Case-hindering, multi-year digital forensic evidence backlogs have become commonplace in law enforcement agencies throughout the world. This is due to an ever-growing number of cases requiring digital forensic investigation coupled with the growing volume of data to be processed per case. Leveraging previously processed digital forensic cases and their component artefact relevancy classifications can facilitate an opportunity for training automated artificial intelligence based evidence processing systems. These can significantly aid investigators in the discovery and prioritisation of evidence. This paper presents one approach for file artefact relevancy determination building on the growing trend towards a centralised, Digital Forensics as a Service (DFaaS) paradigm. This approach enables the use of previously encountered pertinent files to classify newly discovered files in an investigation. Trained models can aid in the detection of these files during the acquisition stage, i.e., during their upload to a DFaaS system. The technique generates a relevancy score for file similarity using each artefacts filesystem metadata and associated timeline events. The approach presented is validated against three experimental usage scenarios.

The ever increasing volume of data in digital forensic investigation is one of the most discussed challenges in the field. Usually, most of the file artefacts on seized devices are not pertinent to the investigation. Manually retrieving suspicious fi les relevant to the investigation is akin to finding a needle in a haystack. In this paper, a methodology for the automatic prioritisation of suspicious file artefacts (i.e., file artefacts that are pertinent to the investigation) is proposed to reduce the manual analysis effort required. This methodology is designed to work in a human-in-the-loop fashion. In other words, it predicts/recommends that an artefact is likely to be suspicious rather than giving the final analysis result. A supervised machine learning approach is employed, which leverages the recorded results of previously processed cases. The process of features extraction, dataset generation, training and evaluation are presented in this paper. In addition, a toolkit for data extraction from disk images is outlined, which enables this method to be integrated with the conventional investigation process and work in an automated fashion.
The blazar sequence is a scenario in which the bolometric luminosity of the blazar governs the appearance of its spectral energy distribution. The most prominent result is the significant negative correlation between the synchrotron peak frequencies and the synchrotron peak luminosities of the blazar population. Observational studies of the blazar sequence have, in general, neglected the effect of Doppler boosting. We study the dependence of both the synchrotron peak frequency and luminosity with Doppler-corrected quantities. We determine the spectral energy distributions of 135 radio-bright AGN and find the best-fit parabolic function for the distribution to quantify their synchrotron emission. The corresponding measurements of synchrotron peak luminosities and frequencies are Doppler-corrected with a new set of Doppler factors calculated from variability data. The relevant correlations for the blazar sequence are determined for these intrinsic quantities. The Doppler factor depends strongly on the synchrotron peak frequency, the lower energy sources being more boosted. Applying the Doppler correction to the peak frequencies and luminosities annuls the negative correlation between the two quantities, which becomes positive. For BL Lacertae objects, the positive correlation is particularly strong. The blazar sequence, when defined as the anticorrelation between the peak frequency and luminosity of the synchrotron component of the spectral energy distribution, disappears when the intrinsic, Doppler-corrected values are used. It is an observational phenomenon created by variable Doppler boosting across the synchrotron peak frequency range.
Quality assessment of medical images is essential for complete automation of image processing pipelines. For large population studies such as the UK Biobank, artefacts such as those caused by heart motion are problematic and manual identification is tedious and time-consuming. Therefore, there is an urgent need for automatic image quality assessment techniques. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically detect the presence of motion-related artefacts in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images. As this is a highly imbalanced classification problem (due to the high number of good quality images compared to the low number of images with motion artefacts), we propose a novel k-space based training data augmentation approach in order to address this problem. Our method is based on 3D spatio-temporal Convolutional Neural Networks, and is able to detect 2D+time short axis images with motion artefacts in less than 1ms. We test our algorithm on a subset of the UK Biobank dataset consisting of 3465 CMR images and achieve not only high accuracy in detection of motion artefacts, but also high precision and recall. We compare our approach to a range of state-of-the-art quality assessment methods.
Waveform physiological data is important in the treatment of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Such recordings are susceptible to artefacts, which must be removed before the data can be re-used for alerting or reprocessed for other clinical or research purposes. Accurate removal of artefacts reduces bias and uncertainty in clinical assessment, as well as the false positive rate of intensive care unit alarms, and is therefore a key component in providing optimal clinical care. In this work, we present DeepClean; a prototype self-supervised artefact detection system using a convolutional variational autoencoder deep neural network that avoids costly and painstaking manual annotation, requiring only easily-obtained good data for training. For a test case with invasive arterial blood pressure, we demonstrate that our algorithm can detect the presence of an artefact within a 10-second sample of data with sensitivity and specificity around 90%. Furthermore, DeepClean was able to identify regions of artefact within such samples with high accuracy and we show that it significantly outperforms a baseline principle component analysis approach in both signal reconstruction and artefact detection. DeepClean learns a generative model and therefore may also be used for imputation of missing data.

By producing summaries for long-running events, timeline summarization (TLS) underpins many information retrieval tasks. Successful TLS requires identifying an appropriate set of key dates (the timeline length) to cover. However, doing so is challeng ing as the right length can change from one topic to another. Existing TLS solutions either rely on an event-agnostic fixed length or an expert-supplied setting. Neither of the strategies is desired for real-life TLS scenarios. A fixed, event-agnostic setting ignores the diversity of events and their development and hence can lead to low-quality TLS. Relying on expert-crafted settings is neither scalable nor sustainable for processing many dynamically changing events. This paper presents a better TLS approach for automatically and dynamically determining the TLS timeline length. We achieve this by employing the established elbow method from the machine learning community to automatically find the minimum number of dates within the time series to generate concise and informative summaries. We applied our approach to four TLS datasets of English and Chinese and compared them against three prior methods. Experimental results show that our approach delivers comparable or even better summaries over state-of-art TLS methods, but it achieves this without expert involvement.
