We report the first observation of a striking history dependence of the structure function of the vortex matter in the peak effect regime in a Nb single crystal by using small angle neutron scattering combined with {it in situ} magnetic susceptibility measurements. Metastable phases of vortex matter, supercooled vortex liquid and superheated vortex solid, have been identified. We interpret our results as direct structural evidence for a first-order solid-liquid transition at the peak effect.

We report the first direct observation of a disordered vortex matter phase existing near the edge of a bulk type-II superconductor Nb using a novel position-sensitive neutron diffraction technique. This edge-contaminated vortex state was implicated i n previous studies using transport techniques and was postulated to have played a significant role in the behavior of vortex dynamics in a wide range of type-II superconductors. It is found that upon thermal annealing, the vortex matter in the bulk undergoes re-ordering, suggesting that the edge-contaminated bulk vortex state is metastable. The edge vortex state remains disordered after repeated thermal annealing, indicating spatial coexistence of a vortex glass with a Bragg glass. This observation resolves many outstanding issues concerning the peak effect in type-II superconductors.
The scope of magnetic neutron scattering has been expanded by the observation of electronic Dirac dipoles (anapoles) that are polar (parity-odd) and magnetic (time-odd). A zero-magnetization ferromagnet Sm0.976Gd0.024Al2 with a diamond-type structure presents Dirac multipoles at basis-forbidden reflections that include the standard (2, 2, 2) reflection. Magnetic amplitudes measured at four such reflections are in full accord with a structure factor calculated from the appropriate magnetic space group.
We demonstrate that the transition from the high-field state to the vortex state in a nanomagnetic disk shows the magnetic equivalent of supercooling. This is evidence that this magnetic transition can be described in terms of a modified Landau first -order phase transition. To accomplish this we have measured the bulk magnetization of single magnetic disks using nanomechanical torsional resonator torque magnetometry. This allows observation of single vortex creation events without averaging over an array of disks or over multiple runs.
A scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope (SSM) is used to study the magnetic imaging of dynamic motion of quantized interlayer vortices induced by the Lorentz force in anisotropic high-Tc La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 singl e crystals. It is found that 3 modes of flux motion switch depending on the transport current. By increasing the current a transition from the creep-like behavior of vortices to a steady flow of vortices was observed. Even higher current induced a continuous expansion of vortex-flow area indicating an inhomogeneous distribution of various pinning centers.

The order of the vortex state in La_{1.9} Sr_{0.1} CuO_{4} is probed using muon spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transition from a Bragg glass to a vortex glass is observed, where the latter is composed of disordered vortex lines. In the vicinity of the transition the microscopic behavior reflects a delicate interplay of thermally-induced and pinning-induced disorder.
