Reducing the shortage of organ donations to meet the demands of patients on the waiting list has being a major challenge in organ transplantation. Because of the shortage, organ matching decision is the most critical decision to assign the limited viable organs to the most suitable patients. Currently, organ matching decisions were only made by matching scores calculated via scoring models, which are built by the first principles. However, these models may disagree with the actual post-transplantation matching performance (e.g., patients post-transplant quality of life (QoL) or graft failure measurements). In this paper, we formulate the organ matching decision-making as a top-N recommendation problem and propose an Adaptively Weighted Top-N Recommendation (AWTR) method. AWTR improves performance of the current scoring models by using limited actual matching performance in historical data set as well as the collected covariates from organ donors and patients. AWTR sacrifices the overall recommendation accuracy by emphasizing the recommendation and ranking accuracy for top-N matched patients. The proposed method is validated in a simulation study, where KAS [60] is used to simulate the organ-patient recommendation response. The results show that our proposed method outperforms seven state-of-the-art top-N recommendation benchmark methods.

Knowledge distillation (KD) is a well-known method to reduce inference latency by compressing a cumbersome teacher model to a small student model. Despite the success of KD in the classification task, applying KD to recommender models is challenging due to the sparsity of positive feedback, the ambiguity of missing feedback, and the ranking problem associated with the top-N recommendation. To address the issues, we propose a new KD model for the collaborative filtering approach, namely collaborative distillation (CD). Specifically, (1) we reformulate a loss function to deal with the ambiguity of missing feedback. (2) We exploit probabilistic rank-aware sampling for the top-N recommendation. (3) To train the proposed model effectively, we develop two training strategies for the student model, called the teacher- and the student-guided training methods, selecting the most useful feedback from the teacher model. Via experimental results, we demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 2.7-33.2% and 2.7-29.1% in hit rate (HR) and normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG), respectively. Moreover, the proposed model achieves the performance comparable to the teacher model.
We develop a new robust geographically weighted regression method in the presence of outliers. We embed the standard geographically weighted regression in robust objective function based on $gamma$-divergence. A novel feature of the proposed approach is that two tuning parameters that control robustness and spatial smoothness are automatically tuned in a data-dependent manner. Further, the proposed method can produce robust standard error estimates of the robust estimator and give us a reasonable quantity for local outlier detection. We demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the existing robust version of geographically weighted regression through simulation and data analysis.
Due to the flexibility in modelling data heterogeneity, heterogeneous information network (HIN) has been adopted to characterize complex and heterogeneous auxiliary data in top-$N$ recommender systems, called emph{HIN-based recommendation}. HIN chara cterizes complex, heterogeneous data relations, containing a variety of information that may not be related to the recommendation task. Therefore, it is challenging to effectively leverage useful information from HINs for improving the recommendation performance. To address the above issue, we propose a Curriculum pre-training based HEterogeneous Subgraph Transformer (called emph{CHEST}) with new emph{data characterization}, emph{representation model} and emph{learning algorithm}. Specifically, we consider extracting useful information from HIN to compose the interaction-specific heterogeneous subgraph, containing both sufficient and relevant context information for recommendation. Then we capture the rich semantics (eg graph structure and path semantics) within the subgraph via a heterogeneous subgraph Transformer, where we encode the subgraph with multi-slot sequence representations. Besides, we design a curriculum pre-training strategy to provide an elementary-to-advanced learning process, by which we smoothly transfer basic semantics in HIN for modeling user-item interaction relation. Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over a number of competitive baselines, especially when only limited training data is available.
Large-scale collaborative analysis of brain imaging data, in psychiatry and neu-rology, offers a new source of statistical power to discover features that boost ac-curacy in disease classification, differential diagnosis, and outcome prediction. Howe ver, due to data privacy regulations or limited accessibility to large datasets across the world, it is challenging to efficiently integrate distributed information. Here we propose a novel classification framework through multi-site weighted LASSO: each site performs an iterative weighted LASSO for feature selection separately. Within each iteration, the classification result and the selected features are collected to update the weighting parameters for each feature. This new weight is used to guide the LASSO process at the next iteration. Only the fea-tures that help to improve the classification accuracy are preserved. In tests on da-ta from five sites (299 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 258 normal controls), our method boosted classification accuracy for MDD by 4.9% on average. This result shows the potential of the proposed new strategy as an ef-fective and practical collaborative platform for machine learning on large scale distributed imaging and biobank data.
Modern E-commerce websites contain heterogeneous sources of information, such as numerical ratings, textual reviews and images. These information can be utilized to assist recommendation. Through textual reviews, a user explicitly express her affinit y towards the item. Previous researchers found that by using the information extracted from these reviews, we can better profile the users explicit preferences as well as the item features, leading to the improvement of recommendation performance. However, most of the previous algorithms were only utilizing the review information for explicit-feedback problem i.e. rating prediction, and when it comes to implicit-feedback ranking problem such as top-N recommendation, the usage of review information has not been fully explored. Seeing this gap, in this work, we investigate the effectiveness of textual review information for top-N recommendation under E-commerce settings. We adapt several SOTA review-based rating prediction models for top-N recommendation tasks and compare them to existing top-N recommendation models from both performance and efficiency. We find that models utilizing only review information can not achieve better performances than vanilla implicit-feedback matrix factorization method. When utilizing review information as a regularizer or auxiliary information, the performance of implicit-feedback matrix factorization method can be further improved. However, the optimal model structure to utilize textual reviews for E-commerce top-N recommendation is yet to be determined.
