Epitaxial La2NiMnO6 thin films have been grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 using the PLD technique. The thin films are semiconducting and FM with a TC close to 270K, a coercive field of 920Oe, and a saturation magnetization of 5muB per f.u. TEM, conducted at RT, reveals a majority phase having I-centered structure with a=c=1.4asub and b=2asub along with a minority phase-domains having P-type structure (asub being the lattice parameter of the perovskite structure). A discusion on the presence of Ni/Mn long-range ordering, in light of recent literature on double perovskites La2NiMnO6 is presented.

The electronic and magnetic properties of clinopyroxene CaMnGe$_2$O$_6$ were studied using density function calculations within the GGA+U approximation. It is shown that anomalous ferromagnetic ordering of neighboring chains is due to a common-enemy mechanism. Two antiferromagnetic exchange couplings between nearest neighbours within the Mn-Mn chain and interchain coupling via two GeO$_4$ tetrahedra suppress antiferromagnetic exchange via single GeO$_4$ tetrahedron and stabilize ferromagnetic ordering of Mn chains.

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a rando m distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Recent advances in tools for crystal structure analysis enabled us to describe a new phenomenon in structural chemistry, which, to this day, has remained hidden. Here we describe a crystal structure with an incommensurate compositional modulation, Mn 0.6Ni0.4As. The sample adopts the NiAs type structure, but in contrast to a normal solid solution, we observe that manganese and nickel separate into layers of MnAs and NiAs with thickness of 2-4 face-shared octahedra. Experimentally, results are obtained by combination of 3D electron diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy and neutron diffraction. The distribution of octahedral units between the manganese and nickel layers is perfectly described by a modulation vector q = 0.360(3) c*. An additional periodicity is thus present in the compound. Positional modulation is observed of all elements as a consequence of the occupational modulation.
Insulating uniaxial room-temperature ferromagnets are a prerequisite for commonplace spin wave-based devices, the obstacle in contemporary ferromagnets being the coupling of ferromagnetism with large conductivity. We show that the uniaxial $A^{1+2x}$ Ti$^{4+}$$_{1-x}$O$_3$ (ATO), $A=$Ni$^{2+}$,Co$^{2+}$ and $0.6<x leq 1$, thin films are electrically insulating ferromagnets already at room-temperature. The octahedra network of the ATO and ilmenite structures are similar yet different octahedra-filling proved to be a route to switch from the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic regime. Octahedra can continuously be filled up to $x=1$, or vacated $(-0.24<x<0)$ in the ATO structure. TiO-layers, which separate the ferromagnetic (Ni,Co)O-layers and intermediate the antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic layers in the NiTiO$_3$ and CoTiO$_3$ ilmenites, can continuously be replaced by (Ni,Co)O-layers to convert the ATO-films to ferromagnetic insulator with abundant direct cation interactions.
Room temperature ferromagnetism was observed in n-type Fe-doped In2O3 thin films deposited on c-cut sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Structure, magnetism, composition, and transport studies indicated that Fe occupied the In sites of th e In2O3 lattice rather than formed any metallic Fe or other magnetic impurity phases. Magnetic moments of films were proved to be intrinsic and showed to have a strong dependence on the carrier densities which depended on the Fe concentration and its valance state as well as oxygen pressure.
