Activity recognition is the ability to identify and recognize the action or goals of the agent. The agent can be any object or entity that performs action that has end goals. The agents can be a single agent performing the action or group of agents performing the actions or having some interaction. Human activity recognition has gained popularity due to its demands in many practical applications such as entertainment, healthcare, simulations and surveillance systems. Vision based activity recognition is gaining advantage as it does not require any human intervention or physical contact with humans. Moreover, there are set of cameras that are networked with the intention to track and recognize the activities of the agent. Traditional applications that were required to track or recognize human activities made use of wearable devices. However, such applications require physical contact of the person. To overcome such challenges, vision based activity recognition system can be used, which uses a camera to record the video and a processor that performs the task of recognition. The work is implemented in two stages. In the first stage, an approach for the Implementation of Activity recognition is proposed using background subtraction of images, followed by 3D- Convolutional Neural Networks. The impact of using Background subtraction prior to 3D-Convolutional Neural Networks has been reported. In the second stage, the work is further extended and implemented on Raspberry Pi, that can be used to record a stream of video, followed by recognizing the activity that was involved in the video. Thus, a proof-of-concept for activity recognition using small, IoT based device, is provided, which can enhance the system and extend its applications in various forms like, increase in portability, networking, and other capabilities of the device.

Internet of Things (IoT) enabled wearable sensors for health monitoring are widely used to reduce the cost of personal healthcare and improve quality of life. The sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, characterized by the abnormal reduction or pause in brea thing, greatly affects the quality of sleep of an individual. This paper introduces a novel method for apnea detection (pause in breathing) from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals obtained from wearable devices. The novelty stems from the high resolution of apnea detection on a second-by-second basis, and this is achieved using a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network for feature extraction and detection of sleep apnea events. The proposed method exhibits an accuracy of 99.56% and a sensitivity of 96.05%. This model outperforms several lower resolution state-of-the-art apnea detection methods. The complexity of the proposed model is analyzed. We also analyze the feasibility of model pruning and binarization to reduce the resource requirements on a wearable IoT device. The pruned model with 80% sparsity exhibited an accuracy of 97.34% and a sensitivity of 86.48%. The binarized model exhibited an accuracy of 75.59% and sensitivity of 63.23%. The performance of low complexity patient-specific models derived from the generic model is also studied to analyze the feasibility of retraining existing models to fit patient-specific requirements. The patient-specific models on average exhibited an accuracy of 97.79% and sensitivity of 92.23%. The source code for this work is made publicly available.

Deep learning and other machine learning approaches are deployed to many systems related to Internet of Things or IoT. However, it faces challenges that adversaries can take loopholes to hack these systems through tampering history data. This paper f irst presents overall points of adversarial machine learning. Then, we illustrate traditional methods, such as Petri Net cannot solve this new question efficiently. To help IoT data analysis more efficient, we propose a retrieval method based on deep learning (recurrent neural network). Besides, this paper presents a research on data retrieval solution to avoid hacking by adversaries in the fields of adversary machine leaning. It further directs the new approaches in terms of how to implementing this framework in IoT settings based on adversarial deep learning.
Gesture recognition and hand motion tracking are important tasks in advanced gesture based interaction systems. In this paper, we propose to apply a sliding windows filtering approach to sample the incoming streams of data from data gloves and a deci sion tree model to recognize the gestures in real time for a manual grafting operation of a vegetable seedling propagation facility. The sequence of these recognized gestures defines the tasks that are taking place, which helps to evaluate individuals performances and to identify any bottlenecks in real time. In this work, two pairs of data gloves are utilized, which reports the location of the fingers, hands, and wrists wirelessly (i.e., via Bluetooth). To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, a preliminary experiment was conducted in multiple lab settings of tomato grafting operations, where multiple subjects wear the data gloves while performing different tasks. Our results show an accuracy of 91% on average, in terms of gesture recognition in real time by employing our proposed framework.

Deep-learning-based methods for different applications have been shown vulnerable to adversarial examples. These examples make deployment of such models in safety-critical tasks questionable. Use of deep neural networks as inverse problem solvers has generated much excitement for medical imaging including CT and MRI, but recently a similar vulnerability has also been demonstrated for these tasks. We show that for such inverse problem solvers, one should analyze and study the effect of adversaries in the measurement-space, instead of the signal-space as in previous work. In this paper, we propose to modify the training strategy of end-to-end deep-learning-based inverse problem solvers to improve robustness. We introduce an auxiliary network to generate adversarial examples, which is used in a min-max formulation to build robust image reconstruction networks. Theoretically, we show for a linear reconstruction scheme the min-max formulation results in a singular-value(s) filter regularized solution, which suppresses the effect of adversarial examples occurring because of ill-conditioning in the measurement matrix. We find that a linear network using the proposed min-max learning scheme indeed converges to the same solution. In addition, for non-linear Compressed Sensing (CS) reconstruction using deep networks, we show significant improvement in robustness using the proposed approach over other methods. We complement the theory by experiments for CS on two different datasets and evaluate the effect of increasing perturbations on trained networks. We find the behavior for ill-conditioned and well-conditioned measurement matrices to be qualitatively different.
Speaker embedding models that utilize neural networks to map utterances to a space where distances reflect similarity between speakers have driven recent progress in the speaker recognition task. However, there is still a significant performance gap between recognizing speakers in the training set and unseen speakers. The latter case corresponds to the few-shot learning task, where a trained model is evaluated on unseen classes. Here, we optimize a speaker embedding model with prototypical network loss (PNL), a state-of-the-art approach for the few-shot image classification task. The resulting embedding model outperforms the state-of-the-art triplet loss based models in both speaker verification and identification tasks, for both seen and unseen speakers.
