility at BaTiO3/SrTiO3 interfaces ke eps BaTiO3 nanorods in the rhombohedral phase even at room temperature. Depolarization field at the BaTiO3/SrTiO3 interfaces is reduced by an emission of the 109-degree or 71-degree domain boundaries. In case of nanorods of about 10-80 nm diameter, the ferroelectric domains are found to form a quadruplet with a robust flux-closure arrangement of the in-plane components of the spontaneous polarization. The out-of-plane components of the polarization are either balanced or oriented up or down along the nanorod axis. Switching of the out-of-plane polarization with coercive field of about $5.10^6$ V/m occurs as a collapse of a 71-degree cylindrical domain boundary formed at the curved circumference surface of the nanorod. The remnant domain quadruplet configuration is chiral, with the $C_4$ macroscopic symmetry. More complex stable domain configurations with coexisting clockwise and anticlockwise quadruplets contain interesting arrangement of strongly curved 71-degree boundaries.
Non-collinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are attracting a renewed interest fueled by possible fine engineering of several magnetic interactions, notably the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This allows the stabilizat ion of complex chiral spin textures such as chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs), spin spirals, and magnetic skyrmions. We report here on the ultrafast behavior of chiral DWs after optical pumping in perpendicularly magnetized asymmetric multilayers, probed using time-resolved circular dichroism in x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (CD-XRMS). We observe a picosecond transient reduction of the CD-XRMS, which is attributed to the spin current-induced coherent and incoherent torques within the continuously dependent spin texture of the DWs. We argue that a specific demagnetization of the inner structure of the DW induces a flow of hot spins from the interior of the neighboring magnetic domains. We identify this time-varying change of the DW textures shortly after the laser pulse as a distortion of the homochiral Neel shape toward a transient mixed Bloch-Neel-Bloch textures along a direction transverse to the DW. Our study highlights how time-resolved CD-XRMS can be a unique tool for studying the time evolution in other systems showing a non-collinear electric/magnetic ordering such as skyrmion lattices, conical/helical phases, as well as the recently observed antiskyrmion lattices, in metallic or insulating materials.
