This work is devoted to the investigation of nontrivial transport properties in many-body quantum systems. Precisely, we study transport in the steady state of spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chains, driven out of equilibrium by two magnetic baths with fixed, different magnetization. We take grad

We investigate an open XXZ spin 1/2 chain driven out of equilibrium by coupling with boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations in XY plane. Symmetries of the model are revealed which appear to be different for spin chains of odd and e ven sizes. As a result, spin current is found to alternate with chain length, ruling out the possibility of ballistic transport. Heat transport is switched off completely by virtue of another global symmetry. Further, we investigate the model numerically and analytically. At strong coupling, we find exact nonequilibrium steady state using a perturbation theory. The state is determined by solving secular conditions which guarantee self-consistency of the perturbative expansion. We find nontrivial dependence of the magnetization current on the spin chain anisotropy $Delta$ in the critical region $|Delta|<1$, and a phenomenon of tripling of the twisting angle along the chain for narrow lacunes of $Delta$.
In this work we analyze the simultaneous emergence of diffusive energy transport and local thermalization in a nonequilibrium one-dimensional quantum system, as a result of integrability breaking. Specifically, we discuss the local properties of the steady state induced by thermal boundary driving in a XXZ spin chain with staggered magnetic field. By means of efficient large-scale matrix product simulations of the equation of motion of the system, we calculate its steady state in the long-time limit. We start by discussing the energy transport supported by the system, finding it to be ballistic in the integrable limit and diffusive when the staggered field is finite. Subsequently, we examine the reduced density operators of neighboring sites and find that for large systems they are well approximated by local thermal states of the underlying Hamiltonian in the nonintegrable regime, even for weak staggered fields. In the integrable limit, on the other hand, this behavior is lost, and the identification of local temperatures is no longer possible. Our results agree with the intuitive connection between energy diffusion and thermalization.
Systems in which the heat flux depends on the direction of the flow are said to present thermal rectification. This effect has attracted much theoretical and experimental interest in recent years. However, in most theoretical models the effect is fou nd to vanish in the thermodynamic limit, in disagreement with experiment. The purpose of this paper is to show that the rectification may be restored by including an energy-conserving noise which randomly flips the velocity of the particles with a certain rate $lambda$. It is shown that as long as $lambda$ is non-zero, the rectification remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. This is illustrated in a classical harmonic chain subject to a quartic pinning potential (the $Phi^4$ model) and coupled to heat baths by Langevin equations.
In the easy-plane regime of XXZ spin chains, spin transport is ballistic, with a Drude weight that has a discontinuous fractal dependence on the value of the anisotropy $Delta = cos pi lambda$ at nonzero temperatures. We show that this structure nece ssarily implies the divergence of the low-frequency conductivity for generic irrational values of $lambda$. Within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics, we show that in the high-temperature limit the low-frequency conductivity at a generic anisotropy scales as $sigma(omega) sim 1/sqrt{omega}$; anomalous response occurs because quasiparticles undergo Levy flights. For rational values of $lambda$, the divergence is cut off at low frequencies and the corrections to ballistic spin transport are diffusive. We also use our approach to recover that at the isotropic point $Delta=1$, spin transport is superdiffusive with $sigma(omega) sim omega^{-1/3}$. We support our results with extensive numerical studies using matrix-product operator methods.
Few-magnon excitations in Heisenberg-like models play an important role in understanding magnetism and have long been studied by various approaches. However, the quantum dynamics of magnon excitations in a finite-size spin-$S$ $XXZ$ chain with single -ion anisotropy remains unsolved. Here, we exactly solve the two-magnon (three-magnon) problem in the spin-$S$ $XXZ$ chain by reducing the few-magnons to a fictitious single particle on a one-dimensional (two-dimensional) effective lattice. Such a mapping allows us to obtain both the static and dynamical properties of the model explicitly. The zero-energy-excitation states and various types of multimagnon bound states are manifested, with the latter being interpreted as edge states on the effective lattices. Moreover, we study the real-time multimagnon dynamics by simulating single-particle quantum walks on the effective lattices.
