Linear models are regularly used for mapping cores to tiles in a chip. System-on-Chip (SoC) design requires integration of functional units with varying sizes, but conventional models only account for identical-sized cores. Linear models cannot calculate the varying areas of cores in SoCs directly and must rely on approximations. We propose using non-linear models: Semi-definite programming (SDP) allows easy model definitions and achieves approximately 20% reduced area and up to 80% reduced white space. As computational time is similar to linear models, they can be applied, practically.

For a system-level design of Networks-on-Chip for 3D heterogeneous System-on-Chip (SoC), the locations of components, routers and vertical links are determined from an application model and technology parameters. In conventional methods, the two inpu ts are accounted for separately; here, we define an integrated problem that considers both application model and technology parameters. We show that this problem does not allow for exact solution in reasonable time, as common for many design problems. Therefore, we contribute a heuristic by proposing design steps, which are based on separation of intralayer and interlayer communication. The advantage is that this new problem can be solved with well-known methods. We use 3D Vision SoC case studies to quantify the advantages and the practical usability of the proposed optimization approach. We achieve up to 18.8% reduced white space and up to 12.4% better network performance in comparison to conventional approaches.
We propose a new system identification method, called Sign-Perturbed Sums (SPS), for constructing non-asymptotic confidence regions under mild statistical assumptions. SPS is introduced for linear regression models, including but not limited to FIR s ystems, and we show that the SPS confidence regions have exact confidence probabilities, i.e., they contain the true parameter with a user-chosen exact probability for any finite data set. Moreover, we also prove that the SPS regions are star convex with the Least-Squares (LS) estimate as a star center. The main assumptions of SPS are that the noise terms are independent and symmetrically distributed about zero, but they can be nonstationary, and their distributions need not be known. The paper also proposes a computationally efficient ellipsoidal outer approximation algorithm for SPS. Finally, SPS is demonstrated through a number of simulation experiments.
Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter used to determine foliage cover and crop growth in environmental studies. Smartphones are nowadays ubiquitous sensor devices with high computational power, moderate cost, and high-quality sensors. A smartphone app, called PocketLAI, was recently presented and tested for acquiring ground LAI estimates. In this letter, we explore the use of state-of-the-art nonlinear Gaussian process regression (GPR) to derive spatially explicit LAI estimates over rice using ground data from PocketLAI and Landsat 8 imagery. GPR has gained popularity in recent years because of their solid Bayesian foundations that offers not only high accuracy but also confidence intervals for the retrievals. We show the first LAI maps obtained with ground data from a smartphone combined with advanced machine learning. This work compares LAI predictions and confidence intervals of the retrievals obtained with PocketLAI to those obtained with classical instruments, such as digital hemispheric photography (DHP) and LI-COR LAI-2000. This letter shows that all three instruments got comparable result but the PocketLAI is far cheaper. The proposed methodology hence opens a wide range of possible applications at moderate cost.
This letter investigates the uplink of a multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array and resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). Alth ough employing massive MIMO at the BS can significantly improve the spectral efficiency, it also leads to high hardware complexity and huge power consumption. To overcome these challenges, we seek to jointly optimize the beamspace hybrid combiner and the ADC quantization bits allocation to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) under some practical constraints. The formulated problem is non-convex due to the non-linear fractional objective function and the non-convex feasible set which is generally intractable. In order to handle these difficulties, we first apply some fractional programming (FP) techniques and introduce auxiliary variables to recast this problem into an equivalent form amenable to optimization. Then, we propose an efficient double-loop iterative algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) and the majorization-minimization (MM) methods to find local stationary solutions. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.
We propose a three-track detection system for two dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) in which a local area influence probabilistic (LAIP) detector works with a trellis-based Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (BCJR) detector to remove intersymbol interferen ce (ISI) and intertrack interference (ITI) among coded data bits as well as media noise due to magnetic grain-bit interactions. Two minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) linear equalizers with different response targets are employed before the LAIP and BCJR detectors. The LAIP detector considers local grain-bit interactions and passes coded bit log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) to the channel decoder, whose output LLRs serve as a priori information to the BCJR detector, which is followed by a second channel decoding pass. Simulation results under 1-shot decoding on a grain-flipping-probability (GFP) media model show that the proposed LAIP/BCJR detection system achieves density gains of 6.8% for center-track detection and 1.2% for three-track detection compared to a standard BCJR/1D-PDNP. The proposed systems BCJR detector bit error rates (BERs) are lower than those of a recently proposed two-track BCJR/2D-PDNP system by factors of (0.55, 0.08) for tracks 1 and 2 respectively.
