Cooperative beamforming across access points (APs) and fronthaul quantization strategies are essential for cloud radio access network (C-RAN) systems. The nonconvexity of the C-RAN optimization problems, which is stemmed from per-AP power and fronthaul capacity constraints, requires high computational complexity for executing iterative algorithms. To resolve this issue, we investigate a deep learning approach where the optimization module is replaced with a well-trained deep neural network (DNN). An efficient learning solution is proposed which constructs a DNN to produce a low-dimensional representation of optimal beamforming and quantization strategies. Numerical results validate the advantages of the proposed learning solution.

This letter studies a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) deployed between users and remote radio heads (RRH). Specifically, we consider the uplink transmission where each RRH quantizes the received signals from the users by either point-to-point compression or Wyner-Ziv compression and then transmits the quantization bits to the BBU pool through capacity limited fronthhual links. To maximize the uplink sum rate, we jointly optimize the passive beamformers of IRSs and the quantization noise covariance matrices of fronthoul compression. An joint fronthaul compression and passive beamforming design is proposed by exploiting the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm and semidefinte relaxation (SDR). Numerical results show the performance gain achieved by the proposed algorithm.
A multistatic radar set-up is considered in which distributed receive antennas are connected to a Fusion Center (FC) via limited-capacity backhaul links. Similar to cloud radio access networks in communications, the receive antennas quantize the rece ived baseband signal before transmitting it to the FC. The problem of maximizing the detection performance at the FC jointly over the code vector used by the transmitting antenna and over the statistics of the noise introduced by backhaul quantization is investigated. Specifically, adopting the information-theoretic criterion of the Bhattacharyya distance to evaluate the detection performance at the FC and information-theoretic measures of the quantization rate, the problem at hand is addressed via a Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) method coupled with Majorization-Minimization (MM). Numerical results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed joint optimization approach over more conventional solutions that perform separate optimization.
In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), the baseband units and radio units of base stations are separated, which requires high-capacity fronthaul links connecting both parts. In this paper, we consider the delay-aware fronthaul allocation problem fo r C-RANs. The stochastic optimization problem is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process. To deal with the curse of dimensionality, we derive a closed-form approximate priority function and the associated error bound using perturbation analysis. Based on the closed-form approximate priority function, we propose a low-complexity delay-aware fronthaul allocation algorithm solving the per-stage optimization problem. The proposed solution is further shown to be asymptotically optimal for sufficiently small cross link path gains. Finally, the proposed fronthaul allocation algorithm is compared with various baselines through simulations, and it is shown that significant performance gain can be achieved.
In this paper, we consider a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system that improves the hardware efficiency by dynamically selecting the antenna subarray and utilizing 1-bit phase shifters for hybrid beamforming. To maximize the spectral efficiency, we propose a novel deep unsupervised learning-based approach that avoids the computationally prohibitive process of acquiring training labels. The proposed design has its input as the channel matrix and consists of two convolutional neural networks (CNNs). To enable unsupervised training, the problem constraints are embedded in the neural networks: the first CNN adopts deep probabilistic sampling, while the second CNN features a quantization layer designed for 1-bit phase shifters. The two networks can be trained jointly without labels by sharing an unsupervised loss function. We next propose a phased training approach to promote the convergence of the proposed networks. Simulation results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach over conventional optimization-based algorithms in terms of both achieved rate and computational complexity.

The fundamental intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) deployment problem is investigated for IRS-assisted networks, where one IRS is arranged to be deployed in a specific region for assisting the communication between an access point (AP) and multiple users. Specifically, three multiple access schemes are considered, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA). The weighted sum rate maximization problem for joint optimization of the deployment location and the reflection coefficients of the IRS as well as the power allocation at the AP is formulated. The non-convex optimization problems obtained for NOMA and FDMA are solved by employing monotonic optimization and semidefinite relaxation to find a performance upper bound. The problem obtained for TDMA is optimally solved by leveraging the time-selective nature of the IRS. Furthermore, for all three multiple access schemes, low-complexity suboptimal algorithms are developed by exploiting alternating optimization and successive convex approximation techniques, where a local region optimization method is applied for optimizing the IRS deployment location. Numerical results are provided to show that: 1) near-optimal performance can be achieved by the proposed suboptimal algorithms; 2) asymmetric and symmetric IRS deployment strategies are preferable for NOMA and FDMA/TDMA, respectively; 3) the performance gain achieved with IRS can be significantly improved by optimizing the deployment location.
