Among the transparent conducting oxides, the perovskite barium stannate is most promising for various electronic applications due to its outstanding carrier mobility achieved at room temperature. Most important characteristics however, $i.e.$, its band gap, effective masses, and absorption edge remain controversial. Here, we provide a fully consistent picture by combining state-of-the-art $ab~initio$ methodology with forefront electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and optical absorption measurements. On- and off-axis valence EELS spectra, featuring signals originating from band gap transitions, are acquired on defect-free sample regions of a BaSnO$_{3}$ single crystal. These high-energy-resolution measurements are able to capture also very weak excitations below the optical gap, attributed to indirect transitions. By temperature-dependent optical absorption measurements, we assess band-gap renormalization effects induced by electron-phonon coupling. Overall, we find for the effective electronic mass, the direct and the indirect gap, the optical gap as well as the absorption onsets and spectra excellent agreement between both experimental techniques and the theoretical many-body results, supporting also the picture of a phonon-mediated mechanism where indirect transitions are activated by phonon-induced symmetry lowering. This work demonstrates a fruitful connection between different high-level theoretical and experimental methods for exploring the characteristics of advanced materials.

Epitaxial perovskite oxide interfaces with different symmetry of the epitaxial layers have attracted considerable attention due to the emergence of novel behaviors and phenomena. In this paper, we show by aberration corrected transmission electron mi croscopy that orthorhombic $text{LaInO}_text{3}$ films grow in form of three different types of domains on the cubic $text{BaSnO}_text{3}$ pseudosubstrate. Quantitative evaluation of our TEM data shows that $c_{pc}$-oriented and $a_{pc}/b_{pc}$-oriented domains are present with similar probability. While continuum elasticity theory suggests that $c_{pc}$-oriented domains should exhibit a significantly higher strain energy density than $a_{pc}/b_{pc}$-oriented domains, density functional calculations confirm that $c_{pc}$- and $a_{pc}$-oriented domains on $text{BaSnO}_text{3}$ have similar energies.
In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to investigate many physical science phenomena, ranging from phase transitions, chemical reaction and crystal growth to grain boundary dynamics. A major limitat ion of in-situ XRD and TEM is a compromise that has to be made between spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we report the development of in-situ X-ray nanodiffraction to measure atomic-resolution diffraction patterns from single grains with up to 5 millisecond temporal resolution, and make the first real-time observation of grain rotation and lattice deformation during photoinduced chemical reactions. The grain rotation and lattice deformation associated with the chemical reactions are quantified to be as fast as 3.25 rad./sec. and as large as 0.5 Angstroms, respectively. The ability to measure atomic-resolution diffraction patterns from individual grains with several millisecond temporal resolution is expected to find broad applications in materials science, physics, chemistry, and nanoscience.
Cubic perovskite oxides are emerging high-mobility transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), but Ge-based TCOs had not been known until the discovery of metastable cubic SrGeO$_3$. $0.5 times 0.4 times 0.2$-mm$^3$ large single crystals of the cubic SrGeO $_3$ perovskite were successfully synthesized employing the high-pressure flux method. The phonon spectrum is determined from the IR optical reflectance and Raman-scattering analysis to evaluate the electron transport governed by optical phonon scattering. A calculated room-temperature mobility on the order of $3.9 times 10^2$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ is obtained, identifying cubic SrGeO$_3$ as one of the most promising TCOs. Employing classical phonon theory and a combined experimental-theoretical approach, a comprehensive analysis of the intrinsic electron mobility in the cubic perovskite semiconductors SrGeO$_3$, BaSnO$_3$, and SrTiO$_3$ is provided based on the magnitude of polarization and eigenfrequency of optically active phonons.
The electronic structure in the new transition metal carbide Ti4SiC3 has been investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy and compared to the well-studied Ti3SiC2 and TiC systems. The measured high-resolution Ti L, C K and Si L x- ray emission spectra are discussed with ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory including core-to-valence dipole matrix elements. The detailed investigations of the Ti-C and Ti-Si chemical bonds provide increased understanding of the physical properties of these nanolaminates. A strongly modified spectral shape is detected for the buried Si monolayers due to Si 3p hybridization with the Ti 3d orbitals. As a result of relaxation of the crystal structure and the charge-transfer from Ti (and Si) to C, the strength of the Ti-C covalent bond is increased. The differences between the electronic and crystal structures of Ti4SiC3 and Ti3SiC2 are discussed in relation to the number of Si layers per Ti layer in the two systems and the corresponding change of materials properties.
Machine learning driven interatomic potentials, including Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) models, are emerging tools for atomistic simulations. Here, we address the methodological question of how one can fit GAP models that accurately predict vibrational properties in specific regions of configuration space, whilst retaining flexibility and transferability to others. We use an adaptive regularization of the GAP fit that scales with the absolute force magnitude on any given atom, thereby exploring the Bayesian interpretation of GAP regularization as an expected error, and its impact on the prediction of physical properties for a material of interest. The approach enables excellent predictions of phonon modes (to within 0.1-0.2 THz) for structurally diverse silicon allotropes, and it can be coupled with existing fitting databases for high transferability. These findings and workflows are expected to be useful for GAP-driven materials modeling more generally.
