By accelerating a Bose-Einstein condensate in a controlled way across the edge of the Brillouin zone of a 1D optical lattice, we investigate the stability of the condensate in the vicinity of the zone edge. Through an analysis of the visibility of the interference pattern after a time-of-flight and the widths of the interference peaks, we characterize the onset of instability as the acceleration of the lattice is decreased. We briefly discuss the significance of our results with respect to recent theoretical work.

We investigate the superfluid properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a one dimensional periodic potential. We study, both analytically (in the tight binding limit) and numerically, the Bloch chemical potential, the Bloch energy and the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, and we introduce {it two} different, density dependent, effective masses and group velocities. The Bogoliubov spectrum predicts the existence of sound waves, and the arising of energetic and dynamical instabilities at critical values of the BEC quasi-momentum which dramatically affect its coherence properties. We investigate the dependence of the dipole and Bloch oscillation frequencies in terms of an effective mass averaged over the density of the condensate. We illustrate our results with several animations obtained solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We use a two-photon dressing field to create an effective vector gauge potential for Bose-condensed Rb atoms in the F=1 hyperfine ground state. The dressed states in this Raman field are spin and momentum superpositions, and we adiabatically load the atoms into the lowest energy dressed state. The effective Hamiltonian of these neutral atoms is like that of charged particles in a uniform magnetic vector potential, whose magnitude is set by the strength and detuning of Raman coupling. The spin and momentum decomposition of the dressed states reveals the strength of the effective vector potential, and our measurements agree quantitatively with a simple single-particle model. While the uniform effective vector potential described here corresponds to zero magnetic field, our technique can be extended to non-uniform vector potentials, giving non-zero effective magnetic fields.
The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and an elliptic function potential models a quasi-one-dimensional repulsive dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. New families of stationary solution s are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the linear Schrodinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods. All trivial-phase stable solutions are deformations of the ground state of the linear Schrodinger equation. Our results show that a large number of condensed atoms is sufficient to form a stable, periodic condensate. Physically, this implies stability of states near the Thomas-Fermi limit.
Using a standing light wave trap, a stable quasi-one-dimensional attractive dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate can be realized. In a mean-field approximation, this phenomenon is modeled by the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with attractive non linearity and an elliptic function potential of which a standing light wave is a special case. New families of stationary solutions are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the linear Schrodinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods. Trivial-phase solutions are experimentally stable provided they have nodes and their density is localized in the troughs of the potential. Stable time-periodic solutions are also examined.
We investigate the dynamical behavior of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a spherical power law potential restricted to the repulsive case, from the dynamical system formalism point of view. A five-dimensional d ynamical system is found (due the symmetry of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation interacting with a potential), where the Thomas-Fermi approximation constrains the parameter space of solutions. We show that for values of the power law exponent equal or smaller than 2 the system seems to be stable. However, when the corresponding exponent is bigger than 2, the instability of the system grows when the power law exponent grows, indicating that large values of the aforementioned parameter can be related to a loss in the number of particles from the condensed state. This fact can be used also to show that the stability conditions of the condensate are highly sensitive to the exponent associated with the external potential.
