We derive a method to reconstruct Gaussian signals from linear measurements with Gaussian noise. This new algorithm is intended for applications in astrophysics and other sciences. The starting point of our considerations is the principle of minimum Gibbs free energy which was previously used to derive a signal reconstruction algorithm handling uncertainties in the signal covariance. We extend this algorithm to simultaneously uncertain noise and signal covariances using the same principles in the derivation. The resulting equations are general enough to be applied in many different contexts. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm by applying it to specific example situations and compare it to algorithms not allowing for uncertainties in the noise covariance. The results show that the method we suggest performs very well under a variety of circumstances and is indeed qualitatively superior to the other methods in cases where uncertainty in the noise covariance is present.

We present a new Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm for CMB analysis in the low signal-to-noise regime. This method builds on and complements the previously described CMB Gibbs sampler, and effectively solves the low signal-to-noise inefficiency prob lem of the direct Gibbs sampler. The new algorithm is a simple Metropolis-Hastings sampler with a general proposal rule for the power spectrum, C_l, followed by a particular deterministic rescaling operation of the sky signal. The acceptance probability for this joint move depends on the sky map only through the difference of chi-squared between the original and proposed sky sample, which is close to unity in the low signal-to-noise regime. The algorithm is completed by alternating this move with a standard Gibbs move. Together, these two proposals constitute a computationally efficient algorithm for mapping out the full joint CMB posterior, both in the high and low signal-to-noise regimes.

Non-parametric imaging and data analysis in astrophysics and cosmology can be addressed by information field theory (IFT), a means of Bayesian, data based inference on spatially distributed signal fields. IFT is a statistical field theory, which perm its the construction of optimal signal recovery algorithms. It exploits spatial correlations of the signal fields even for nonlinear and non-Gaussian signal inference problems. The alleviation of a perception threshold for recovering signals of unknown correlation structure by using IFT will be discussed in particular as well as a novel improvement on instrumental self-calibration schemes. IFT can be applied to many areas. Here, applications in in cosmology (cosmic microwave background, large-scale structure) and astrophysics (galactic magnetism, radio interferometry) are presented.
Scattered light noise affects the sensitivity of gravitational waves detectors. The characterization of such noise is needed to mitigate it. The time-varying filter empirical mode decomposition algorithm is suitable for identifying signals with time- dependent frequency such as scattered light noise (or scattering). We present a fully automated pipeline based on the pytvfemd library, a python implementation of the tvf-EMD algorithm, to identify objects inducing scattering in the gravitational-wave channel with their motion. The pipeline application to LIGO Livingston O3 data shows that most scattering noise is due to the penultimate mass at the end of the X-arm of the detector (EXPUM) and with a motion in the micro-seismic frequency range.
The flicker-noise spectroscopy (FNS) approach is used to determine the dynamic characteristics of neuromagnetic responses by analyzing the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals recorded as the response of a group of control human subjects and a patie nt with photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) to equiluminant flickering stimuli of different color combinations. Parameters characterizing the analyzed stochastic biomedical signals for different frequency bands are identified. It is shown that the classification of the parameters of analyzed MEG responses with respect to different frequency bands makes it possible to separate the contribution of the chaotic component from the overall complex dynamics of the signals. It is demonstrated that the chaotic component can be adequately described by the anomalous diffusion approximation in the case of control subjects. On the other hand, the chaotic component for the patient is characterized by a large number of high-frequency resonances. This implies that healthy organisms can suppress the perturbations brought about by the flickering stimuli and reorganize themselves. The organisms affected by photosensitive epilepsy no longer have this ability. This result also gives a way to simulate the separate stages of the brain cortex activity in vivo. The examples illustrating the use of the FNS device for identifying even the slightest individual differences in the activity of human brains using their responses to external standard stimuli show a unique possibility to develop the individual medicine of the future.
We investigate the use of the Multiple Optimised Parameter Estimation and Data compression algorithm (MOPED) for data compression and faster evaluation of likelihood functions. Since MOPED only guarantees maintaining the Fisher matrix of the likeliho od at a chosen point, multimodal and some degenerate distributions will present a problem. We present examples of scenarios in which MOPED does faithfully represent the true likelihood but also cases in which it does not. Through these examples, we aim to define a set of criteria for which MOPED will accurately represent the likelihood and hence may be used to obtain a significant reduction in the time needed to calculate it. These criteria may involve the evaluation of the full likelihood function for comparison.
