The possibility of producing polymer-bonded magnets with the aid of additive processes, such as 3D printing, opens up a multitude of new areas of application. Almost any structures and prototypes can be produced cost-effectively in small quantities. Extending the 3D printing process allows the manufacturing of anisotropic magnetic structures by aligning the magnetic easy axis of ferromagnetic particles inside a paste-like compound material along an external magnetic field. This is achieved by two different approaches: First, the magnetic field for aligning the particles is provided by a permanent magnet. Secondly, the 3D printing process itselfs generates an anisotropic behavior of the structures. An inexpensive and customizable end-user fused filament fabrication 3D printer is used to print the magnetic samples. The magnetical properties of different magnetic anisotropic Sr ferrite and SmFeN materials are investigated and discussed.

Varying only the in-plane or out-of-plane dimensions of nanostructures produces a wide range of colourful elements in metasurfaces and thin films. However, achieving shades of grey and control of colour saturation remains challenging. Here, we introd uce a hybrid approach to colour generation based on the tuning of nanostructure geometry in all three dimensions. Through two-photon polymerization lithography, we systematically investigated colour generation from the simple single nanopillar geometry made of low-refractive-index material; realizing grayscale and full colour palettes with control of hue, saturation, brightness through tuning of height, diameter, and periodicity of nanopillars. Arbitrary colourful and grayscale images were painted by mapping desired prints to precisely controllable parameters during 3D printing. We extend our understanding of the scattering properties of the low-refractive-index nanopillar to demonstrate grayscale inversion and colour desaturation, with steganography at the level of single nanopillars.
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external electric field for both skyrmions and antiskyrmions. The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy is beneficial to this manipulation.

Temperature dependence of magnetization curves of well homogenized samples of Ce(Co$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_5$ ($0le x le 0.7$), a family of representative $4f$-$3d$ intermetallic magnets found in rare-earth permanent magnets, is measured. A remarkable enh ancement of intrinsic coercivity is observed with $x=0.3$ and $x=0.4$, persisting to higher temperatures. This experimental observation is theoretically attributed to an effect of electronic correlation among $4f$-electrons. That is, an intrinsic pinning happens originating in an anomalously enhanced magnetic anisotropy energy contributed by an order of magnitude stronger charge-transfer process between $4f$-electrons and $3d$-electrons, than the conventional crystal field effects. It is demonstrated that the $4f$-$3d$ charge-transfer process depends on the direction of magnetization in the middle of a crossover of the valence state of Ce between CeCu$_5$ with robust Ce$^{3+}$ and CeCo$_5$ with the mixed valence state.
We theoretically study the influence of a predominant field-like spin-orbit torque on the magnetization switching of small devices with a uniform magnetization. We show that for a certain range of ratios (0.23-0.55) of the Slonczewski to the field-li ke torques, it is possible to deterministically switch the magnetization without requiring any external assist field. A precise control of the pulse length is not necessary, but the pulse edge sharpness is critical. The proposed switching scheme is numerically verified to be effective in devices by micromagnetic simulations. Switching without any external assist field is of great interest for the application of spin-orbit torques to magnetic memories.
Nanostructured permanent magnets are gaining increasing interest and importance for applications such as generators and motors. Thermal management is a key concern since performance of permanent magnets decreases with temperature. We investigated the magnetic and thermal transport properties of rare-earth free nanostructured SrFe12O19 magnets produced by the current activated pressure assisted densification. The synthesized magnets have aligned grains such that their magnetic easy axis is perpendicular to their largest surface area to maximize their magnetic performance. The SrFe12O19 magnets have fine grain sizes in the cross-plane direction and substantially larger grain sizes in the in-plane direction. It was found that this microstructure results in approximately a factor of two higher thermal conductivity in the in-plane direction, providing an opportunity for effective cooling. The phonons are the dominant heat carriers in this type of permanent magnets near room temperature. Temperature and direction dependent thermal conductivity measurements indicate that both Umklapp and grain boundary scattering are important in the in-plane direction, where the characteristic grain size is relatively large, while grain boundary scattering dominates the cross-plane thermal transport. The investigated nano/microstructural design strategy should translate well to other material systems and thus have important implications for thermal management of nanostructured permanent magnets.
