We investigate the presence of soliton solutions in some classes of nonlinear partial differential equations, namely generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers, Korteveg-de Vries-Huxley, and Korteveg-de Vries-Burgers-Huxley equations, which combine effects of diffusion, dispersion, and nonlinearity. We emphasize the chiral behavior of the travelling solutions, whose velocities are determined by the parameters that define the equation. For some appropriate choices, we show that these equations can be mapped onto equations of motion of relativistic 1+1 dimensional phi^{4} and phi^{6} field theories of real scalar fields. We also study systems of two coupled nonlinear equations of the types mentioned.

We study an imbibition problem for porous media. When a wetted layer is above a dry medium, gravity leads to the propagation of the water downwards into the medium. In experiments, the occurrence of fingers was observed, a phenomenon that can be desc ribed with models that include hysteresis. In the present paper, we describe a single finger in a moving frame and set up a free boundary problem to describe the shape and the motion of one finger that propagates with a constant speed. We show the existence of solutions to the travelling wave problem and investigate the system numerically.
We use a geometric approach to prove the existence of smooth travelling wave solutions of a nonlinear diffusion-reaction equation with logistic kinetics and a convex nonlinear diffusivity function which changes sign twice in our domain of interest. W e determine the minimum wave speed, c*, and investigate its relation to the spectral stability of the travelling wave solutions.

Space-time wave packets can propagate invariantly in free space with arbitrary group velocity thanks to the spatio-temporal correlation. Here it is proved that the space-time wave packets are stable in dispersive media as well and free from the sprea d in time caused by material dispersion. Furthermore, the law of anomalous refraction for space-time wave packets is generalized to the weakly dispersive situation. These results reveal new potential of space-time wave packets for the applications in real dispersive media.
We consider a class of multidimensional conservation laws with vanishing nonlinear diffusion and dispersion terms. Under a condition on the relative size of the diffusion and dispersion coefficients, we establish that the diffusive-dispersive solutio ns are uniformly bounded in a space Lp ($p$ arbitrary large, depending on the nonlinearity of the diffusion) and converge to the classical, entropy solution of the corresponding multidimensional, hyperbolic conservation law. Previous results were restricted to one-dimensional equations and specific spaces Lp. Our proof is based on DiPernas uniqueness theorem in the class of entropy measure-valued solutions.
Surveys on wave propagation in dispersive media have been limited since the pioneering work of Sommerfeld [Ann. Phys. 349, 177 (1914)] by the presence of branches in the integral expression of the wave function. In this article, a method is proposed to eliminate these critical branches and hence to establish a modal expansion of the time-dependent wave function. The different components of the transient waves are physically interpreted as the contributions of distinct sets of modes and characterized accordingly. Then, the modal expansion is used to derive a modified analytical expression of the Sommerfeld precursor improving significantly the description of the amplitude and the oscillating period up to the arrival of the Brillouin precursor. The proposed method and results apply to all waves governed by the Helmholtz equations.
