A simple method is presented for the simultaneous off-line synchronization of the digitally recorded data-streams from a multi-channel silicon telescope. The method is based both on the synchronization between the separate pairs of silicon strips and on the synchronization relative to an external timing device. Though only a reduced subset of these constraints is necessary in ideal circumstances, it is shown that this minimal set of conditions may not be sufficient for adequate synchronization in all cases. All available sources of information are therefore considered, in order to constrain the final synchronization as well as possible.

We propose and study a method of optical crosstalk suppression for silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) using optical filters. We demonstrate that attaching absorptive visible bandpass filters to the SiPM can substantially reduce the optical crosstalk. M easurements suggest that the absorption of near infrared light is important to achieve this suppression. The proposed technique can be easily applied to suppress the optical crosstalk in SiPMs in cases where filtering near infrared light is compatible with the application.
We have developed a position response calibration method for a micro-channel plate (MCP) detector with a delay-line anode position readout scheme. Using an {em in situ} calibration mask, an accuracy of 8~$mu$m and a resolution of 85~$mu$m (FWHM) have been achieved for MeV-scale $alpha$ particles and ions with energies of $sim$10~keV. At this level of accuracy, the difference between the MCP position responses to high-energy $alpha$ particles and low-energy ions is significant. The improved performance of the MCP detector can find applications in many fields of AMO and nuclear physics. In our case, it helps reducing systematic uncertainties in a high-precision nuclear $beta$-decay experiment.
We describe a novel high-speed front-end electronic board (FEB) for interfacing an array of 32 Silicon Photo-multipliers (SiPM) with a computer. The FEB provides individually adjustable bias on the SiPMs, and performs low-noise analog signal amplific ation, conditioning and digitization. It provides event timing information accurate to 1.3 ns RMS. The back-end data interface is realized on the basis of 100 Mbps Ethernet. The design allows daisy-chaining of up to 256 units into one network interface, thus enabling compact and efficient readout schemes for multi-channel scintillating detectors, using SiPMs as photo-sensors.

To investigate fractoluminescence in scintillating crystals used for particle detection, we have developed a multi-channel setup built around samples of double-cleavage drilled compression (DCDC) geometry in a controllable atmosphere. The setup allow s the continuous digitization over hours of various parameters, including the applied load, and the compressive strain of the sample, as well as the acoustic emission. Emitted visible light is recorded with nanosecond resolution, and crack propagation is monitored using infrared lighting and camera. An example of application to Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) is provided.
An improved method of energy calibration of position-sensitive silicon detector is presented. Instead of the parabolic function used in traditional method, a new function describing the relation of position and energy is introduced and achieves bette r energy resolution. For the 8.088 MeV alpha decay of 213Rn calibrated by this new method, the energy resolution is determined to be about 87 keV (FWHM), which is better than the result of the traditional method, 104 keV (FWHM). In addition, different functions can be tried in the new method, which makes the calibration of various detectors with different performances possible.
