Optical coordinate transformation (OCT) has attracted widespread attention in the field of orbital angular momentum (OAM) (de)multiplexing or manipulation, but the performance of OCT would suffer from its distortion. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the distortion of OCT from the perspective of ray optics, and explain its rationality to work under non-normal incident light. For the special case of log-polar coordinate transformation (LPCT), we use a raytracing assisted optimization scheme to improve its distortion, which is related to a Zernike polynomial based phase compensation. After raytracing optimization, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the focused rays is reduced to 1/5 of the original value and the physical optic simulation also shows great improvement. In the experiment, we use three phase masks which are realized by metasurfaces, the measured results show well consistency with the simulation. Results in this paper have great potential to improve the performance of OCT related applications.

This article investigates the stability of laser sail-style spacecraft constructed from dielectric metasurfaces with areal densities $<$1g/m$^2$. We show that the microscopic optical forces exerted on a metasurface by a high power laser (100 GW) can be engineered to achieve passive self-stabilization, such that it is optically trapped inside the drive beam, and self-corrects against angular and lateral perturbations. The metasurfaces we study consist of a patchwork of beam-steering elements that reflect light at different angles and efficiencies. These properties are varied for each element across the area of the metasurface, and we use optical force modeling tools to explore the behavior of several metasurfaces with different scattering properties as they interact with beams that have different intensity profiles. Finally, we use full-wave numerical simulation tools to extract the actual optical forces that would be imparted on Si/SiO$_{2}$ metasurfaces consisting of more than 400 elements, and we compare those results to our analytical models. We find that under first-order approximations, there are certain metasurface designs that can propel laser-sail-type spacecraft in a stable manner.
The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has recently attracted a growing interest as a new degree of freedom in order to increase the information capacity of today optical networks both for free-space and optical fiber transmission. Here we prese nt our work of design, fabrication and optical characterization of diffractive optical elements for compact OAM-mode division demultiplexing based on optical transformations. Samples have been fabricated with 3D high-resolution electron beam lithography on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resist layer spun over a glass substrate. Their high compactness and efficiency make these optical devices promising for integration into next-generation platforms for OAM-modes processing in telecom applications.
We present a novel family of paraxial optical beams having a confluent hypergeometric transverse profile, which we name hypergeometric Gauss modes of type-II (HyGG-II). These modes are eigenmodes of the photon orbital angular momentum and they have t he lowest beam divergence at waist of HyGG-II among all known finite power families of paraxial modes. We propose to exploit this feature of HyGG-II modes for generating, after suitable focusing, a light needle having record properties in terms of size and aspect ratio, possibly useful for near-field optics applications.

We introduce an approach to the design of three-dimensional transformation optical (TO) media based on a generalized quasi-conformal mapping approach. The generalized quasi-conformal TO (QCTO) approach enables the design of media that can, in princip le, be broadband and low-loss, while controlling the propagation of waves with arbitrary angles of incidence and polarization. We illustrate the method in the design of a three-dimensional carpet ground plane cloak and of a flattened Luneburg lens. Ray-trace studies provide a confirmation of the performance of the QCTO media, while also revealing the limited performance of index-on
All-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of nanostructured high-refractive-index materials, typically Si, are re-writing what is achievable in terms of the manipulation of light. Such devices support very strong magnetic, as well as electric, resonances, and are free of ohmic losses that severely limit the performance of their plasmonic counterparts. However, the functionality of dielectric-based metasurfaces is fixed-by-design, i.e. the optical response is fixed by the size, arrangement and index of the nanoresonators. A far wider range of applications could be addressed if active/reconfigurable control were possible. We demonstrate this here, via a new hybrid metasurface concept in which active control is achieved by embedding deeply sub-wavelength inclusions of a tuneable chalcogenide phase-change material within the body of high-index Si nanocylinders. Moreover, by strategic placement of the phase-change layer, and switching of its phase-state, we show selective and active control of metasuface resonances. This yields novel functionality, which we showcase via a dual- to mono-band meta-switch operating simultaneously in the O and C telecommunication bands.
