We investigate electron transport across a complex oxide heterointerface of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) on Nb:SrTiO$_3$ (Nb:STO) at different temperatures. For this, we employ the conventional current-voltage method as well as the technique of Ballistic Electron Emission Microscopy (BEEM), which can probe lateral inhomogeneities in transport at the nanometer scale. From current-voltage measurements, we find that the Schottky Barrier height (SBH) at the LSMO/Nb:STO interface decreases at low temperatures accompanied by a larger than unity ideality factor. This is ascribed to the tunneling dominated transport caused by the narrowing of the depletion width at the interface. However, BEEM studies of such unbiased interfaces, do not exhibit SBH lowering at low temperatures, implying that this is triggered by the modification of the interface due to an applied bias and is not an intrinsic property of the interface. Interestingly, the SBH at the nanoscale, as extracted from BEEM studies, at different locations in the device is found to be spatially homogeneous and similar both at room temperature and at low temperatures. Our results highlight the application of BEEM in characterizing electron transport and their homogeneity at such unbiased complex oxide interfaces and yields new insights into the origin of the temperature dependence of the SBH at biased interfaces.

Despite the ubiquity of applications of heat transport across nanoscale interfaces, including integrated circuits, thermoelectrics, and nanotheranostics, an accurate description of phonon transport in these systems remains elusive. Here we present a theoretical and computational framework to describe phonon transport with position, momentum and scattering event resolution. We apply this framework to a single material spherical nanoparticle for which the multidimensional resolution offers insight into the physical origin of phonon thermalization, and length-scale dependent anisotropy of steady-state phonon distributions. We extend the formalism to handle interfaces explicitly and investigate the specific case of semi-coherent materials interfaces by computing the coupling between phonons and interfacial strain resulting from aperiodic array of misfit dislocations. Our framework quantitatively describes the thermal interface resistance within the technologically relevant Si-Ge heterostructures. In future, this formalism could provide new insight into coherent and driven phonon effects in nanoscale materials increasingly accessible via ultrafast, THz and near-field spectroscopies.
Using a combination of vertical transport measurements across and lateral transport measurements along the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterointerface, we demonstrate that significant potential barrier lowering and band bending are the cause of interfaci al metallicity. Barrier lowering and enhanced band bending extends over 2.5 nm into LaAlO$_{3}$ as well as SrTiO$_{3}$. We explain origins of high-temperature carrier saturation, lower carrier concentration, and higher mobility in the sample with the thinnest LaAlO$_{3}$ film on a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate. Lateral transport results suggest that parasitic interface scattering centers limit the low-temperature lateral electron mobility of the metallic channel.
We investigate the electron transport properties of a model magnetic molecule formed by two magnetic centers whose exchange coupling can be altered with a longitudinal electric field. In general we find a negative differential conductance at low temp eratures originating from the different scattering amplitudes of the singlet and triplet states. More interestingly, when the molecule is strongly coupled to the leads and the potential drop at the magnetic centers is only weakly dependent on the magnetic configuration, we find that there is a critical voltage V_C at which the current becomes independent of the temperature. This corresponds to a peak in the low temperature current noise. In such limit we demonstrate that the quadratic current fluctuations are proportional to the product between the conductance fluctuations and the temperature.
The transversal and longitudinal resistance in the quantum Hall effect regime was measured in a Si MOSFET sample in which a slot-gate allows one to vary the electron density and filling factor in different parts of the sample. In case of unequal gate voltages, the longitudinal resistances on the opposite sides of the sample differ from each other because the originated Hall voltage difference is added to the longitudinal voltage only on one side depending on the gradient of the gate voltages and the direction of the external magnetic field. After subtracting the Hall voltage difference, the increase in longitudinal resistance is observed when electrons on the opposite sides of the slot occupy Landau levels with different spin orientations.
We report a memory resistance (memristor) behavior with nonlinear current-voltage characteristics and bipolar hysteretic resistance switching in the nanocolumnar manganite (LSMO) films. The switching from a high (HRS) to a low (LRS) resistance occurs at a bias field ~1 MV/cm. Applied electric field drops mostly at the insulating interfacial LSMO layer and couples to correlated polarons at the LSMO(111)/LSMO(111) vertical interfaces. The observed memristance behaviour has an electronic (polaronic) origin and is caused by an electric-field-controlled Jahn-Teller (JT) effect, followed by the orbital reconstruction and formation of a metastable orbitally disordered interfacial phase (LRS). Compared to the earlier reported ionic memristor in Ti-O films, an electronic (polaronic) nano-sized LSMO memristor shows an additional (re-entrant) LRS-HRS switching at higher fields because of the second minimum in the elastic energy of a JT system.
