An analytical variational method for the ground state of the biased quantum Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime is presented. This analytical variational method can be obtained by a unitary transformation or alternatively by assuming the form of ground state wave function. The key point of the method is to introduce a variational parameter $lambda$, which can be determined by minimizing the energy functional. Using this method, we calculate physical observables with high accuracy in comparison with the numerical exact one. Our method evidently improves the results from the widely used general rotating-wave approximation (GRWA) in both qualitative and quantitative ways.

We present a protocol to generate a large degree of squeezing of a boson (light) field mode strongly coupled to a two-level system in the dispersive regime. Our protocol exploits the strong dispersive coupling to introduce a time dependent frequency change of the boson field. With an appropriately timed sequence of sudden frequency changes, the quantum noise fluctuations in one quadrature of the field can be reduced well below the standard quantum limit, with a correspondingly increased uncertainty in the orthogonal quadrature. Even in the presence of realistic noise and imperfections, the protocol should be capable of generating substantial squeezing with present experimental capabilities.
We present a mean-photon-number dependent variational method, which works well in whole coupling regime if the photon energy is dominant over the spin-flipping, to evaluate the properties of the Rabi model for both the ground state and the excited st ates. For the ground state, it is shown that the previous approximate methods, the generalized rotating-wave approximation (only working well in the strong coupling limit) and the generalized variational method (only working well in the weak coupling limit), can be recovered in the corresponding coupling limits. The key point of our method is to tailor the merits of these two existing methods by introducing a mean-photon-number dependent variational parameter. For the excited states, our method yields considerable improvements over the generalized rotating-wave approximation. The variational method proposed could be readily applied to the more complex models, for which an analytic formula is difficult to be formulated.
Environmental influences on the dynamics of a coupled qubit-oscillator system are studied analytically. We investigate the case of a quasi-degenerate qubit within the ultra-strong coupling regime for which the qubit frequency is much smaller than the frequency of the oscillator, and the coupling between the qubit and the oscillator is large, both of which invalidate the usually employed rotating wave approximation. In contrast to the standard quantum optics master equation, we explicitly take the qubit-oscillator coupling into account while microscopically deriving a dressed state master equation. Using the derived master equation, we discuss a spectroscopic technique which can be used to probe the dressed energy level structure of the qubit-oscillator system.
We present an analytical method for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. While still operating in the frame of the generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA), our method further embraces the idea of introducing variational parameters. The optimal va lue of the variational parameter is determined by minimizing the energy function of the ground state. Comparing with numerical exact results, we show that our method evidently improves the accuracy of the conventional GRWA in calculating fundamental physical quantities, such as energy spectra, mean photon number, and dynamics. Interestingly, the accuracy of our method allows us to reproduce the asymptotic behavior of mean photon number in large frequency ratio for the ground state and investigate the quasi-periodical structure of the time evolution, which are incapable of being predicted by the GRWA. The applicable parameter ranges cover the ultrastrong coupling regime, which will be helpful to recent experiments.

We describe the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a bosonic mode coupled to a zero-temperature bath in the deep strong coupling (DSC) regime. We provide an analytical solution for this open system dynamics in the off-resonance case of the qubit-mo de interaction. Collapses and revivals of parity chain populations and the oscillatory behavior of the mean photon number are predicted. At the same time, photon number wave packets, propagating back and forth along parity chains, become incoherently mixed. Finally, we investigate numerically the effect of detuning on the validity of the analytical solution.
