A sharp feature in the charge-density excitation spectra of single-crystal MgB$_{2}$, displaying a remarkable cosine-like, periodic energy dispersion with momentum transfer ($q$) along the $c^{*}$-axis, has been observed for the first time by high-resolution non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). Time-dependent density-functional theory calculations show that the physics underlying the NIXS data is strong coupling between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, mediated by large crystal local-field effects. As a result, the small-$q$ collective mode residing in the single-particle excitation gap of the B $pi$ bands reappears periodically in higher Brillouin zones. The NIXS data thus embody a novel signature of the layered electronic structure of MgB$_{2}$.

We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra ha s been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar to $alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ hematite.
We report on a Raman scattering investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW), quasi two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides $R$Te$_3$ ($R$= La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) at ambient pressure, and of LaTe$_3$ and CeTe$_3$ under externally applied pressure. The observed phonon peaks can be ascribed to the Raman active modes for both the undistorted as well as the distorted lattice in the CDW state by means of a first principles calculation. The latter also predicts the Kohn anomaly in the phonon dispersion, driving the CDW transition. The integrated intensity of the two most prominent modes scales as a characteristic power of the CDW-gap amplitude upon compressing the lattice, which provides clear evidence for the tight coupling between the CDW condensate and the vibrational modes.
In the optical conductivity of four different manganites with commensurate charge order (CO), strong peaks appear in the meV range below the ordering temperature T_{CO}. They are similar to those reported for one-dimensional charge density waves (CDW ) and are assigned to pinned phasons. The peaks and their overtones allow one to obtain, for La{1-n/8}Ca{n/8}$MnO{3} with n = 5, 6, the electron-phonon coupling, the effective mass of the CO system, and its contribution to the dielectric constant. These results support a description of the CO in La-Ca manganites in terms of moderately weak-coupling and of the CDW theory.
We present {it ab-initio} time-dependent density-functional theory calculation results for low-energy collective electron excitations in $textrm{MgB}_2$. The existence of a long-lived collective excitation corresponding to coherent charge density flu ctuations between the boron $sigma$- and $pi$- bands ($sigmapi$ mode) is demonstrated. This mode has a sine-like oscillating dispersion for energies below 0.5 eV. At even lower energy we find another collective mode ($sigmasigma$ mode). We show the strong impact of local-field effects on dielectric functions in MgB$_2$. These effects account for the long q-range behavior of the modes. We discuss the physics that these collective excitations bring to the energy region typical for lattice vibrations.

We report an infrared spectroscopy study of the axion topological insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$ for which the Eu moments exhibit an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_N simeq 18 mathrm{K}$. The low energy response is composed of a wea k Drude peak at the origin, a pronounced infrared-active phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ and a free carrier plasma edge around 600 cm$^{-1}$. The interband transitions start above 800 cm$^{-1}$ and give rise to a series of weak absorption bands at 5,000 and 12,000 cm$^{-1}$ and strong ones at 20,000, 27,500 and 32,000 cm$^{-1}$. The AFM transition gives rise to pronounced anomalies of the charge response in terms of a cusp-like maximum of the free carrier scattering rate around $T_N$ and large magnetic splittings of the interband transitions at 5,000 and 12,000 cm$^{-1}$. The phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ has also an anomalous temperature dependence around $T_N$ which suggests that it couples to the fluctuations of the Eu spins. The combined data provide evidence for a strong interaction amongst the charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom.
