The Monte Carlo carbyne model is modified to investigate the glass transition of the semi-flexible entangled polymer chains. The stochastic bombardment between monomers are monitored by Metropolis algorithm with help of the consideration of hard potential while the mobility of monomers is governed by its mass, scattering rate and temperature. Our model is capable to show that the glass transition temperature reduces with decreasing film thickness and the formation of critical voids in the thinner polymer contributing to the glass transition that is much easier than the bulk polymer.

We present a computer simulation of entangled polymer solutions at equilibrium. The chains repel each other via a soft Gaussian potential, appropriate for semi-dilute solutions at the scale of a correlation blob. The key innovation to suppress chain crossings is to use a pseudo-continuous model of a backbone which effectively leaves no gaps between consecutive points on the chain, unlike the usual bead-and-spring model. Our algorithm is sufficiently fast to observe the entangled regime using a standard desktop computer. The simulated structural and mechanical correlations are in fair agreement with the expected predictions for a semi-dilute solution of entangled chains.

By means of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations of a coarse-grained model for flexible polymers, we investigate how the integrated autocorrelation times of different energetic and structural quantities depend on the temperature. We show that, due to c ritical slowing down, an extremal autocorrelation time can also be considered as an indicator for the collapse transition that helps to locate the transition point. This is particularly useful for finite systems, where response quantities such as the specific heat do not necessarily exhibit clear indications for pronounced thermal activity.
An analytical model of mechanical stress in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) of a hydrogen/air fuel cell with porous Water Transfer Plates (WTP) is developed in this work. The model considers a mechanical stress in the membrane is a result of the cell load cycling under constant oxygen utilization. The load cycling causes the cycling of the inlet gas flow rate, which results in the membrane hydration/dehydration close to the gas inlet. Hydration/dehydration of the membrane leads to membrane swelling/shrinking, which causes mechanical stress in the constrained membrane. Mechanical stress results in through-plane crack formation. Thereby, the mechanical stress in the membrane causes mechanical failure of the membrane, limiting fuel cell lifetime. The model predicts the stress in the membrane as a function of the cell geometry, membrane material properties and operation conditions. The model was applied for stress calculation in GORE-SELECT.
We study the statistical mechanics of double-stranded semi-flexible polymers using both analytical techniques and simulation. We find a transition at some finite temperature, from a type of short range order to a fundamentally different sort of short range order. In the high temperature regime, the 2-point correlation functions of the object are identical to worm-like chains, while in the low temperature regime they are different due to a twist structure. In the low temperature phase, the polymers develop a kink-rod structure which could clarify some recent puzzling experiments on actin.
We present a unified scaling description for the dynamics of monomers of a semiflexible chain under good solvent condition in the free draining limit. We consider both the cases where the contour length $L$ is comparable to the persistence length $el l_p$ and the case $Lgg ell_p$. Our theory captures the early time monomer dynamics of a stiff chain characterized by $t^{3/4}$ dependence for the mean square displacement(MSD) of the monomers, but predicts a first crossover to the Rouse regime of $t^{2 u/{1+2 u}}$ for $tau_1 sim ell_p^3$, and a second crossover to the purely diffusive dynamics for the entire chain at $tau_2 sim L^{5/2}$. We confirm the predictions of this scaling description by studying monomer dynamics of dilute solution of semi-flexible chains under good solvent conditions obtained from our Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation studies for a large choice of chain lengths with number of monomers per chain N = 16 - 2048 and persistence length $ell_p = 1 - 500$ Lennard-Jones (LJ) units. These BD simulation results further confirm the absence of Gaussian regime for a 2d swollen chain from the slope of the plot of $langle R_N^2 rangle/2L ell_p sim L/ell_p$ which around $L/ell_p sim 1$ changes suddenly from $left(L/ell_p right) rightarrow left(L/ell_p right)^{0.5} $, also manifested in the power law decay for the bond autocorrelation function disproving the validity of the WLC in 2d. We further observe that the normalized transverse fluctuations of the semiflexible chains for different stiffness $sqrt{langle l_{bot}^2rangle}/L$ as a function of renormalized contour length $L/ell_p$ collapse on the same master plot and exhibits power law scaling $sqrt{langle l_{bot}^2rangle}/L sim (L/ell_p)^eta $ at extreme limits, where $eta = 0.5$ for extremely stiff chains ($L/ell_p gg 1$), and $eta = -0.25$ for fully flexible chains.
