Using data from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey and HST/ACS imaging in the Extended Groth Strip, we select nearly 100 interacting galaxy systems including kinematic close pairs and morphologically identified merging galaxies. Spitzer MIPS 24 micron fluxes of these systems reflect the current dusty star formation activity, and at a fixed stellar mass (M_{*}) the median infrared luminosity (L_{IR}) among merging galaxies and close pairs of blue galaxies is twice (1.9 +/- 0.4) that of control pairs drawn from isolated blue galaxies. Enhancement declines with galaxy separation, being strongest in close pairs and mergers and weaker in wide pairs compared to the control sample. At z ~ 0.9, 7.1% +/- 4.3% of massive interacting galaxies (M_{*} > 2*10^{10} M_{solar}) are found to be ULIRGs, compared to 2.6% +/- 0.7% in the control sample. The large spread of IR luminosity to stellar mass ratio among interacting galaxies suggests that this enhancement may depend on the merger stage as well as other as yet unidentified factors (e.g., galaxy structure, mass ratio, orbital characteristics, presence of AGN or bar). The contribution of interacting systems to the total IR luminosity density is moderate (<= 36 %).

The infrared (IR) emission of M_* galaxies (10^{10.4} < M_{star} < 10^{11.0} M_sun) in galaxy pairs, derived using data obtained in Herschel (PEP/HerMES) and Spitzer (S-COSMOS) surveys, is compared to that of single disk galaxies in well matched cont rol samples to study the cosmic evolution of the star-formation enhancement induced by galaxy-galaxy interaction. Both the mean IR SED and mean IR luminosity of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in SFG+SFG (S+S) pairs in the redshift bin of 0.6 < z < 1 are consistent with no star-formation enhancement. SFGs in S+S pairs in a lower redshift bin of 0.2 < z < 0.6 show marginal evidence for a weak star-formation enhancement. Together with the significant and strong sSFR enhancement shown by SFGs in a local sample of S+S pairs (obtained using previously published Spitzer observations), our results reveal a trend for the star-formation enhancement in S+S pairs to decrease with increasing redshift. Between z=0 and z=1, this decline of interaction-induced star-formation enhancement occurs in parallel with the dramatic increase (by a factor of ~10) of the sSFR of single SFGs, both can be explained by the higher gas fraction in higher z disks. SFGs in mixed pairs (S+E pairs) do not show any significant star-formation enhancement at any redshift. The difference between SFGs in S+S pairs and in S+E pairs suggests a modulation of the sSFR by the inter-galactic medium IGM in the dark matter halos (DMH) hosting these pairs.
We present an investigation of the dust-enshrouded activity in a sample of X-ray selected clusters drawn from the XMM-LSS survey in the redshift range z ~ 0.05 - 1.05. By taking advantage of the contiguous mid-IR coverage of the XMM-LSS field by the Spitzer SWIRE legacy survey, we examined the distribution and number density of mid-IR bright sources out to the cluster periphery and its dependence on redshift to probe the obscured side of the Butcher-Oemler effect. Toward intermediate redshift clusters we identified surprisingly high numbers of bright 24um sources, whose photometric redshifts are compatible with cluster membership. The stacked surface density profile of 24um sources in clusters within four redshift bins gives evidence for an excess of bright mid-IR sources at redshift z $geq$ 0.4 at cluster-centric radii ~ 200 - 500 kpc. Some traces of excess appear to be present at larger radii as well.
We review recent evidence for a clear association between accretion onto supermassive black holes and star formation up to z~1 in the zCOSMOS survey. Star formation rates (SFRs) are determined from the [OII] emission-line strength and a correction fo r the AGN contribution. We find that SFRs of X-ray selected AGN span a distribution of 1-100 solar masses per year and evolve in a manner that is indistinguishable from that of massive, star-forming galaxies. The close relationship between AGN activity and star formation is further supported by an increase in the AGN fraction with bluer rest-frame colors (U-V); we further illustrate how the location of AGNs in a color-magnitude diagram can be misleading in luminosity-limited samples due to the dependence of AGN activity on the stellar mass and the low mass-to-light ratios of blue cloud galaxies. To conclude, our results support a co-evolutionary scenario up to z~1 based on the constancy with redshift of the ratio between mass accretion rate and SFR.
We analyze new optical spectra of a sample of 502 galaxies in close pairs and n-tuples, separated by <= 50/h kpc. We extracted the sample objectively from the CfA2 redshift survey, without regard to the surroundings of the tight systems. We probe the relationship between star formation and the dynamics of the systems of galaxies. The equivalent widths of Halpha (EW(Halpha) and other emission lines anti-correlate strongly with pair spatial separation (Delta D) and velocity separation. We use the measured EW(Halpha) and the starburst models of Leitherer et al. to estimate the time since the most recent burst of star for- mation began for each galaxy. In the absence of a large contribution from an old stellar population to the continuum around Halpha, the observed Delta D -- EW(Halpha) correlation signifies that starbursts with larger separations on the sky are, on average, older. By matching the dynamical timescale to the burst timescale, we show that the data support a simple picture in which a close pass initiates a starburst; EW(Halpha) decreases with time as the pair separation increases, accounting for the anti-correlation. This picture leads to a method for measuring the duration and the initial mass function of interaction-induced starbursts: our data are compatible with the starburst and orbit models in many respects, as long as the starburst lasts longer than sim10^8 years and the delay between the close pass and the initiation of the starburst is less than a few times 10^7 years. If there is no large contribution from an old stellar population to the continuum around Halpha the Miller-Scalo and cutoff (M <= 30 M_sun) Salpeter initial mass functions fit the data much better than a standard Salpeter IMF. We present a study of the influence of galaxy mergers on star formation at 0.3<z<2.5. Major mergers are selected from the CANDELS/3D-HST catalog using a peak-finding algorithm. Mergers have projected galaxy nuclei separation of their members between 3-15 kpc. We compare the star formation activity in merging and non-merging galaxies and find no significant differences. We find that only 12% of the galaxies in major mergers (in which both galaxies have log(M/Msun)>10) are star-bursting (i.e., with SFR above the main sequence of star-forming galaxies by >0.5 dex). Merging galaxies which include galaxies with lower masses show a higher fraction of star-bursting galaxies (20%). The low fraction of star-bursting merging galaxies in this sample suggests that at galaxy nuclei separations of 3-15 kpc merging galaxies are still in a early stage and are yet to reach the maximum level of star formation activity. Furthermore, the level of star formation enhancement and its duration could be arguably reduced compared to local mergers, as shown by simulations of high-z mergers, and might also depend on the physical properties (such as stellar mass and gas fraction) of the merging galaxies. Finally, we compare the specific SFR between merging galaxies. Our results suggest that, as the mass of the merging galaxies increases, the star formation activity in the less massive member in the merger suffers a more dramatic impact than its companion galaxy.
