Non-parametric face modeling aims to reconstruct 3D face only from images without shape assumptions. While plausible facial details are predicted, the models tend to over-depend on local color appearance and suffer from ambiguous noise. To address such problem, this paper presents a novel Learning to Aggregate and Personalize (LAP) framework for unsupervised robust 3D face modeling. Instead of using controlled environment, the proposed method implicitly disentangles ID-consistent and scene-specific face from unconstrained photo set. Specifically, to learn ID-consistent face, LAP adaptively aggregates intrinsic face factors of an identity based on a novel curriculum learning approach with relaxed consistency loss. To adapt the face for a personalized scene, we propose a novel attribute-refining network to modify ID-consistent face with target attribute and details. Based on the proposed method, we make unsupervised 3D face modeling benefit from meaningful image facial structure and possibly higher resolutions. Extensive experiments on benchmarks show LAP recovers superior or competitive face shape and texture, compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods with or without prior and supervision.

We present a novel method to jointly learn a 3D face parametric model and 3D face reconstruction from diverse sources. Previous methods usually learn 3D face modeling from one kind of source, such as scanned data or in-the-wild images. Although 3D sc anned data contain accurate geometric information of face shapes, the capture system is expensive and such datasets usually contain a small number of subjects. On the other hand, in-the-wild face images are easily obtained and there are a large number of facial images. However, facial images do not contain explicit geometric information. In this paper, we propose a method to learn a unified face model from diverse sources. Besides scanned face data and face images, we also utilize a large number of RGB-D images captured with an iPhone X to bridge the gap between the two sources. Experimental results demonstrate that with training data from more sources, we can learn a more powerful face model.
We present a learning-based method for synthesizing novel views of complex scenes using only unstructured collections of in-the-wild photographs. We build on Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), which uses the weights of a multilayer perceptron to model th e density and color of a scene as a function of 3D coordinates. While NeRF works well on images of static subjects captured under controlled settings, it is incapable of modeling many ubiquitous, real-world phenomena in uncontrolled images, such as variable illumination or transient occluders. We introduce a series of extensions to NeRF to address these issues, thereby enabling accurate reconstructions from unstructured image collections taken from the internet. We apply our system, dubbed NeRF-W, to internet photo collections of famous landmarks, and demonstrate temporally consistent novel view renderings that are significantly closer to photorealism than the prior state of the art.
3D face reconstruction from a single 2D image is a challenging problem with broad applications. Recent methods typically aim to learn a CNN-based 3D face model that regresses coefficients of 3D Morphable Model (3DMM) from 2D images to render 3D face reconstruction or dense face alignment. However, the shortage of training data with 3D annotations considerably limits performance of those methods. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel 2D-assisted self-supervised learning (2DASL) method that can effectively use in-the-wild 2D face images with noisy landmark information to substantially improve 3D face model learning. Specifically, taking the sparse 2D facial landmarks as additional information, 2DSAL introduces four novel self-supervision schemes that view the 2D landmark and 3D landmark prediction as a self-mapping process, including the 2D and 3D landmark self-prediction consistency, cycle-consistency over the 2D landmark prediction and self-critic over the predicted 3DMM coefficients based on landmark predictions. Using these four self-supervision schemes, the 2DASL method significantly relieves demands on the the conventional paired 2D-to-3D annotations and gives much higher-quality 3D face models without requiring any additional 3D annotations. Experiments on multiple challenging datasets show that our method outperforms state-of-the-arts for both 3D face reconstruction and dense face alignment by a large margin.
Over the last years, with the advent of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), many face analysis tasks have accomplished astounding performance, with applications including, but not limited to, face generation and 3D face reconstruction from a sing le in-the-wild image. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there is no method which can produce high-resolution photorealistic 3D faces from in-the-wild images and this can be attributed to the: (a) scarcity of available data for training, and (b) lack of robust methodologies that can successfully be applied on very high-resolution data. In this paper, we introduce AvatarMe, the first method that is able to reconstruct photorealistic 3D faces from a single in-the-wild image with an increasing level of detail. To achieve this, we capture a large dataset of facial shape and reflectance and build on a state-of-the-art 3D texture and shape reconstruction method and successively refine its results, while generating the per-pixel diffuse and specular components that are required for realistic rendering. As we demonstrate in a series of qualitative and quantitative experiments, AvatarMe outperforms the existing arts by a significant margin and reconstructs authentic, 4K by 6K-resolution 3D faces from a single low-resolution image that, for the first time, bridges the uncanny valley.
This paper investigates the evaluation of dense 3D face reconstruction from a single 2D image in the wild. To this end, we organise a competition that provides a new benchmark dataset that contains 2000 2D facial images of 135 subjects as well as the ir 3D ground truth face scans. In contrast to previous competitions or challenges, the aim of this new benchmark dataset is to evaluate the accuracy of a 3D dense face reconstruction algorithm using real, accurate and high-resolution 3D ground truth face scans. In addition to the dataset, we provide a standard protocol as well as a Python script for the evaluation. Last, we report the results obtained by three state-of-the-art 3D face reconstruction systems on the new benchmark dataset. The competition is organised along with the 2018 13th IEEE Conference on Automatic Face & Gesture Recognition.
