The isostructural series of $S=1$ quantum magnets Cs$_{1-x}$Rb$_{x}$FeCl$_{3}$ is investigated, using both thermodynamic measurements and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. It is found that increasing Rb content the system evolves from the gapped state at $x=0$, through a quantum phase transition at $xsim 0.35$, and to the magnetically ordered state at larger $x$. Inelastic neutron experiments for $x=0$, $x=0.3$, and $x=1$ demonstrate that the magnetic anisotropy and spin interactions are continuously tuned by the chemical composition. For the intermediate concentration all magnetic excitations are substantial broadened suggesting that disorder plays a key role in this species. For the two end-compounds, excitations remain sharp.

Topological insulators are a class of band insulators with non-trivial topology, a result of band inversion due to the strong spin-orbit coupling. The transition between topological and normal insulator can be realized by tuning the spin-orbit coupli ng strength, and has been observed experimentally. However, the impact of chemical disorders on the topological phase transition was not addressed in previous studies. Herein, we report a systematic scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles study of the topological phase transition in single crystals of In doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Surprisingly, no band gap closure was observed across the transition. Furthermore, our spectroscopic-imaging results reveal that In defects are extremely effective suppressors of the band inversion, which leads to microscopic phase separation of topological-insulator-like and normal-insulator-like nano regions across the transition. The observed topological electronic inhomogeneity demonstrates the significant impact of chemical disorders in topological materials, shedding new light on the fundamental understanding of topological phase transition.
We report the magnetism and transport properties of the Heusler compound Fe2+xV1-xAl at -0.10 < x < 0.10 under pressure and a magnetic field. A metal-insulator quantum phase transition occurred at x = -0.05. Application of pressure or a magnetic fiel d facilitated the emergence of finite zero-temperature conductivity around the critical point, which scaled approximately according to the power law. At x < -0.05, a localized paramagnetic spin appeared, whereas above the ferromagnetic quantum critical point at x = 0.05, itinerant ferromagnetism was established. At the quantum critical points at x = -0.05 and 0.05, the resistivity and specific heat exhibited singularities characteristic of a Griffiths phase appearing as an inhomogeneous electronic state.
We explore the magnetically-ordered ground state of the isovalently-substituted Mott-insulator Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ for $x$ $leq$ 0.3 via single crystal growth, magnetometry, neutron diffraction, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), muon s pin rotation ($mu$SR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that the decrease in the magnetic transition temperature on approaching the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase boundary at the La concentration $x_c$ $approx$ 0.3 is accompanied by a strong suppression of both bulk and local ordered magnetic moments, along with a volume-wise separation into magnetically-ordered and paramagnetic regions. The thermal phase transition does not show conventional second-order behavior, since neither a clear signature of dynamic critical behavior nor a power-law divergence of the magnetic correlation length is found for the studied substitution range; this finding becomes increasingly obvious with substitution. Finally, from SANS and magnetometry measurements, we discern a crossover from easy-axis to easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy with increasing La substitution. These results indicate complex changes in magnetic structure upon approaching the phase boundary.

Resistance of Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$(x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 and 0.9) has been measured using four probe method from 5K to 300K with and without a longitudinal magnetic field of 8T. The zero field resistivity of x=0.1 and 0.9 alloys, predominan t contribution to resistivity above near room temperature is due to electron-phonon scattering, whereas for x=05 and 0.7 alloys electron-magnon scattering is dominant. Alloys with x=0.1 and 0.9 exhibit positive magnetoresistance(MR) from 5K to 300K. For x=0.5 and 0.7 alloys, magnetoresistance changes sign from positive to negative with increase in temperature. The temperature at which sign changes increase with Ni concentration in the alloy. The field dependent magnetoresistance is positive for x=0.1, 0.7 and 0.9 alloys whereas it is negative for x=0.5 alloy. MR follows linear behaviour with field for x=0.1 alloy. MR of all other alloys follow a second order polynomial in field.
The phase transition from a topological insulator to a trivial band insulator is studied by angle-resoled photoemission spectroscopy on Bi$_{2-x}$In$_{x}$Se$_{3}$ single crystals. We first report the complete evolution of the bulk band structures thr oughout the transition. The robust surface state and the bulk gap size ($sim$ 0.50 eV) show no significant change upon doping for $x$ = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.175. At $x$ $geq$ 0.225, the surface state completely disappears and the bulk gap size increases, suggesting a sudden gap-closure and topological phase transition around $x sim$ 0.175$-$0.225. We discuss the underlying mechanism of the phase transition, proposing that it is governed by the combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and interactions upon band hybridization. Our study provides a new venue to investigate the mechanism of the topological phase transition induced by non-magnetic impurities.
