We show how to derive a consistent quantum theory of radiation reaction of a non-relativistic point-dipole quantum oscillator by including the dynamical fluctuations of the position of the dipole. The proposed non-linear theory displays neither runaway solutions nor acausal behaviour without requiring additional assumptions. Furthermore, we show that quantum (zero-point) fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are necessary to fulfil the second law of thermodynamics.

For an oscillating electric dipole in the shape of a small, solid, uniformly-polarized, spherical particle, we compute the self-field as well as the radiated electromagnetic field in the surrounding free space. The assumed geometry enables us to obta in the exact solution of Maxwells equations as a function of the dipole moment, the sphere radius, and the oscillation frequency. The self field, which is responsible for the radiation resistance, does not introduce acausal or otherwise anomalous behavior into the dynamics of the bound electrical charges that comprise the dipole. Departure from causality, a well-known feature of the dynamical response of a charged particle to an externally applied force, is shown to arise when the charge is examined in isolation, namely in the absence of the restraining force of an equal but opposite charge that is inevitably present in a dipole radiator. Even in this case, the acausal behavior of the (free) charged particle appears to be rooted in the approximations used to arrive at an estimate of the self-force. When the exact expression of the self-force is used, our numerical analysis indicates that the impulse-response of the particle should remain causal.

It is demonstrated that, if one remains in the framework of quantum mechanics taken alone, stationary states (energy eigenstates) are in no way singled out with respect to nonstationary ones, and moreover the stationary states would be difficult if p ossible to realize in practice. Owing to the nonstationary states any quantum system can absorb or emit energy in arbitrary continuous amounts. The peculiarity of the stationary states appears only if electromagnetic radiation that must always accompany nonstationary processes in real systems is taken into account. On the other hand, when the quantum system absorbs or emits energy in the form of a wave the determining role is played by resonance interaction of the system with the wave. Here again the stationary states manifest themselves. These facts and influence of the resonator upon the incident wave enable one to explain all effects ascribed to manifestation of the corpuscular properties of light (the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect etc.) solely on a base of the wave concept of light.
We investigate the interaction of two two-level qubits with a single mode quantum field in a cavity without rotating wave approximation and considering that qubits can be located at an arbitrary distance from each other. We demonstrate that there exi sts a radiation induced interaction potential between atoms. We studied the properties of the system numerically and in addition constructed a simple analytical approximation. It is shown that the observable characteristics are substantially dependent on the distance between the qubits in the strong coupling regime. This allows one to perform the quantum control of the qubits, which can be exploited for the recording and transmission of quantum information.
We investigate the production of photons from coherently oscillating, spatially localized clumps of axionic fields (oscillons and axion stars) in the presence of external electromagnetic fields. We delineate different qualitative behaviour of the pho ton luminosity in terms of an effective dimensionless coupling parameter constructed out of the axion-photon coupling, and field amplitude, oscillation frequency and radius of the axion star. For small values of this dimensionless coupling, we provide a general analytic formula for the dipole radiation field and the photon luminosity per solid angle, including a strong dependence on the radius of the configuration. For moderate to large coupling, we report on a non-monotonic behavior of the luminosity with the coupling strength in the presence of external magnetic fields. After an initial rise in luminosity with the coupling strength, we see a suppression (by an order of magnitude or more compared to the dipole radiation approximation) at moderately large coupling. At sufficiently large coupling, we find a transition to a regime of exponential growth of the luminosity due to parametric resonance. We carry out 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of axion electrodynamics, at small and large coupling, including non-perturbative effects of parametric resonance as well as backreaction effects when necessary. We also discuss medium (plasma) effects that lead to resonant axion to photon conversion, relevance of the coherence of the soliton, and implications of our results in astrophysical and cosmological settings.
We determine the optical response of a thin and dense layer of interacting quantum emitters. We show that in such a dense system, the Lorentz redshift and the associated interaction broadening can be used to control the transmission and reflection sp ectra. In the presence of overlapping resonances, a Dipole-Induced Electromagnetic Transparency (DIET) regime, similar to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), may be achieved. DIET relies on destructive interference between the electromagnetic waves emitted by quantum emitters. Carefully tuning material parameters allows to achieve narrow transmission windows in otherwise completely opaque media. We analyze in details this coherent and collective effect using a generalized Lorentz model and show how it can be controlled. Several potential applications of the phenomenon, such as slow light, are proposed.
