The coherent exchange of optical near fields between two neighboring dipoles plays an essential role for the optical properties, quantum dynamics and thus for the function of many naturally occurring and artificial nanosystems. These interactions are inherently short-ranged, extending over a few nanometers only, and depend sensitively on relative orientation, detuning and dephasing, i.e., on the vectorial properties of the coupled dipolar near fields. This makes it challenging to analyze them experimentally. Here, we introduce plasmonic nanofocusing spectroscopy to record coherent light scattering spectra with 5-nm spatial resolution from a small dipole antenna, excited solely by evanescent fields and coupled to plasmon resonances in a single gold nanorod. We resolve mode couplings, resonance energy shifts and Purcell effects as a function of dipole distance and relative orientation, and show how they arise from different vectorial components of the interacting optical near-fields. Our results pave the way for using dipolar alignment to control the optical properties and function of nanoscale systems.

An electrical pulse E(t) is completely defined by its time-dependent amplitude and polarisation direction. For optical pulses the manipulation and characterisation of the light polarisation state is fundamental due to its relevance in several scienti fic and technological fields. In this work we demonstrate the complete temporal reconstruction of the electric field of few-cycle pulses with a complex time-dependent polarisation. Our experimental approach is based on extreme ultraviolet interferometry with isolated attosecond pulses and on the demonstration that the motion of an attosecond electron wave packet is sensitive to perturbing fields only along the direction of its motion. By exploiting the sensitivity of interferometric techniques and by controlling the emission and acceleration direction of the wave packet, pulses with energies as low as few hundreds of nanojoules can be reconstructed. Our approach opens the possibility to completely characterise the electric field of the pulses typically used in visible pump-probe spectroscopy.
Polaritons, coupled excitations of photons and dipolar matter excitations, can propagate along anisotropic metasurfaces with either hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion. At the transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion (corresponding to a to pological transition), various intriguing phenomena are found, such as an enhancement of the photonic density of states, polariton canalization and hyperlensing. Here we investigate theoretically and experimentally the topological transition and the polaritonic coupling of deeply subwavelength elements in a uniaxial infrared-phononic metasurface, a grating of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoribbons. By hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging, we observe, for the first time, a synthetic transverse optical phonon resonance (that is, the strong collective near-field coupling of the nanoribbons) in the middle of the hBN Reststrahlen band, yielding a topological transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion. We further visualize and characterize the spatial evolution of a deeply subwavelength canalization mode near the transition frequency, which is a collimated polariton that is the basis for hyperlensing and diffraction-less propagation. Our results provide fundamental insights into the role of polaritonic near-field coupling in metasurfaces for creating topological transitions and polariton canalization.
A planar slab of negative index material works as a superlens with sub-diffraction-limited imaging resolution, since propagating waves are focused and, moreover, evanescent waves are reconstructed in the image plane. Here, we demonstrate a superlens for electric evanescent fields with low losses using perovskites in the mid-infrared regime. The combination of near-field microscopy with a tunable free-electron laser allows us to address precisely the polariton modes, which are critical for super-resolution imaging. We spectrally study the lateral and vertical distributions of evanescent waves around the image plane of such a lens, and achieve imaging resolution of wavelength/14 at the superlensing wavelength. Interestingly, at certain distances between the probe and sample surface, we observe a maximum of these evanescent fields. Comparisons with numerical simulations indicate that this maximum originates from an enhanced coupling between probe and object, which might be applicable for multifunctional circuits, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal sensors.

Nonlinear optical generation has been a well-established way to realize frequency conversion in nonlinear optics, whereas previous studies were just focusing on the scalar light fields. Here we report a concise yet efficient experiment to realize fre quency conversion from vector fields to vector fields based on the vectorial nonlinear optical process, e.g., the second-harmonic generation. Our scheme is based on two cascading type-I phase-matching BBO crystals, whose fast axes are configured elaborately to be perpendicular to each other. Without loss of generality, we take the full Poincare beams as the vectorial light fields in our experiment, and visualize the structured features of vectorial second-harmonic fields by using Stokes polarimetry. The interesting doubling effect of polarization topological index, i.e., a low-order full Poincare beam is converted to a high-order one are demonstrated. However, polarization singularities of both C-points and L-lines are found to keep invariant during the SHG process. Our scheme can be straightforwardly generalized to other nonlinear optical effects. Our scheme can offer a deeper understanding on the interaction of vectorial light with media and may find important applications in optical imaging, optical communication and quantum information science.
The analytical vectorial structure of non-paraxial four-petal Gaussian beams(FPGBs) in the far field has been studied based on vector angular spectrum method and stationary phase method. In terms of analytical electromagnetic representations of the T E and TM terms, the energy flux distributions of the TE term, the TM term, and the whole beam are derived in the far field, respectively. According to our investigation, the FPGBs can evolve into a number of small petals in the far field. The number of the petals is determined by the order of input beam. The physical pictures of the FPGBs are well illustrated from the vectorial structure, which is beneficial to strengthen the understanding of vectorial properties of the FPGBs.
