Anionic ordering is a promising route to engineer physical properties in functional heteroanionic materials. A central challenge in the study of anion-ordered compounds lies in developing robust synthetic strategies to control anion occupation and in understanding the resultant implications for electronic structure. Here, we show that epitaxial strain induces preferential occupation of F and O on the anion sites in perovskite oxyfluoride SrMnO2.5-dFg films grown on different substrates. Under compressive strain, F tends to take the apical-like sites, which was revealed by F and O K-edge linearly polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, resulting in an enhanced c-axis expansion. Under tensile strain, F tends to take the equatorial-like sites, enabling the longer Mn-F bonds to lie within the plane. The anion ordered oxyfluoride films exhibit a significant orbital polarization of the 3d electrons, distinct F-site dependence to their valence band density of states, and an enhanced resistivity when F occupies the apical-like anion site compared to the equatorial-like site. By demonstrating a general strategy for inducing anion-site order in oxyfluoride perovskites, this work lays the foundation for future materials design and synthesis efforts that leverage this greater degree of atomic control to realize new polar or quasi-two-dimensional materials.

Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We pre sent a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, with the calculated structure factor. Combining ab initio density functional calculations with these experimental results, we determine systematically how strain modifies the atomic structure of this functional oxide.
Compositionally tunable vanadium oxyhydrides Sr2VO4-xHx (x = 0 - 1) without considerable anion vacancy were synthesized by high-pressure solid state reaction. The crystal structures and their properties were characterized by powder neutron diffractio n, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The hydrogen anions selectively replaced equatorial oxygen sites in the VO6 layers via statistical substitution of hydrogen in the low x region (x < 0.2). A new orthorhombic phase (Immm) with an almost entirely hydrogen-ordered structure formed from the K2NiF4-type tetragonal phase with x > 0.7. Based on the DFT calculations, the degree of oxygen/hydrogen anion ordering is strongly correlated with the bonding interaction between vanadium and the ligands.

LiOsO3 is the first experimentally confirmed polar metal. Previous works suggested that the ground state of LiOsO$_3$ is just close to the critical point of metal-insulator transition. In this work the electronic state of LiOsO$_3$ is tuned by epitax ial biaxial strain, which undergoes the Slater-type metal-insulator transition under tensile strain, i.e., the G-type antiferromagnetism emerges. The underlying mechanism of bandwidth tuning can be extended to its sister compound NaOsO$_3$, which shows an opposite transition from a antiferromagnetic insulator to a nonmagnetic metal under hydrostatic pressure. Our work suggests a feasible route for the manipulation of magnetism and conductivity of polar metal LiOsO$_3$.
Epitaxial La2NiMnO6 thin films have been grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 using the PLD technique. The thin films are semiconducting and FM with a TC close to 270K, a coercive field of 920Oe, and a saturation magnetization of 5muB per f.u. TEM, conduct ed at RT, reveals a majority phase having I-centered structure with a=c=1.4asub and b=2asub along with a minority phase-domains having P-type structure (asub being the lattice parameter of the perovskite structure). A discusion on the presence of Ni/Mn long-range ordering, in light of recent literature on double perovskites La2NiMnO6 is presented.
The interrelation between the epitaxial strain and oxygen deficiency in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3-{delta} thin films was studied in terms of structural and functional properties. The films with a thickness of 1000{AA} were prepared using a PLD system equipped w ith a RHEED facility and a pyrometric film temperature control. The epitaxial strain and the oxygen deficiency in the samples were systematically modified using three different substrates: SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 and LaSrAlO4, and four different oxygen pressures during film growth ranging from 0.27mbar to 0.1mbar. It could be demonstrated that the oxygen incorporation depends on the epitaxial strain: oxygen vacancies were induced to accommodate tensile strain whereas the compressive strain suppressed the generation of oxygen vacancies.
