In this letter, we introduce a novel mixed terahertz (THz)-radio frequency (RF) wireless system architecture, which can be used for backhaul/fronthaul applications, and we deliver the theoretical framework for its performance assessment. In more detail, after identifying the main design parameters and characteristics, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio cumulative density function, the outage probability, and the symbol error rate, assuming that the system experiences the joint effect of fading and stochastic antenna misalignment. The derived analytical framework is verified through simulations and quantifies the systems effectiveness and reliability. Finally, our results contribute to the extraction of useful design guidelines.

Physical layer security is known as a promising paradigm to ensure security for the beyond 5G (B5G) networks in the presence of eavesdroppers. In this paper, we elaborate on a tractable analysis framework to evaluate the reliability and security of w ireless-powered decode-and-forward (DF) multi-relay networks. The nonlinear energy harvesters, in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI) and channel estimation errors (CEEs) are taken into account in the considered system. To further improve the secure performance, two relay selection strategies are presented: 1) suboptimal relay selection (SRS); 2) optimal relay selection (ORS). Specifically, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived in closed-form. For the IP, we consider that the eavesdropper can wiretap the signal from the source or the relay. In order to obtain more useful insights, we carry out the asymptotic analysis and diversity orders for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime under non-ideal and ideal conditions. Numerical results show that: 1) Although the mismatches of amplitude/phase of transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) limit the OP performance, it can enhance IP performance; 2) Large number of relays yields better OP performance; 3) There are error floors for the OP because of the CEEs; 4) There is a trade-off for the OP and IO to obtain the balance between reliability and security.
In this paper, an energy efficiency (EE) game in a MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) communication system is considered. The existence and the uniqueness of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) is affirmed. A bisection search algorithm is designed to find this unique NE. Despite being sub-optimal for deploying the $varepsilon$-approximate NE of the game when the number of antennas in transmitter is unequal to receivers, the policy found by the proposed algorithm is shown to be more efficient than the classical allocation techniques. Moreover, compared to the general algorithm based on fractional programming technique, our proposed algorithm is easier to implement. Simulation shows that even the policy found by proposed algorithm is not the NE of the game, the deviation w.r.t. to the exact NE is small and the resulted policy actually Pareto-dominates the unique NE of the game at least for 2-user situation.
We consider futuristic, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS)-aided communication between a base station (BS) and a user equipment (UE) for two distinct scenarios: a single-input, single-output (SISO) system whereby the BS has a single antenna, and a multi-input, single-output (MISO) system whereby the BS has multiple antennas. For the considered IRS-assisted downlink, we compute the effective capacity (EC), which is a quantitative measure of the statistical quality-of-service (QoS) offered by a communication system experiencing random fading. For our analysis, we consider the two widely-known assumptions on channel state information (CSI) -- i.e., perfect CSI and no CSI, at the BS. Thereafter, we first derive the distribution of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both SISO and MISO scenarios, and subsequently derive closed-form expressions for the EC under perfect CSI and no CSI cases, for both SISO and MISO scenarios. Furthermore, for the SISO and MISO systems with no CSI, it turns out that the EC could be maximized further by searching for an optimal transmission rate $r^*$, which is computed by exploiting the iterative gradient-descent method. We provide extensive simulation results which investigate the impact of the various system parameters, e.g., QoS exponent, power budget, number of transmit antennas at the BS, number of reflective elements at the IRS etc., on the EC of the system.

The scarcity of spectrum resources in current wireless communication systems has sparked enormous research interest in the terahertz (THz) frequency band. This band is characterized by fundamentally different propagation properties resulting in diffe rent interference structures from what we have observed so far at lower frequencies. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the coverage probability of downlink transmission in THz communication systems within a three-dimensional (3D) environment. First, we establish a 3D propagation model which considers the molecular absorption loss, 3D directional antennas at both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), interference from nearby APs, and dynamic blockages caused by moving humans. Then, we develop a novel easy-to-use analytical framework based on the dominant interferer analysis to evaluate the coverage probability, the novelty of which lies in the incorporation of the instantaneous interference and the vertical height of THz devices. Our numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of our analysis and reveal that the coverage probability significantly decreases when the transmission distance increases. We also show the increasing blocker density and increasing AP density impose different impacts on the coverage performance when the UE-AP link of interest is in line-of-sight. We further show that the coverage performance improvement brought by increasing the antenna directivity at APs is higher than that brought by increasing the antenna directivity at UEs.
In the Internet of Things, learning is one of most prominent tasks. In this paper, we consider an Internet of Things scenario where federated learning is used with simultaneous transmission of model data and wireless power. We investigate the trade-o ff between the number of communication rounds and communication round time while harvesting energy to compensate the energy expenditure. We formulate and solve an optimization problem by considering the number of local iterations on devices, the time to transmit-receive the model updates, and to harvest sufficient energy. Numerical results indicate that maximum ratio transmission and zero-forcing beamforming for the optimization of the local iterations on devices substantially boost the test accuracy of the learning task. Moreover, maximum ratio transmission instead of zero-forcing provides the best test accuracy and communication round time trade-off for various energy harvesting percentages. Thus, it is possible to learn a model quickly with few communication rounds without depleting the battery.
