Recent years have seen the rise of convolutional neural network techniques in exemplar-based image synthesis. These methods often rely on the minimization of some variational formulation on the image space for which the minimizers are assumed to be the solutions of the synthesis problem. In this paper we investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, another framework to deal with this problem using an alternate sampling/minimization scheme. First, we use results from information geometry to assess that our method yields a probability measure which has maximum entropy under some constraints in expectation. Then, we turn to the analysis of our method and we show, using recent results from the Markov chain literature, that its error can be explicitly bounded with constants which depend polynomially in the dimension even in the non-convex setting. This includes the case where the constraints are defined via a differentiable neural network. Finally, we present an extensive experimental study of the model, including a comparison with state-of-the-art methods and an extension to style transfer.

This survey provides an exposition of a suite of techniques based on the theory of polynomials, collectively referred to as polynomial methods, which have recently been applied to address several challenging problems in statistical inference successf ully. Topics including polynomial approximation, polynomial interpolation and majorization, moment space and positive polynomials, orthogonal polynomials and Gaussian quadrature are discussed, with their major probabilistic and statistical applications in property estimation on large domains and learning mixture models. These techniques provide useful tools not only for the design of highly practical algorithms with provable optimality, but also for establishing the fundamental limits of the inference problems through the method of moment matching. The effectiveness of the polynomial method is demonstrated in concrete problems such as entropy and support size estimation, distinct elements problem, and learning Gaussian mixture models.
Recently, deep generative adversarial networks for image generation have advanced rapidly; yet, only a small amount of research has focused on generative models for irregular structures, particularly meshes. Nonetheless, mesh generation and synthesis remains a fundamental topic in computer graphics. In this work, we propose a novel framework for synthesizing geometric textures. It learns geometric texture statistics from local neighborhoods (i.e., local triangular patches) of a single reference 3D model. It learns deep features on the faces of the input triangulation, which is used to subdivide and generate offsets across multiple scales, without parameterization of the reference or target mesh. Our network displaces mesh vertices in any direction (i.e., in the normal and tangential direction), enabling synthesis of geometric textures, which cannot be expressed by a simple 2D displacement map. Learning and synthesizing on local geometric patches enables a genus-oblivious framework, facilitating texture transfer between shapes of different genus.
In this paper, we consider the information content of maximum ranked set sampling procedure with unequal samples (MRSSU) in terms of Tsallis entropy which is a nonadditive generalization of Shannon entropy. We obtain several results of Tsallis entrop y including bounds, monotonic properties, stochastic orders, and sharp bounds under some assumptions. We also compare the uncertainty and information content of MRSSU with its counterpart in the simple random sampling (SRS) data. Finally, we develop some characterization results in terms of cumulative Tsallis entropy and residual Tsallis entropy of MRSSU and SRS data.
We study the precise asymptotic volume of balls in Orlicz spaces and show that the volume of the intersection of two Orlicz balls undergoes a phase transition when the dimension of the ambient space tends to infinity. This generalizes a result of Sch echtman and Schmuckenschlager [GAFA, Lecture notes in Math. 1469 (1991), 174--178] for $ell_p^d$-balls. As another application, we determine the precise asymptotic volume ratio for $2$-concave Orlicz spaces $ell_M^d$. Our method rests on ideas from statistical mechanics and large deviations theory, more precisely the maximum entropy or Gibbs principle for non-interacting particles, and presents a natural approach and fresh perspective to such geometric and volumetric questions. In particular, our approach explains how the $p$-generalized Gaussian distribution occurs in problems related to the geometry of $ell_p^d$-balls, which are Orlicz balls when the Orlicz function is $M(t) = |t|^p$.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a powerful tool in statistics and machine learning. While existing study of PCA focuses on the recovery of principal components and their associated eigenvalues, there are few precise characterizations of individ ual principal component scores that yield low-dimensional embedding of samples. That hinders the analysis of various spectral methods. In this paper, we first develop an $ell_p$ perturbation theory for a hollowed version of PCA in Hilbert spaces which provably improves upon the vanilla PCA in the presence of heteroscedastic noises. Through a novel $ell_p$ analysis of eigenvectors, we investigate entrywise behaviors of principal component score vectors and show that they can be approximated by linear functionals of the Gram matrix in $ell_p$ norm, which includes $ell_2$ and $ell_infty$ as special examples. For sub-Gaussian mixture models, the choice of $p$ giving optimal bounds depends on the signal-to-noise ratio, which further yields optimality guarantees for spectral clustering. For contextual community detection, the $ell_p$ theory leads to a simple spectral algorithm that achieves the information threshold for exact recovery. These also provide optimal recovery results for Gaussian mixture and stochastic block models as special cases.
