Self-generated gradients have atttracted a lot of attention in the recent biological literature. It is considered as a robust strategy for a group of cells to find its way during a long journey. This note is intended to discuss various scenarios for modeling traveling waves of cells that constantly deplete a chemical cue, and so create their own signaling gradient all along the way. We begin with one famous model by Keller and Segel for bacterial chemotaxis. We present the model and the construction of the traveling wave solutions. We also discuss the limitation of this approach, and review some subsequent work addressing stability issues. Next, we review two relevant extensions, which are supported by biological experiments. They both admit traveling wave solutions with an explicit value for the wave speed. We conclude by discussing some open problems and perspectives, and particularly a striking mechanism of speed determinacy occurring at the back of the wave. All the results presented in this note are illustrated by numerical simulations.

We provide a new proof of convergence to motion by mean curvature (MMC) for the Merriman-Bence-Osher (MBO) thresholding algorithm. The proof is elementary and does not rely on maximum principle for the scheme. The strategy is to construct a natural a nsatz of the solution and then estimate the error. The proof thus also provides a convergence rate. Only some weak integrability assumptions of the heat kernel, but not its positivity, is used. Currently the result is proved in the case when smooth and classical solution of MMC exists.

In this paper, we begin by reviewing a certain number of mathematical challenges posed by the modelling of collective dynamics and self-organization. Then, we focus on two specific problems, first, the derivation of fluid equations from particle dyna mics of collective motion and second, the study of phase transitions and the stability of the associated equilibria.

We propose a dynamic model for a system consisting of self-propelled agents in which the influence of an agent on another agent is weighted by geographical distance. A parameter $alpha$ is introduced to adjust the influence: the smaller value of $alp ha$ means that the closer neighbors have stronger influence on the moving direction. We find that there exists an optimal value of $alpha$, leading to the highest degree of direction consensus. The value of optimal $alpha$ increases as the system size increases, while it decreases as the absolute velocity, the sensing radius and the noise amplitude increase.
We study a mathematical model describing the dynamics of a pluripotent stem cell population involved in the blood production process in the bone marrow. This model is a differential equation with a time delay. The delay describes the cell cycle durat ion and is uniformly distributed on an interval. We obtain stability conditions independent of the delay. We also show that the distributed delay can destabilize the entire system. In particularly, it is shown that Hopf bifurcations can occur.
This paper is concerned with a family of Reaction-Diffusion systems that we introduced in [15], and that generalizes the SIR type models from epidemiology. Such systems are now also used to describe collective behaviors. In this paper, we propose a mo deling approach for these apparently diverse phenomena through the example of the dynamics of social unrest. The model involves two quantities: the level of social unrest, or more generally activity, u, and a field of social tension v, which play asymmetric roles. We think of u as the actually observed or explicit quantity while v is an ambiant, sometimes implicit, field of susceptibility that modulates the dynamics of u. In this article, we explore this class of model and prove several theoretical results based on the framework developed in [15], of which the present work is a companion paper. We particularly emphasize here two subclasses of systems: tension inhibiting and tension enhancing. These are characterized by respectively a negative or a positivefeedback of the unrest on social tension. We establish several properties for these classes and also study some extensions. In particular, we describe the behavior of the system following an initial surge of activity. We show that the model can give rise to many diverse qualitative dynamics. We also provide a variety of numerical simulations to illustrate our results and to reveal further properties and open questions.
