We report on a Raman scattering investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW), quasi two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides $R$Te$_3$ ($R$= La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) at ambient pressure, and of LaTe$_3$ and CeTe$_3$ under externally applied pressure. The observed phonon peaks can be ascribed to the Raman active modes for both the undistorted as well as the distorted lattice in the CDW state by means of a first principles calculation. The latter also predicts the Kohn anomaly in the phonon dispersion, driving the CDW transition. The integrated intensity of the two most prominent modes scales as a characteristic power of the CDW-gap amplitude upon compressing the lattice, which provides clear evidence for the tight coupling between the CDW condensate and the vibrational modes.

Recently, the switching between the different charge-ordered phases of 1T-TaS2 has been probed by ultrafast techniques, revealing unexpected phenomena such as hidden metastable states and peculiar photoexcited charge patterns. Here, we apply broadban d pump-probe spectroscopy with varying excitation energy to study the ultrafast optical properties of 1T-TaS2 in the visible regime. By scanning the excitation energy in the near-IR region we unravel the coupling between different charge excitations and the low-lying charge-density wave state. We find that the amplitude mode of the charge-density wave exhibits strong coupling to a long-lived doublon state that is photoinduced in the center of the star-shaped charge-ordered Ta clusters by the near-IR optical excitation.
Electron-phonon-driven charge density waves can in some circumstances allow electronic correlations to become predominant, driving a system into a Mott insulating state. New insights into both the Mott state and preceding charge density wave may resu lt from observations of the coupled dynamics of their underlying degrees of freedom. Here, tunneling injection of single electrons into the upper Hubbard band of the Mott charge-density-wave material 1T-TaS2 reveals extraordinarily narrow electronic excitations which couple to amplitude mode phonons associated with the charge density waves periodic lattice distortion. This gives a vivid microscopic view of the interplay between excitations of the Mott state and the lattice dynamics of its charge density wave precursor.

Monolayer 2H-NbSe2 has recently been shown to be a 2-dimensional superconductor, with a coexisting charge-density wave (CDW). As both phenomena are intimately related to electron-lattice interaction, a natural question is how superconductivity and CD W are interrelated through electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is important to the understanding of 2-dimensional superconductivity. This work investigates the superconductivity of monolayer NbSe2 in CDW phase using the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg formalism based on first principles calculations. The mechanism of the competition between and coexistence of the superconductivity and CDW is studied in detail by analyzing EPC. It is found that the intra-pocket scattering is related to superconductivity, leading to almost constant value of superconducting gaps on parts of the Fermi surface. The inter-pocket scattering is found to be responsible for CDW, leading to partial or full bandgap on the remaining Fermi surface. Recent experiment indicates that there is transitioning from regular superconductivity in thin-film NbSe2 to two-gap superconductivity in the bulk, which is shown here to have its origin in the extent of Fermi surface gapping of K and K pockets induced by CDW. Overall blue shifts of the phonons and sharp decrease of Eliashberg spectrum are found when the CDW forms.
A sharp feature in the charge-density excitation spectra of single-crystal MgB$_{2}$, displaying a remarkable cosine-like, periodic energy dispersion with momentum transfer ($q$) along the $c^{*}$-axis, has been observed for the first time by high-re solution non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). Time-dependent density-functional theory calculations show that the physics underlying the NIXS data is strong coupling between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, mediated by large crystal local-field effects. As a result, the small-$q$ collective mode residing in the single-particle excitation gap of the B $pi$ bands reappears periodically in higher Brillouin zones. The NIXS data thus embody a novel signature of the layered electronic structure of MgB$_{2}$.
Scanning tunnelling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction show a dimerization-like reconstruction in the one-dimensional atomic chains on Bi(114) at low temperatures. While one-dimensional systems are generally unstable against such a distor tion, its observation is not expected for this particular surface, since there are several factors that should prevent it: One is the particular spin texture of the Fermi surface, which resembles a one-dimensional topological state, and spin protection should hence prevent the formation of the reconstruction. The second is the very short nesting vector $2 k_F$, which is inconsistent with the observed lattice distortion. A nesting-driven mechanism of the reconstruction is indeed excluded by the absence of any changes in the electronic structure near the Fermi surface, as observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. However, distinct changes in the electronic structure at higher binding energies are found to accompany the structural phase transition. This, as well as the observed short correlation length of the pairing distortion, suggest that the transition is of the strong coupling type and driven by phonon entropy rather than electronic entropy.
