The process of turning a proton into a neutron, positron and electron-neutrino in a strong plane-wave electromagnetic field is studied. This process is forbidden in vacuum and is seen to feature an exponential suppression factor which is non-perturbative in the field amplitude. The suppression is alleviated when the proton experiences a field strength of about ten times the Schwinger critical field in its rest frame or larger. Around this threshold the lifetime of the proton, in its rest frame, is comparable to the conventional neutron decay lifetime. As the field strength is increased, the proton lifetime becomes increasingly short. We investigate possible scenarios where this process may be observed in the laboratory using an ultra-intense laser and a high-energy proton beam with the conclusion, however, that it would be very challenging to observe this effect in the near future.

We study the impact of a finite magnetic field on the deconfinement phase transition for heavy quarks by computing the fluctuations of the Polyakov loops. It is demonstrated that the explicit Z(3) breaking field increases with the magnetic field, lea ding to a decrease in the (pseudo) critical temperatures and a shrinking first-order region in the phase diagram. Phenomenological equations that capture the behaviors of the Z(3) breaking field at strong and weak magnetic fields for massive and massless quarks are given. Lastly, we explore the case of dynamical light quarks and demonstrate how an improved constituent quark mass function can enforce the correct magnetic field dependence of the deconfinement temperature in an effective model, as observed in Lattice QCD calculations.
We have investigated the properties of quarkonia in a thermal QCD medium in the background of strong magnetic field. For that purpose, we employ the Schwinger proper-time quark propagator in the lowest Landau level to calculate the one-loop gluon sel f-energy, which in the sequel gives the the effective gluon propagator. As an artifact of strong magnetic field approximation ($eB>>T^2$ and $eB>>m^2$), the Debye mass for massless flavors is found to depend only on the magnetic field which is the dominant scale in comparison to the scales prevalent in the thermal medium. However, for physical quark masses, it depends on both magnetic field and temperature in a low temperature and high magnetic field but the temperature dependence is very meagre and becomes independent of temperature beyond a certain temperature and magnetic field. With the above mentioned ingredients, the potential between heavy quark ($Q$) and anti-quark ($bar Q$) is obtained in a hot QCD medium in the presence of strong magnetic field by correcting both short and long range components of the potential in real-time formalism. It is found that the long range part of the quarkonium potential is affected much more by magnetic field as compared to the short range part. This observation facilitates us to estimate the magnetic field beyond which the potential will be too weak to bind $Qbar Q$ together. For example, the $J/psi$ is dissociated at $eB sim$ 10 $m_pi^2$ and $Upsilon$ is dissociated at $eB sim$ 100 $m_pi^2$ whereas its excited states, $psi^prime$ and $Upsilon^prime$ are dissociated at smaller magnetic field $eB= m_pi^2$, $13 m_pi^2$, respectively.
The management of long-lived radionuclides in spent fuel is a key issue to achieve the closed nuclear fuel cycle and the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Partitioning-Transmutation is supposed to be an efficient method to treat the long-liv ed radionuclides in spent fuel. Some Minor Actinides (MAs) have very long half-lives among the radionuclides in the spent fuel. Accordingly, the study of MAs transmutation is a significant work for the post-processing of spent fuel. In the present work, the transmutations in Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) mixed oxide (MOX) fuel are investigated through the Monte Carlo based code RMC. Two kinds of MAs, $^{237}$Np and five MAs ($^{237}$Np, $^{241}$Am, $^{243}$Am, $^{244}$Cm and $^{245}$Cm) are incorporated homogeneously into the MOX fuel assembly. The transmutation of MAs is simulated with different initial MOX concentrations. The results indicate an overall nice efficiency of transmutation in both initial MOX concentrations, especially for the two kinds of MAs primarily generated in the UOX fuel, $^{237}$Np and $^{241}$Am. In addition, the inclusion of $^{237}$Np in MOX has no large influence for other MAs, while the transmutation efficiency of $^{237}$Np is excellent. The transmutation of MAs in MOX fuel depletion is expected to be a new, efficient nuclear spent fuel management method for the future nuclear power generation.
Recent experiments show that $Deltagamma$, an observable designed for detecting the chiral magnetic effect (CME), in small collision system $p+A$ is similar with that in heavy ion collision $A+A$. This brings a challenge to the existence of CME becau se it is believed that there is no azimuthal correlation between the orientation of the magnetic field ($Phi_B$) and the participant plane ($Phi_2$) in small collision system. In this work, we introduce three charge density models to describe the inner charge distributions of proton and neutron, and calculate the electric and magnetic fields produced in small $p+A$ collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. Our results show that the contribution of the single projectile proton to the magnetic field is the main source after average over all participants. The azimuthal correlation between $Phi_B$ and $Phi_2$ is small but not vanished. And due to the huge fluctuation of fields strength, the magnetic-field contribution to $Deltagamma$ could be large.
We use the linear sigma model with quarks to find the magnetic field-induced modifications to the neutral pion mass at one-loop level. The magnetic field effects are introduced by using charged particle propagators in the presence of a magnetic backg round in the strong field regime. We show that when accounting for the effects of the magnetic field on the model couplings, the vacuum sigma field and the neutral pion self-energy, the neutral pion mass decreases monotonically as a function of the field strength. We find an excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent lattice QCD calculations, reproducing the monotonically decreasing trend with the field strength as well as the decrease when lattice data approaches the physical vacuum pion mass from larger values.
