We present HARE, a new task where reader feedback is used to optimize document summaries for personal interest during the normal flow of reading. This task is related to interactive summarization, where personalized summaries are produced following a long feedback stage where users may read the same sentences many times. However, this process severely interrupts the flow of reading, making it impractical for leisurely reading. We propose to gather minimally-invasive feedback during the reading process to adapt to user interests and augment the document in real-time. Building off of recent advances in unsupervised summarization evaluation, we propose a suitable metric for this task and use it to evaluate a variety of approaches. Our approaches range from simple heuristics to preference-learning and their analysis provides insight into this important task. Human evaluation additionally supports the practicality of HARE. Automatic machine translation is super efficient to produce translations yet their quality is not guaranteed. This technique report introduces TranSmart, a practical human-machine interactive translation system that is able to trade off translation q uality and efficiency. Compared to existing publicly available interactive translation systems, TranSmart supports three key features, word-level autocompletion, sentence-level autocompletion and translation memory. By word-level and sentence-level autocompletion, TranSmart allows users to interactively translate words in their own manners rather than the strict manner from left to right. In addition, TranSmart has the potential to avoid similar translation mistakes by using translated sentences in history as its memory. This report presents major functions of TranSmart, algorithms for achieving these functions, how to use the TranSmart APIs, and evaluation results of some key functions. TranSmart is publicly available at its homepage (https://transmart.qq.com).
State-of-the-art summarization systems are trained and evaluated on massive datasets scraped from the web. Despite their prevalence, we know very little about the underlying characteristics (data noise, summarization complexity, etc.) of these datase ts, and how these affect system performance and the reliability of automatic metrics like ROUGE. In this study, we manually analyze 600 samples from three popular summarization datasets. Our study is driven by a six-class typology which captures different noise types (missing facts, entities) and degrees of summarization difficulty (extractive, abstractive). We follow with a thorough analysis of 27 state-of-the-art summarization models and 5 popular metrics, and report our key insights: (1) Datasets have distinct data quality and complexity distributions, which can be traced back to their collection process. (2) The performance of models and reliability of metrics is dependent on sample complexity. (3) Faithful summaries often receive low scores because of the poor diversity of references. We release the code, annotated data and model outputs.
In Interactive Information Retrieval (IIR) experiments the users gaze motion on web pages is often recorded with eye tracking. The data is used to analyze gaze behavior or to identify Areas of Interest (AOI) the user has looked at. So far, tools for analyzing eye tracking data have certain limitations in supporting the analysis of gaze behavior in IIR experiments. Experiments often consist of a huge number of different visited web pages. In existing analysis tools the data can only be analyzed in videos or images and AOIs for every single web page have to be specified by hand, in a very time consuming process. In this work, we propose the reading protocol software which breaks eye tracking data down to the textual level by considering the HTML structure of the web pages. This has a lot of advantages for the analyst. First and foremost, it can easily be identified on a large scale what has actually been viewed and read on the stimuli pages by the subjects. Second, the web page structure can be used to filter to AOIs. Third, gaze data of multiple users can be presented on the same page, and fourth, fixation times on text can be exported and further processed in other tools. We present the software, its validation, and example use cases with data from three existing IIR experiments.

We study the potential for interaction in natural language classification. We add a limited form of interaction for intent classification, where users provide an initial query using natural language, and the system asks for additional information usi ng binary or multi-choice questions. At each turn, our system decides between asking the most informative question or making the final classification prediction.The simplicity of the model allows for bootstrapping of the system without interaction data, instead relying on simple crowdsourcing tasks. We evaluate our approach on two domains, showing the benefit of interaction and the advantage of learning to balance between asking additional questions and making the final prediction.
Goal-oriented conversational agents are becoming prevalent in our daily lives. For these systems to engage users and achieve their goals, they need to exhibit appropriate social behavior as well as provide informative replies that guide users through tasks. The first component of the research in this paper applies statistical modeling techniques to understand conversations between users and human agents for customer service. Analyses show that social language used by human agents is associated with greater users responsiveness and task completion. The second component of the research is the construction of a conversational agent model capable of injecting social language into an agents responses while still preserving content. The model uses a sequence-to-sequence deep learning architecture, extended with a social language understanding element. Evaluation in terms of content preservation and social language level using both human judgment and automatic linguistic measures shows that the model can generate responses that enable agents to address users issues in a more socially appropriate way.
