Due to the fact that no study to date has shown the experimental validity of ACC-based measures of body sway with respect to posturography for subjects with vestibular deficits, the aim of the present study was: i) to develop and validate a practical tool that can allow clinicians to measure postural sway derangements in an otoneurological setting by ACC, and ii) to provide reliable, sensitive and accurate automatic analysis of sway that could help in discriminating unilateral vestibular failure (UVF) patients. Thus, a group of 13 patients (seven females, 6 males; mean age 48.6 +/- 6.4 years) affected for at least 6 months by UVF and 13 matched healthy subjects were instructed to maintain an upright position during a static forceplate-based posturography (FBP) acquisition while wearing a Movit sensor (by Captiks) with 3-D accelerometers mounted on the posterior trunk near the body centre of mass. Pearson product moment correlation demonstrated a high level of correspondence of four time-domain and three frequency-domain measures extracted by ACC and FBP testing; in addition, t-test demonstrated that two ACC-based time- and frequency-domain parameters were reliable measures in discriminating UVF subjects. These aspects, overall, should further highlight the attention of clinicians and researchers to this kind of sway recording technique in the field of otoneurological disorders by considering the possibility to enrich the amount of quantitative and qualitative information useful for discrimination, diagnosis and treatment of UVF. In conclusion, we believe the present ACC-based measurement of sway offers a patient-friendly, reliable, inexpensive and efficient alternative recording technique that is useful - together with clinical balance and mobility tests - in various circumstances, as well as in outcome studies involving diagnosis, follow-up and rehabilitation of UVF patients.

The uncertainty principle sets a bound on our ability to predict the measurement outcomes of two incompatible observables which are measured on a quantum particle simultaneously. In quantum information theory, the uncertainty principle can be formula ted in terms of the Shannon entropy. Entropic uncertainty bound can be improved by adding a particle which correlates with the measured particle. The added particle acts as a quantum memory. In this work, a method is provided for obtaining the entropic uncertainty relations in the presence of a quantum memory by using quantum coherence. In the method, firstly, one can use the quantum relative entropy of quantum coherence to obtain the uncertainty relations. Secondly, these relations are applied to obtain the entropic uncertainty relations in the presence of a quantum memory. In comparison with other methods this approach is much simpler. Also, for a given state, the upper bounds on the sum of the relative entropies of unilateral coherences are provided, and it is shown which one is tighter. In addition, using the upper bound obtained for unilateral coherence, the nontrivial upper bound on the sum of the entropies for different observables is derived in the presence of a quantum memory.

Starting from two case histories, where only after thorough Failure Analysis the suddenly appearance of a failure was linked to much earlier events, the possibility of improving the reliability and of adjusting the reliability prediction tools are discussed.
Body-worn cameras are now commonly used for logging daily life, sports, and law enforcement activities, creating a large volume of archived footage. This paper studies the problem of classifying frames of footage according to the activity of the came ra-wearer with an emphasis on application to real-world police body-worn video. Real-world datasets pose a different set of challenges from existing egocentric vision datasets: the amount of footage of different activities is unbalanced, the data contains personally identifiable information, and in practice it is difficult to provide substantial training footage for a supervised approach. We address these challenges by extracting features based exclusively on motion information then segmenting the video footage using a semi-supervised classification algorithm. On publicly available datasets, our method achieves results comparable to, if not better than, supervised and/or deep learning methods using a fraction of the training data. It also shows promising results on real-world police body-worn video.
Due to the complexity and cumbersomeness of Gamma Knife (GK) manual forward planning, the quality of the resulting treatment plans heavily depends on the planners skill, experience and the amount of effort devoted to plan development. Hence, GK plan quality may vary significantly among institutions and planners, and even for a same planner at different cases. This is particularly a concern for challenging cases with complicated geometry, such as vestibular schwannoma cases. The purpose of this retrospective study is to investigate the plan quality and variation in the manually forward planned, clinically acceptable GK treatment plans of 22 previous vestibular schwannoma cases. Considering the impacts of different patient geometry and different trade-offs among the planning objectives in GK planning, it is difficult to objectively assess the plan quality across different cases. To reduce these confounding factors on plan quality assessment, we employed our recently developed multiresolution-level inverse planning algorithm to generate a golden plan for each case, which is expected to be on or close to the pareto surface with a similar trade-off as used in the manual plan. The plan quality of the manual plan is then quantified in terms of its deviation from the golden plan. A scoring criterion between 0-100 was designed to calculate a final score for each manual plan to simplify our analysis. Large quality variation was observed in these 22 cases, with two cases having a score lower than 75, three cases scoring between 80 and 85, two cases between 85 and 90, eight cases between 90 and 95, and seven cases higher than 95. Inter- and intra- planner variability was also observed in our study. This large variation in GK manual planning deserves high attention, and merits further investigation on how to reduce the variation in GK treatment plan quality.

Vehicle safety systems have substantially decreased motor vehicle crash-related injuries and fatalities, but injuries to the lumbar spine still have been reported. Experimental and computational analyses of upright and, particularly, reclined occupan ts in frontal crashes have shown that the lumbar spine can be subjected to axial compression followed by combined compression-flexion loading. Lumbar spine failure tolerance in combined compression-flexion has not been widely explored in the literature. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure the failure tolerance of the lumbar spine in combined compression and flexion. Forty 3-vertebra lumbar spine segments were pre-loaded with axial compression and then subjected to dynamic flexion bending until failure. Clinically relevant middle vertebra fractures were observed in twenty-one of the specimens, including compression and burst fractures. The remaining nineteen specimens experienced failure at the potting grip interface. Since specimen characteristics and pre-test axial load varied widely within the sample, failure forces (mean 3.4 kN, range 1.6-5.1 kN) and moments (mean 73 Nm, range 0-181 Nm) also varied widely. Tobit univariate regressions were performed to determine the relationship between censored failure tolerance and specimen sex, segment type (upper/lower), age, and cross-sectional area. Age, sex, and cross-sectional area significantly affected failure force and moment individually (p<0.0024). These data can be used to develop injury prediction tools for lumbar spine fractures and further research in future safety systems.
