In this study, in situ quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) has been employed to probe the water dynamics and reaction mechanisms occurring during the formation of NaOH- and Na2SiO3-activated slags, an important class of low-CO2 cements, in conjunction with isothermal conduction calorimetry (ICC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and N2 sorption measurements. We show that the single ICC reaction peak in the NaOH-activated slag is accompanied with a transformation of free water to bound water (from QENS analysis), which directly signals formation of a sodium-containing aluminum-substituted calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-(N)-A-S-H) gel, as confirmed by FTIR. In contrast, the Na2SiO3-activated slag sample exhibits two distinct reaction peaks in the ICC data, where the first reaction peak is associated with conversion of constrained water to bound and free water, and the second peak is accompanied with conversion of free water to bound and constrained water (from QENS analysis). The second conversion is attributed to formation of the main reaction product (i.e., C-(N)-A-S-H gel) as confirmed by FTIR and N2 sorption data. Analysis of the QENS, FTIR and N2 sorption data together with thermodynamic information from the literature explicitly shows that the first reaction peak is associated with the formation of an initial gel (similar to C-(N)-A-S-H gel) that is governed by the Na+ ions and silicate species in Na2SiO3 solution and the dissolved Ca/Al species from slag. Hence, this study exemplifies the power of in situ QENS, when combined with laboratory-based characterization techniques, in elucidating the water dynamics and associated chemical mechanisms occurring in complex materials, and has provided important mechanistic insight on the early-age reactions occurring during formation of two alkali-activated slags.

Nitrogen gas accidentally sealed in a sample container produces various spurious effects in elastic neutron scattering measurements. These effects are systematically investigated and the details of the spurious scattering are presented.
Hydrogen fuel can contribute as a masterpiece in conceiving a robust carbon-free economic puzzle if cleaner methods to produce hydrogen become technically efficient and economically viable. Organic photocatalytic materials such as conjugated micropor ous materials (CMPs) are potential attractive candidates for water splitting as their energy levels and optical bandgap as well as porosity are tunable through chemical synthesis. The performances of CMPs depend also on the mass transfer of reactants, intermediates and products. Here, we study the mass transfer of water (H2O and D2O), and of triethylamine used as a hole scavenger for hydrogen evolution, by means of neutron spectroscopy. We find that the stiffness of the nodes of the CMPs is correlated with an increase in trapped water, reflected by motions too slow to be quantified by quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). Our study highlights that the addition of the polar sulfone group results in additional interactions between water and the CMP, as evidenced by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), leading to changes in the translational diffusion of water, as determined from the QENS measurements. No changes in triethylamine motions could be observed within CMPs from the present investigations.

In this paper, we present a concept to fabricate copper based Ti2AlC MAX phase composite focusing on the processing method and the reaction which takes place at the matrix-reinforcement interface to yield 2D TiCx. Copper was reinforced with Ti2AlC (a gglomerate size ~40 micron) phase and sintered in vacuum by pressure-less sintering. The interface of consolidated samples was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to reveal the microstructural details. In the due course of consolidation of Cu-Ti2AlC; the formation of 2D TiCx from the reaction between Cu and Ti2AlC by forming solid solution between Cu and Al was facilitated. The reaction between Cu and Ti2AlC has been elaborated and analyzed in the light of corroborated results. Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) throws light on the elemental distribution at the site of interfacial reaction. This investigation elaborates a proof of concept to process an in-situ 2D TiCx reinforced Cu metal matrix composite (MMC).

We report the complete set of elastic constants and the bulk modulus for single crystal Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) at room temperature obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The bulk modulus from Brillouin is found to be 103 GPa, in a good agreement with earlier x-ray studies. We also derived the refractive index along all principal axes and found PMN to be optically isotropic, with a refractive index of 2.52 +/- 0.02. PMN shows mechanical anisotropy with A=1.7. The MD simulations of PMN using the random site model overestimate the elastic constants by 20-50 GPa and the bulk modulus is 148 GPa, but the mechanical anisotropy matches the Brillouin results of A = 1.7. We also determined the elastic constants for various models of PMN and we find variation in the elastic constants based on chemical ordering.

Recent neutron-scattering experiments on La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 single crystals by Wakimoto et al. have revealed that elastic magnetic peaks appear at low temperatures in both insulating (x=0.02-0.05) and superconducting (x=0.06) samples. We have carried o ut further investigations particularly on the elastic incommensurate peaks for x=0.06, and found that the integrated intensity drastically changes across the low temperature insulator- superconductor boundary; the intensity of x=0.06 is 4 times smaller than that of x=0.05, while the intensity in the insulating region stays constant.
