Atomically engineered oxide heterostructures provide a fertile ground for creating novel states. For example, a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between two oxide insulators, giant thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient, emergent ferromagnetism from otherwise nonmagnetic components, and colossal ionic conductivity. Extensive research efforts reveal that oxygen deficiency or lattice strain play an important role in determining these unexpected properties. Herein, by studying the abrupt presence of robust ferromagnetism (up to 1.5 uB/Mn) in LaMnO3-based heterostructures, we find the multivalence states of Mn that play a decisive role in the emergence of ferromagnetism in the otherwise antiferromagnetic LaMnO3 thin films. Combining spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism techniques, we determine unambiguously that the ferromagnetism results from a conventional Mn3+-O-Mn4+ double-exchange mechanism rather than an interfacial effect. In contrast, the magnetic dead layer of 5 unit cell in proximity to the interface is found to be accompanied with the accumulation of Mn2+ induced by electronic reconstruction. These findings provide a hitherto-unexplored multivalence state of Mn on the emergent magnetism in undoped manganite epitaxial thin films, such as LaMnO3 and BiMnO3, and shed new light on all-oxide spintronic devices.

Emergent phenomena at polar-nonpolar oxide interfaces have been studied intensely in pursuit of next-generation oxide electronics and spintronics. Here we report the disentanglement of critical thicknesses for electron reconstruction and the emergenc e of ferromagnetism in polar-mismatched LaMnO3/SrTiO3 (001) heterostructures. Using a combination of element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy and dichroism, and first-principles calculations, interfacial electron accumulation and ferromagnetism have been observed within the polar, antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnO3. Our results show that the critical thickness for the onset of electron accumulation is as thin as 2 unit cells (UC), significantly thinner than the observed critical thickness for ferromagnetism of 5 UC. The absence of ferromagnetism below 5 UC is likely induced by electron over-accumulation. In turn, by controlling the doping of the LaMnO3, we are able to neutralize the excessive electrons from the polar mismatch in ultrathin LaMnO3 films and thus enable ferromagnetism in films as thin as 3 UC, extending the limits of our ability to synthesize and tailor emergent phenomena at interfaces and demonstrating manipulation of the electronic and magnetic structures of materials at the shortest length scales.
Quantum systems in confined geometries are host to novel physical phenomena. Examples include quantum Hall systems in semiconductors and Dirac electrons in graphene. Interest in such systems has also been intensified by the recent discovery of a larg e enhancement in photoluminescence quantum efficiency and a potential route to valleytronics in atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides, MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te), which are closely related to the indirect to direct bandgap transition in monolayers. Here, we report the first direct observation of the transition from indirect to direct bandgap in monolayer samples by using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-quality thin films of MoSe2 with variable thickness, grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The band structure measured experimentally indicates a stronger tendency of monolayer MoSe2 towards a direct bandgap, as well as a larger gap size, than theoretically predicted. Moreover, our finding of a significant spin-splitting of 180 meV at the valence band maximum of a monolayer MoSe2 film could expand its possible application to spintronic devices.
We report herein fabrication and characterization of a thin-film transistor (TFT) using single-crystalline, epitaxial SrTiO3 film, which was grown by a pulsed laser deposition technique followed by the thermal annealing treatment in an oxygen atmosph ere. Although TFTs on the polycrystalline epitaxial SrTiO3 films (as-deposited) exhibited poor transistor characteristics, the annealed single-crystalline SrTiO3 TFT exhibits transistor characteristics comparable with those of bulk single-crystal SrTiO3 FET: an on/off current ratio >10^5, sub-threshold swing ~2.1 V/decade, and field-effect mobility ~0.8 cm^2/Vs. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the appropriate thermal annealing treatment of epitaxial SrTiO3 films.
We studied magnetic-field induced microwave absorption in 100-200 nm thick La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate and found a low-field absorption with a very peculiar angular dependence: it appears only in the oblique field and is absent both in the parallel and in the perpendicular orientations. We demonstrate that this low-field absorption results from the ferromagnetic resonance in the multidomain state (domain-mode resonance). Its unusual angular dependence arises from the interplay between the parallel component of the magnetic field that drives the film into multidomain state and the perpendicular field component that controls the domain width through its effect on domain wall energy. The low-field microwave absorption in the multidomain state can be a tool to probe domain structure in magnetic films with in-plane magnetization.
We measured the magnetization depth profile of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x = 0.60pm0.04, y = 0.20pm0.03) film as a function of applied bending stress using polarized neutron reflectometry. From these measurements we obtained a coupling coefficient rela ting strain to the depth dependent magnetization. We found application of compressive (tensile) bending stress along the magnetic easy axis increases (decreases) the magnetization of the film.
